Models for the integer quantum Hall effect: the network model, the Dirac equation, and a tight-binding Hamiltonian
We consider models for the plateau transition in the integer quantum Hall
effect. Starting from the network model, we construct a mapping to the Dirac
Hamiltonian in two dimensions. In the general case, the Dirac Hamiltonian has
randomness in the mass, the scalar potential, and the vector potential.
Separately, we show that the network model can also be associated with a
nearest neighbour, tight-binding Hamiltonian.Comment: Revtex, 15 pages, 7 figures; submitted to Phys. Rev.
Improved silicon nitride for advanced heat engines
The results of a four year program to improve the strength and reliability of injection-molded silicon nitride are summarized. Statistically designed processing experiments were performed to identify and optimize critical processing parameters and compositions. Process improvements were monitored by strength testing at room and elevated temperatures, and microstructural characterization by optical, scanning electron microscopes, and scanning transmission electron microscope. Processing modifications resulted in a 20 percent strength and 72 percent Weibull slope improvement of the baseline material. Additional sintering aids screening and optimization experiments succeeded in developing a new composition (GN-10) capable of 581.2 MPa at 1399 C. A SiC whisker toughened composite using this material as a matrix achieved a room temperature toughness of 6.9 MPa m(exp .5) by the Chevron notched bar technique. Exploratory experiments were conducted on injection molding of turbocharger rotors
Double Phase Transitions in Magnetized Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensation
It is investigated theoretically that magnetized Bose-Einstein condensation
(BEC) with the internal (spin) degrees of freedom exhibits a rich variety of
phase transitions, depending on the sign of the interaction in the spin
channel. In the antiferromagnetic interaction case there exist always double
BEC transitions from single component BEC to multiple component BEC. In the
ferromagnetic case BEC becomes always unstable at a lower temperature, leading
to a phase separation. The detailed phase diagram for the temperature vs the
polarization, the spatial spin structure, the distribution of non-condensates
and the excitation spectrum are examined for the harmonically trapped systems.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures. Submitted to J. Phys. Soc. Jp
Retrospective study of more than 9000 feline cutaneous tumours in the UK: 2006–2013
The aim of the study was to utilise a large database available from a UK-based, commercial veterinary diagnostic laboratory to ascertain the prevalence of different forms of cutaneous neoplasia within the feline population, and to detect any breed, sex or age predilections for the more common tumours
An Automated Social Graph De-anonymization Technique
We present a generic and automated approach to re-identifying nodes in
anonymized social networks which enables novel anonymization techniques to be
quickly evaluated. It uses machine learning (decision forests) to matching
pairs of nodes in disparate anonymized sub-graphs. The technique uncovers
artefacts and invariants of any black-box anonymization scheme from a small set
of examples. Despite a high degree of automation, classification succeeds with
significant true positive rates even when small false positive rates are
sought. Our evaluation uses publicly available real world datasets to study the
performance of our approach against real-world anonymization strategies, namely
the schemes used to protect datasets of The Data for Development (D4D)
Challenge. We show that the technique is effective even when only small numbers
of samples are used for training. Further, since it detects weaknesses in the
black-box anonymization scheme it can re-identify nodes in one social network
when trained on another.Comment: 12 page
Rapidly Rotating Fermi Gases
We show that the density profile of a Fermi gas in rapidly rotating potential
will develop prominent features reflecting the underlying Landau level like
energy spectrum. Depending on the aspect ratio of the trap, these features can
be a sequence of ellipsoidal volumes or a sequence of quantized steps.Comment: 4 pages, 1 postscript fil
Flexible parylene actuator for micro adaptive flow control
This paper describes the first flexible parylene electrostatic actuator valves intended for micro adaptive flow control for the future use on the wings of micro-air-vehicle (MAV). The actuator diaphragm is made of two layers of parylene membranes with offset vent holes. Without electrostatic actuation, air can move freely from one side of the skin to the other side through the vent holes. With actuation, these vent holes are sealed and the airflow is controlled. The membrane behaves as a complete diaphragm.
We have successfully demonstrated this function using a 2-mm x 2-mm parylene diaphragm electrostatic actuator valves. This work also includes the novel anti-stiction technology that is crucial to make such large-area parylene actuator diaphragm with the combined use of anti-stiction posts, self-assembled monolayers (SAM), surface roughening, and bromine trifluoride (BrFe) dry etching. With the help of SAM treatment, the operating voltage is lowered from 30 volts to 13 volts. The load deflection method is then used to measure the effective thickness of the composite
diaphragm. The flexible parylene diaphragm can be deflected up to 100 ÎĽm when 150 Torr of pressure is applied. The result is fitted into a theoretical model and yields an effective thickness of 5.9 ÎĽm, which is agreeable with the actual thickness of 5.6 ÎĽm, thus proves the functionality of the device
