    Aphidophagous Coccinellids in Alfalfa, Small Grains, and Maize in Eastern South Dakota

    In a 13-year study of aphidophagous coccinellids associated with alfalfa (Medicago sativa), maize (Zea mays), and small grain crops in eastern South Dakota, the following species were consistently associated with the crops: Hippodamia convergens, H. tredecimpunctata tibialis, H. parenthesis, Coleomegilla maculata lengi, Coccinella transversoguttata richardsoni, Cycloneda munda, and Adalia bipunctata. All species except A. bipunctata were associated with each of the three crops, while A. bipunctata occurred only in maize. Relative abundances of each species varied among crops and among years. Although only seven species were associated with the crops, additional species were captured on sticky traps stationed adjacent to sampled fields. The species diversity of immature coccinellids did not differ among crops but did differ among years. The diversity of adults differed among crops and years. The site from which samples were taken had no influence on the diversity of immatures or adults. Species relative abundances in alfalfa and small grains were more similar to each other than they were to relative abundances in maize

    Magnetic fields and spiral arms in the galaxy M51

    (Abridged) We use new multi-wavelength radio observations, made with the VLA and Effelsberg telescopes, to study the magnetic field of the nearby galaxy M51 on scales from 200\pc to several \kpc. Interferometric and single dish data are combined to obtain new maps at \wwav{3}{6} in total and polarized emission, and earlier \wav{20} data are re-reduced. We compare the spatial distribution of the radio emission with observations of the neutral gas, derive radio spectral index and Faraday depolarization maps, and model the large-scale variation in Faraday rotation in order to deduce the structure of the regular magnetic field. We find that the \wav{20} emission from the disc is severely depolarized and that a dominating fraction of the observed polarized emission at \wav{6} must be due to anisotropic small-scale magnetic fields. Taking this into account, we derive two components for the regular magnetic field in this galaxy: the disc is dominated by a combination of azimuthal modes, m=0+2m=0+2, but in the halo only an m=1m=1 mode is required to fit the observations. We disuss how the observed arm-interarm contrast in radio intensities can be reconciled with evidence for strong gas compression in the spiral shocks. The average arm--interam contrast, representative of the radii r>2\kpc where the spiral arms are broader, is not compatible with straightforward compression: lower arm--interarm contrasts than expected may be due to resolution effects and \emph{decompression} of the magnetic field as it leaves the arms. We suggest a simple method to estimate the turbulent scale in the magneto-ionic medium from the dependence of the standard deviation of the observed Faraday rotation measure on resolution.     Tsallis' q index and Mori's q phase transitions at edge of chaos

    We uncover the basis for the validity of the Tsallis statistics at the onset of chaos in logistic maps. The dynamics within the critical attractor is found to consist of an infinite family of Mori's qq-phase transitions of rapidly decreasing strength, each associated to a discontinuity in Feigenbaum's trajectory scaling function σ\sigma . The value of qq at each transition corresponds to the same special value for the entropic index qq, such that the resultant sets of qq-Lyapunov coefficients are equal to the Tsallis rates of entropy evolution.Comment: Significantly enlarged version, additional figures and references.     A Descriptive Study of the Population Dynamics of Adult \u3ci\u3eDiabrotica Virgifera Virgifera\u3c/i\u3e (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) in Artificially Infested Corn Fields

    The influence of corn plant phenology on the dynamics of adult western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera, populations was studied during 1988 and 1989 in com fields artificially infested with eggs. Fifty percent of adult emergence from the soil occurred by day 194 in 1988 and day 203 in 1989. In both years, adult emergence was synchronized with corn flowering, eggs were recovered in soil samples approximately four days after reproductive females were first observed in the population, and oviposition was essentially complete about 25 days after it began. The number of reproductive female beetle-days accumulating per m2 was similar in both years. Approximately two times as many eggs were laid in 1988 (1239 eggs 1m2) as in 1989 (590 eggs 1m2). The difference in egg density may have been caused by differences among years in the temporal synchrony of reproductive beetles with flowering corn. Daily survival rates of adults were high while corn was flowering; exhibited a gradual decline during grain filling; and decreased rapidly during the grain drying stage

    The population of deformed bands in 48^{48}Cr by emission of 8^{8}Be from the 32^{32}S + 24^{24}Mg reaction

    Using particle-γ\gamma coincidences we have studied the population of final states after the emission of 2 α\alpha-particles and of 8^{8}Be in nuclei formed in 32^{32}S+24^{24}Mg reactions at an energy of EL(32S)=130MeV\textrm{E}_{\rm L}(^{32}\textrm{S}) = 130 {\rm MeV}. The data were obtained in a setup consisting of the GASP γ\gamma-ray detection array and the multidetector array ISIS. Particle identification is obtained from the Δ\DeltaE and E signals of the ISIS silicon detector telescopes, the 8^{8}Be being identified by the instantaneous pile up of the Δ\DeltaE and E pulses. γ\gamma-ray decays of the 48^{48}Cr nucleus are identified with coincidences set on 2 α\alpha-particles and on 8^{8}Be. Some transitions of the side-band with Kπ=4K^\pi=4^{-} show stronger population for 8^{8}Be emission relative to that of 2 α\alpha-particles (by a factor 1.51.81.5-1.8). This observation is interpreted as due to an enhanced emission of 8^{8}Be into a more deformed nucleus. Calculations based on the extended Hauser-Feshbach compound decay formalism confirm this observation quantitatively.Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures accepted for publication in J. Phys.

    Dissecting the spiral galaxy M83: mid-infrared emission and comparison with other tracers of star formation

    We present a detailed mid-infrared study of the nearby, face-on spiral galaxy M83 based on ISOCAM data. M83 is a unique case study, since a wide variety of MIR broad-band filters as well as spectra, covering the wavelength range of 4 to 18\mu m, were observed and are presented here. Emission maxima trace the nuclear and bulge area, star-formation regions at the end of the bar, as well as the inner spiral arms. The fainter outer spiral arms and interarm regions are also evident in the MIR map. Spectral imaging of the central 3'x3' (4 kpc x 4 kpc) field allows us to investigate five regions of different environments. The various MIR components (very small grains, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules, ionic lines) are analyzed for different regions throughout the galaxy. In the total 4\mu m to 18\mu m wavelength range, the PAHs dominate the luminosity, contributing between 60% in the nuclear and bulge regions and 90% in the less active, interarm regions. Throughout the galaxy, the underlying continuum emission from the small grains is always a smaller contribution in the total MIR wavelength regime, peaking in the nuclear and bulge components. The implications of using broad-band filters only to characterize the mid-infrared emission of galaxies, a commonly used ISOCAM observation mode, are discussed. We present the first quantitative analysis of new H-alpha and 6cm VLA+Effelsberg radio continuum maps of M83. The distribution of the MIR emission is compared with that of the CO, HI, R band, H-alpha and 6cm radio. A striking correlation is found between the intensities in the two mid-infrared filter bands and the 6cm radio continuum. To explain the tight mid-infrared-radio correlation we propose the anchoring of magnetic field lines in the photoionized shells of gas clouds.Comment: 22 pages, 15 figures.     On the robustness of q-expectation values and Renyi entropy

    We study the robustness of functionals of probability distributions such as the R\'enyi and nonadditive S_q entropies, as well as the q-expectation values under small variations of the distributions. We focus on three important types of distribution functions, namely (i) continuous bounded (ii) discrete with finite number of states, and (iii) discrete with infinite number of states. The physical concept of robustness is contrasted with the mathematically stronger condition of stability and Lesche-stability for functionals. We explicitly demonstrate that, in the case of continuous distributions, once unbounded distributions and those leading to negative entropy are excluded, both Renyi and nonadditive S_q entropies as well as the q-expectation values are robust. For the discrete finite case, the Renyi and nonadditive S_q entropies and the q-expectation values are robust. For the infinite discrete case, where both Renyi entropy and q-expectations are known to violate Lesche-stability and stability respectively, we show that one can nevertheless state conditions which guarantee physical robustness.Comment: 6 pages, to appear in Euro Phys Let
