The Renormalization Group Evolution of the CKM Matrix
We compute the renormalization of the complete CKM matrix in the MSbar scheme
and perform a renormalization group analysis of the CKM parameters. The
calculation is simplified by studying only the Higgs sector, which for the
\beta-function of the CKM matrix is at one loop the same as in the full
Standard Model. The renormalization group flow including QCD corrections can be
computed analytically using the hierarchy of the CKM parameters and the large
mass differences between the quarks. While the evolution of the Cabibbo angle
is tiny V_{ub} and V_{cb} increase sizably. We compare our results with the
ones in the full Standard Model.Comment: Latex, 31 pages, extensions amsmath, epsfig required The complete

Renormalizing Heavy Quark Effective Theory at O(1/m_Q^3)
We present a calculation of the renormalized HQET Lagrangian at order
O(1/m_Q^3) in the one particle sector. The anomalous dimensions of local
operators and time ordered products of dimension 7 contributing at this order
are calculated in the one loop approximation. We show that a careful treatment
of the time ordered products is necessary to arrive at a gauge independent
renormalized lagrangian. Our result sets the stage for an investigation of
reparametrization invariance at O(1/m_Q^3).Comment: Latex, epsfig. Improved teXnology and modified conclusions. The

Radiatively corrected shape function for inclusive heavy hadron decays
We discuss the non-perturbative and the radiative corrections to inclusive B
decays from the point of view known from QED corrections to high energy e^+ e^-
processes. Here the leading contributions can be implemented through the so
called ``radiator function'' which corresponds to the shape function known in
heavy hadron decays. In this way some new insight into the origin of the shape
function is obtained. As a byproduct, a parameterization of the radiatively
corrected shape function is suggested which can be implemented in Monte Carlo
studies of inclusive heavy hadron decays.Comment: LaTeX, uses a4, graphicx and psfrag, 10 pages. The complete paper is

Spectator Effects in Heavy Quark Effective Theory at O(1/m_Q^3)
We complete the one loop renormalization of the HQET lagrangian at O(1/m_Q^3)
including four fermion operators with two heavy and two light quark fields in
the operator basis. It is shown that as a consequence the short distance
coefficients of the operators bilinear in the heavy quark field receive
nontrivial corrections.Comment: Latex, Latex-extension epsfig. The complete paper, including figures,

The HQET/NRQCD Lagrangian to order alpha/m^3
The HQET/NRQCD Lagrangian is computed to order alpha/m^3. The computation is
performed using dimensional regularization to regulate the ultraviolet and
infrared divergences. The results are consistent with reparametrization
invariance to order 1/m^3. Some subtleties in the matching conditions for NRQCD
are discussed.Comment: Two terms added to Lagrangian. Explicit value of G^3 coefficient

QCD-based description of one-particle inclusive B decays
We discuss one-particle inclusive B decays in the limit of heavy b and c
quarks. Using the large-N_C limit we factorize the non-leptonic matrix
elements, and we employ a short distance expansion. Modeling the remaining
nonperturbative matrix elements we obtain predictions for various decay
channels and compare them with existing data.Comment: LaTeX, 22 pages, 6 figures (eps); analytical and numerical results

Flavour Mixing, Gauge Invariance and Wave-function Renormalisation
We clarify some aspects of the LSZ formalism and wave function
renormalisation for unstable particles in the presence of electroweak
interactions when mixing and CP violation are considered. We also analyse the
renormalisation of the CKM mixing matrix which is closely related to wave
function renormalisation. We critically review earlier attempts to define a set
of "on-shell" wave function renormalisation constants. With the aid of an
extensive use of the Nielsen identities complemented by explicit calculations
we corroborate that the counter term for the CKM mixing matrix must be
explicitly gauge independent and demonstrate that the commonly used
prescription for the wave function renormalisation constants leads to gauge
parameter dependent amplitudes, even if the CKM counter term is gauge invariant
as required. We show that a proper LSZ-compliant prescription leads to gauge
independent amplitudes. The resulting wave function renormalisation constants
necessarily possess absorptive parts, but we verify that they comply with the
expected requirements concerning CP and CPT. The results obtained using this
prescription are different (even at the level of the modulus squared of the
amplitude) from the ones neglecting the absorptive parts in the case of top
decay. The difference is numerically relevant.Comment: 19 pages, plain latex, one ps figur
Scale dependence of the quark masses and mixings: leading order
We consider the Renormalization Group Equations (RGE) for the couplings of
the Standard Model and its extensions. Using the hierarchy of the quark masses
and of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix our argument is that a
consistent approximation for the RGE should be based on the parameter . We consider the RGE in the approximation where we
neglect all the relative terms of the order and higher.
Within this approximation we find the exact solution of the evolution equations
of the quark Yukawa couplings and of the vacuum expectation value of the Higgs
field. Then we derive the evolution of the observables: quark masses, CKM
matrix, Jarlskog invariant, Wolfenstein parameters of the CKM matrix and the
unitarity triangle. We show that the angles of the unitarity triangle remain
constant. This property may restrict the possibility of new symmetries or
textures at the grand unification scale.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, author of one reference adde
