Meta-Stable Brane Configurations by Adding an Orientifold-Plane to Giveon-Kutasov
In hep-th/0703135, they have found the type IIA intersecting brane
configuration where there exist three NS5-branes, D4-branes and anti-D4-branes.
By analyzing the gravitational interaction for the D4-branes in the background
of the NS5-branes, the phase structures in different regions of the parameter
space were studied in the context of classical string theory. In this paper, by
adding the orientifold 4-plane and 6-plane to the above brane configuration, we
describe the intersecting brane configurations of type IIA string theory
corresponding to the meta-stable nonsupersymmetric vacua of these gauge
theories.Comment: 21 pp, 6 figures; reduced bytes of figures, DBI action analysis added

Nanocrystalline and Thin Film Germanium Electrodes with High Lithium Capacity and High Rate Capabilities
Germanium nanocrystals (12 nm mean diam) and amorphous thin films (60-250 nm thick) were prepared as anodes for lithium secondary cells. Amorphous thin film electrodes prepared on planar nickel substrates showed stable capacities of 1700 mAh/g over 60 cycles. Germanium nanocrystals showed reversible gravimetric capacities of up to 1400 mAh/g with 60% capacity retention after 50 cycles. Both electrodes were found to be crystalline in the fully lithiated state. The enhanced capacity, rate capability (1000C), and cycle life of nanophase germanium over bulk crystalline germanium is attributed to the high surface area and short diffusion lengths of the active material and the absence of defects in nanophase materials
Spacelike boundaries from the c=1 Matrix Model
We find classical solutions of two dimensional noncritical string theory
which give rise to geometries with spacelike boundaries, similar to spacetimes
with cosmological event horizons. In the c=1 matrix model, these solutions have
a representation as simple time dependent configurations. We obtain the causal
structure of the resulting spacetimes. Using the macroscopic loop transform, we
probe the form of the tachyon condensate in the asymptotic regions.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures, v2: reference added, v3: minor correction
Highly Reversible Lithium Storage in Nanostructured Silicon
Anode materials of nanostructured silicon have been prepared by physical vapor deposition and characterized using electrochemical methods. The electrodes were prepared in thin-film form as nanocrystalline particles (12 nm mean diameter) and as continuous amorphous thin films (100 nm thick). The nanocrystalline silicon exhibited specific capacities of around 1100 mAh/g with a 50% capacity retention after 50 cycles. The amorphous thin-film electrodes exhibited initial capacities of 3500 mAh/g with a stable capacity of 2000 mAh/g over 50 cycles. We suggest that the nanoscale dimensions of the silicon circumvents conventional mechanisms of mechanical deterioration, permitting good cycle life
Geometrically Induced Phase Transitions at Large N
Utilizing the large N dual description of a metastable system of branes and
anti-branes wrapping rigid homologous S^2's in a non-compact Calabi-Yau
threefold, we study phase transitions induced by changing the positions of the
S^2's. At leading order in 1/N the effective potential for this system is
computed by the planar limit of an auxiliary matrix model. Beginning at the two
loop correction, the degenerate vacuum energy density of the discrete confining
vacua split, and a potential is generated for the axion. Changing the relative
positions of the S^2's causes discrete jumps in the energetically preferred
confining vacuum and can also obstruct direct brane/anti-brane annihilation
processes. The branes must hop to nearby S^2's before annihilating, thus
significantly increasing the lifetime of the corresponding non-supersymmetric
vacua. We also speculate that misaligned metastable glueball phases may
generate a repulsive inter-brane force which stabilizes the radial mode present
in compact Calabi-Yau threefolds.Comment: 47 pages, 7 figure
Supersymmetry Breaking Vacua from M Theory Fivebranes
We consider intersecting brane configurations realizing N=2 supersymmetric
gauge theories broken to N=1 by multitrace superpotentials, and softly to N=0.
We analyze, in the framework of M5-brane wrapping a curve, the supersymmetric
vacua and the analogs of spontaneous supersymmetry breaking and soft
supersymmetry breaking in gauge theories. We show that the M5-brane does not
exhibit the analog of metastable spontaneous supersymmetry breaking, and does
not have non-holomorphic minimal volume curves with holomorphic boundary
conditions. However, we find that any point in the N=2 moduli space can be
rotated to a non-holomorphic minimal volume curve, whose boundary conditions
break supersymmetry. We interpret these as the analogs of soft supersymmetry
breaking vacua in the gauge theory.Comment: 32 pages, 8 figures, harvmac; v2: corrections in eq. 3.6 and in

On the perturbative expansion of boundary reflection factors of the supersymmetric sinh-Gordon model
The supersymmetric sinh-Gordon model on a half-line with integrable boundary
conditions is considered perturbatively to verify conjectured exact reflection
factors to one loop order. Propagators for the boson and fermion fields
restricted to a half-line contain several novel features and are developed as
prerequisites for the calculations.Comment: 19 pages, 2 figure
The Operator Product Expansion of the Lowest Higher Spin Current at Finite N
For the N=2 Kazama-Suzuki(KS) model on CP^3, the lowest higher spin current
with spins (2, 5/2, 5/2,3) is obtained from the generalized GKO coset
construction. By computing the operator product expansion of this current and
itself, the next higher spin current with spins (3, 7/2, 7/2, 4) is also
derived. This is a realization of the N=2 W_{N+1} algebra with N=3 in the
supersymmetric WZW model. By incorporating the self-coupling constant of lowest
higher spin current which is known for the general (N,k), we present the
complete nonlinear operator product expansion of the lowest higher spin current
with spins (2, 5/2, 5/2, 3) in the N=2 KS model on CP^N space. This should
coincide with the asymptotic symmetry of the higher spin AdS_3 supergravity at
the quantum level. The large (N,k) 't Hooft limit and the corresponding
classical nonlinear algebra are also discussed.Comment: 62 pages; the footnotes added, some redundant appendices removed, the

More on Meta-Stable Brane Configuration
We describe the intersecting brane configuration of type IIA string theory
corresponding to the meta-stable nonsupersymmetric vacua in four dimensional
N=1 supersymmetric SU(N_c) gauge theory with an antisymmetric flavor, a
conjugate symmetric flavor, eight fundamental flavors, m_f fundamental flavors
and m_f antifundamental flavors. This is done by analyzing the N=1
supersymmetric SU(2m_f-N_c+4) magnetic gauge theory with dual matters and the
corresponding dual superpotential.Comment: 20 pp, 3 figures; Pages 11,12, and 14 improved; to appear in CQ
The Large N 't Hooft Limit of Kazama-Suzuki Model
We consider N=2 Kazama-Suzuki model on CP^N=SU(N+1)/SU(N)xU(1). It is known
that the N=2 current algebra for the supersymmetric WZW model, at level k, is a
nonlinear algebra. The N=2 W_3 algebra corresponding to N=2 was recovered from
the generalized GKO coset construction previously. For N=4, we construct one of
the higher spin currents, in N=2 W_5 algebra, with spins (2, 5/2, 5/2, 3). The
self-coupling constant in the operator product expansion of this current and
itself depends on N as well as k explicitly. We also observe a new higher spin
primary current of spins (3, 7/2, 7/2, 4). From the behaviors of N=2, 4 cases,
we expect the operator product expansion of the lowest higher spin current and
itself in N=2 W_{N+1} algebra. By taking the large (N, k) limit on the various
operator product expansions in components, we reproduce, at the linear order,
the corresponding operator product expansions in N=2 classical
W_{\infty}^{cl}[\lambda] algebra which is the asymptotic symmetry of the higher
spin AdS_3 supergravity found recently.Comment: 44 pages; the two typos in the first paragraph of page 23 corrected
