Field boundary habitats and their contribution to the area of semi-natural habitats on lowland farms in east Galway, western Ireland

Farmland biodiversity, cultural landscapes, soil functionality and climate stability are among the environmental public goods provided through agriculture.
Future Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) direct payments are intended to be more targeted at the provision of these agricultural deliverables. Field boundaries are an example of such deliverables.
They are widespread features that have both environmental and aesthetic functions in farmed landscapes. However, research on their variety, density and contribution to semi-natural habitat cover on farms in Ireland is lacking. This study investigates the diversity and density of all field
boundary habitat types on 32 lowland farms in east County Galway, western Ireland. A total of 286km of field boundaries were surveyed across six study sites. Five types of field boundary habitats were recorded. The density of field boundaries on the farms studied was high and could have
positive implications for delivery of environmental public goods and sustainable farming metrics. In more intensively farmed areas, field boundaries were the only remaining semi-natural habitat on
some farms highlighting the need to retain, and improve the ecological quality, of these features. The condition of one field boundary type (hedgerows) was also investigated in further detail. While
the density of field boundaries was high on many of the surveyed farms, we found that the
hedgerows on these farms were not necessarily in good condition for wildlife
Binary inspiral, gravitational radiation, and cosmology
Observations of binary inspiral in a single interferometric gravitational
wave detector can be cataloged according to signal-to-noise ratio and
chirp mass . The distribution of events in a catalog composed of
observations with greater than a threshold depends on the
Hubble expansion, deceleration parameter, and cosmological constant, as well as
the distribution of component masses in binary systems and evolutionary
effects. In this paper I find general expressions, valid in any homogeneous and
isotropic cosmological model, for the distribution with and of
cataloged events; I also evaluate these distributions explicitly for relevant
matter-dominated Friedmann-Robertson-Walker models and simple models of the
neutron star mass distribution. In matter dominated Friedmann-Robertson-Walker
cosmological models advanced LIGO detectors will observe binary neutron star
inspiral events with from distances not exceeding approximately
, corresponding to redshifts of (0.26) for
(), at an estimated rate of 1 per week. As the binary system mass
increases so does the distance it can be seen, up to a limit: in a matter
dominated Einstein-deSitter cosmological model with () that limit
is approximately (1.7) for binaries consisting of two
black holes. Cosmological tests based on catalogs of the
kind discussed here depend on the distribution of cataloged events with
and . The distributions found here will play a pivotal role in testing
cosmological models against our own universe and in constructing templates for

Gravitational Waves from coalescing binaries: Estimation of parameters
The paper presents a statistical model which reproduces the results of Monte
Carlo simulations to estimate the parameters of the gravitational wave signal
from a coalesing binary system. The model however is quite general and would be

The H-alpha Luminosity Function and Star Formation Rate Volume Density at z=0.8 from the NEWFIRM H-alpha Survey
[Abridged] We present new measurements of the H-alpha luminosity function
(LF) and SFR volume density for galaxies at z~0.8. Our analysis is based on
1.18m narrowband data from the NEWFIRM H-alpha Survey, a comprehensive
program designed to capture deep samples of intermediate redshift emission-line
galaxies using narrowband imaging in the near-infrared. The combination of
depth ( erg s cm in H-alpha at
3) and areal coverage (0.82 deg) complements other recent H-alpha
studies at similar redshifts, and enables us to minimize the impact of cosmic
variance and place robust constraints on the shape of the LF. The present
sample contains 818 NB118 excess objects, 394 of which are selected as H-alpha
emitters. Optical spectroscopy has been obtained for 62% of the NB118 excess
objects. Empirical optical broadband color classification is used to sort the
remainder of the sample. A comparison of the LFs constructed for the four
individual fields reveals significant cosmic variance, emphasizing that
multiple, widely separated observations are required. The dust-corrected LF is
well-described by a Schechter function with L*=10^{43.00\pm0.52} ergs s^{-1},
\phi*=10^{-3.20\pm0.54} Mpc^{-3}, and \alpha=-1.6\pm0.19. We compare our
H-alpha LF and SFR density to those at z<1, and find a rise in the SFR density
\propto(1+z)^{3.4}, which we attribute to significant L* evolution. Our H-alpha
SFR density of 10^{-1.00\pm0.18} M_sun yr^{-1} Mpc^{-3} is consistent with UV
and [O II] measurements at z~1. We discuss how these results compare to other
H-alpha surveys at z~0.8, and find that the different methods used to determine
survey completeness can lead to inconsistent results. This suggests that future
surveys probing fainter luminosities are needed, and more rigorous methods of

Topological Entropy of Braids on the Torus
A fast method is presented for computing the topological entropy of braids on
the torus. This work is motivated by the need to analyze large braids when
studying two-dimensional flows via the braiding of a large number of particle
trajectories. Our approach is a generalization of Moussafir's technique for
braids on the sphere. Previous methods for computing topological entropies
include the Bestvina--Handel train-track algorithm and matrix representations
of the braid group. However, the Bestvina--Handel algorithm quickly becomes
computationally intractable for large braid words, and matrix methods give only
lower bounds, which are often poor for large braids. Our method is
computationally fast and appears to give exponential convergence towards the
exact entropy. As an illustration we apply our approach to the braiding of both
periodic and aperiodic trajectories in the sine flow. The efficiency of the
method allows us to explore how much extra information about flow entropy is

Observational constraints on the neutron star mass distribution
Radio observations of neutron star binary pulsar systems have constrained
strongly the masses of eight neutron stars. Assuming neutron star masses are
uniformly distributed between lower and upper bounds and , the
observations determine with 95\% confidence that and . These limits give observational
support to neutron star formation scenarios that suggest that masses should
fall predominantly in the range , and will also be
important in the interpretation of binary inspiral observations by the Laser

The Origin of Black Hole Entropy in String Theory
I review some recent work in which the quantum states of string theory which
are associated with certain black holes have been identified and counted. For
large black holes, the number of states turns out to be precisely the
exponential of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. This provides a statistical
origin for black hole thermodynamics in the context of a potential quantum

Wetting and Minimal Surfaces
We study minimal surfaces which arise in wetting and capillarity phenomena.
Using conformal coordinates, we reduce the problem to a set of coupled boundary
equations for the contact line of the fluid surface, and then derive simple
diagrammatic rules to calculate the non-linear corrections to the Joanny-de
Gennes energy. We argue that perturbation theory is quasi-local, i.e. that all
geometric length scales of the fluid container decouple from the
short-wavelength deformations of the contact line. This is illustrated by a
calculation of the linearized interaction between contact lines on two opposite
parallel walls. We present a simple algorithm to compute the minimal surface
and its energy based on these ideas. We also point out the intriguing
singularities that arise in the Legendre transformation from the pure Dirichlet
to the mixed Dirichlet-Neumann problem.Comment: 22 page
Performance of Newtonian filters in detecting gravitational waves from coalescing binaries
Coalescing binary systems are one of the most promising sources of
gravitational waves. The technique of matched filtering used in the detection
of gravitational waves from coalescing binaries relies on the construction of
accurate templates. Until recently filters modelled on the quadrupole or the
Newtonian approximation were deemed sufficient. Recently it was shown that
post-Newtonian effects contribute to a secular growth in the phase difference
between the actual signal and its corresponding Newtonian template. In this
paper we investigate the possibility of compensating for the phase difference
caused by the post-Newtonian terms by allowing for a shift in the Newtonian
filter parameters. We find that Newtonian filters perform adequately for the
purpose of detecting the presence of the signal for both the initial and the
