Interference Phenomena in Medium Induced Radiation
We consider the interference pattern for the medium-induced gluon radiation
produced by a color singlet quark-antiquark antenna embedded in a QCD medium
with size and `jet quenching' parameter . Within the BDMPS-Z
regime, we demonstrate that, for a dipole opening angle , the interference between the
medium--induced gluon emissions by the quark and the antiquark is suppressed
with respect to the direct emissions. This is so since direct emissions are
delocalized throughout the medium and thus yield contributions proportional to
while interference occurs only between emissions at early times, when both
sources remain coherent. Thus, for \tqq \gg\theta_c, the medium-induced
radiation is the sum of the two spectra individually produced by the quark and
the antiquark, without coherence effects like angular ordering. For \tqq
\ll\theta_c, the medium--induced radiation vanishes.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures; Proceedings of the "Quark Matter 2011" conferenc
Jet quenching via jet collimation
The strong modifications of dijet properties in heavy ion collisions measured
by ATLAS and CMS provide important constraints on the dynamical mechanisms
underlying jet quenching. In this work, we show that the transport of soft
gluons away from the jet cone - jet collimation - can account for the observed
dijet asymmetry with values of that lie in the expected order of
magnitude. Further, we show that the energy loss attained through this
mechanism results in a very mild distortion of the azimuthal angle dijet
distribution.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures; Proceedings of the "Quark Matter 2011" conferenc
Evershed clouds as precursors of moving magnetic features around sunspots
The relation between the Evershed flow and moving magnetic features (MMFs) is
studied using high-cadence, simultaneous spectropolarimetric measurements of a
sunspot in visible (630.2 nm) and near-infrared (1565 nm) lines. Doppler
velocities, magnetograms, and total linear polarization maps are calculated
from the observed Stokes profiles. We follow the temporal evolution of two
Evershed clouds that move radially outward along the same penumbral filament.
Eventually, the clouds cross the visible border of the spot and enter the moat
region, where they become MMFs. The flux patch farther from the sunspot has the
same polarity of the spot, while the MMF closer to it has opposite polarity and
exhibits abnormal circular polarization profiles. Our results provide strong
evidence that at least some MMFs are the continuation of the penumbral Evershed
flow into the moat. This, in turn, suggests that MMFs are magnetically
connected to sunspots.Comment: To appear in ApJ Letters, Vol 649, 2006 September 20 issu
Analysis by RNA-seq of transcriptomic changes elicited by heat shock in Leishmania major
Besides their medical relevance, Leishmania is an adequate model for studying post-transcriptional mechanisms of gene expression. In this microorganism, mRNA degradation/stabilization mechanisms together with translational control and post-translational modifications of proteins are the major drivers of gene expression. Leishmania parasites develop as promastigotes in sandflies and as amastigotes in mammalians, and during host transmission, the parasite experiences a sudden temperature increase. Here, changes in the transcriptome of Leishmania major promastigotes after a moderate heat shock were analysed by RNA-seq. Several of the up-regulated transcripts code for heat shock proteins, other for proteins previously reported to be amastigote-specific and many for hypothetical proteins. Many of the transcripts experiencing a decrease in their steady-state levels code for transporters, proteins involved in RNA metabolism or translational factors. In addition, putative long noncoding RNAs were identified among the differentially expressed transcripts. Finally, temperature-dependent changes in the selection of the spliced leader addition sites were inferred from the RNA-seq data, and particular cases were further validated by RT-PCR and Northern blotting. This study provides new insights into the post-transcriptional mechanisms by which Leishmania modulate gene expressionThis work was supported by grants (to B.A. and J.M.R.) from Ministerio de EconomĂa, Industria y Competitividad, project number SAF2017-86965-R (co-funded with FEDER funds), and by the Network of Tropical Diseases Research RICET (RD16/0027/0008), co-funded with FEDER funds. Competition for Graphene: Graphynes with Direction-Dependent Dirac Cones
The existence of Dirac cones in the band structure of two-dimensional materials accompanied by unprecedented electronic properties is considered to be a unique feature of graphene related to its hexagonal symmetry. Here, we present other two-dimensional carbon materials, graphynes, that also possess Dirac cones according to first-principles electronic structure calculations. One of these materials, 6,6,12-graphyne, does not have hexagonal symmetry and features two self-doped nonequivalent distorted Dirac cones suggesting electronic properties even more amazing than that of graphene
Heavy quarks in a magnetic field
The motion of a heavy charged quark in a magnetic field is analyzed in the
vacuum of strongly coupled CFT. The motion of the quark is dissipative. It
moves in spiral until it eventually comes to rest. The world-sheet geometry is
locally AdS_2 but has a time dependent horizon. The string profile in the
static gauge extends from the boundary till a point where an embedding
singularity exists. Connections with other circular string motions are
established.Comment: (v3) Misprints corrected, discussion on moving horizons improved and

Mach Cones in Quark Gluon Plasma
The experimental azimuthal dihadron distributions at RHIC show a double peak
structure in the away side ( rad.) for intermediate
particles. A variety of models have appeared trying to describe this
modification. We will review most of them, with special emphasis in the Conical
Flow scenario in which the observed shape is a consequence of the emission of
sound by a supersonic high momentum particle propagating in the Quark Gluon
Plasma.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, Invited plenary talk given at the 19th

Temporal evolution of the Evershed flow in sunspots. I. Observational characterization of Evershed clouds
[Abridged] The magnetic and kinematic properties of the photospheric Evershed
flow are relatively well known, but we are still far from a complete
understanding of its nature. The evolution of the flow with time, which is
mainly due to appearance of velocity packets called Evershed clouds (ECs), may
provide information to further constrain its origin. Here we undertake a
detailed analysis of the evolution of the Evershed flow by studying the
properties of ECs. In this first paper we determine the sizes, proper motions,
location in the penumbra, and frequency of appearance of ECs, as well as their
typical Doppler velocities, linear and circular polarization signals, Stokes V
area asymmetries, and continuum intensities. High-cadence, high-resolution,
full vector spectropolarimetric measurements in visible and infrared lines are
used to derive these parameters. We find that ECs appear in the mid penumbra
and propage outward along filaments with large linear polarization signals and
enhanced Evershed flows. The frequency of appearance of ECs varies between 15
and 40 minutes in different filaments. ECs exhibit the largest Doppler
velocities and linear-to-circular polarization ratios of the whole penumbra. In
addition, lines formed deeper in the atmosphere show larger Doppler velocities,
much in the same way as the ''quiescent'' Evershed flow. According to our
observations, ECs can be classified in two groups: type I ECs, which vanish in
the outer penumbra, and type II ECs, which cross the outer penumbral boundary
and enter the sunspot moat. Most of the observed ECs belong to type I. On
average, type II ECs can be detected as velocity structures outside of the spot
for only about 14 min. Their proper motions in the moat are significantly
reduced with respect to the ones they had in the penumbra.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&
Dissipation from a heavy quark moving through N=4 super-Yang-Mills plasma
Using AdS/CFT, we compute the Fourier space profile of generated by
a heavy quark moving through a thermal plasma of strongly coupled N=4
super-Yang-Mills theory. We find evidence of a wake whose description includes
gauge fields with large momenta. We comment on the possible relevance of our
results to relativistic heavy ion collisions.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figures. v2: reference added, other minor improvements.
