Vibration of skewed cantilever plates and helicoidal shells
Theoretical vibration frequencies and mode shapes are obtained for skewed plates and helicoidal shells with a cantilever boundary. Using Hamilton's law of varying action, a power series solution is developed to obtain converged numerical results for the five lowest frequencies. Effects of geometrical variables such as aspect ratio, sweep angle and shell radius to thickness ratio are investigated. Accuracy of the solution method is substantiated by comparison with existing skewed plate spherical cap, and conical shell results
Revised reference model for nitric acid
A nearly global set of data on the nitric acid distribution was obtained for seven months by the Limb Infrared Monitor of the Stratosphere (LIMS) experiment on the Nimbus 7 spacecraft. The evaluation of the accuracy, precision, and resolution of these data is described, and a description of the major features of the nitric acid distributions is presented. The zonal mean for nitric acid is distributed in a stratospheric layer that peaks near 30 mb, with the largest mixing ratios occurring in polar regions, especially in winter
Finite-element-analysis model and preliminary ground testing of controls-structures interaction evolutionary model reflector
Results of two different nonlinear finite element analyses and preliminary test results for the final design of the Controls-Structures Interaction Evolutionary Model are presented. Load-deflection data bases are generalized from analysis and testing of the 16-foot diameter, dish shaped reflector. Natural frequencies and mode shapes are obtained from vibrational analysis. Experimental and analytical results show similar trends; however, future test hardware modifications and finite element model refinement would be necessary to obtain better correlation. The two nonlinear analysis procedures are both adequate techniques for the analysis of prestressed structures with complex geometries
Exponential distributions of collective flow-event properties in viscous liquid dynamics
We study the statistics of flow events in the inherent dynamics in
supercooled two- and three-dimensional binary Lennard-Jones liquids.
Distributions of changes of the collective quantities energy, pressure and
shear stress become exponential at low temperatures, as does that of the event
"size" . We show how the -distribution controls the
others, while itself following from exponential tails in the distributions of
(1) single particle displacements , involving a Lindemann-like length
and (2) the number of active particles (with ).Comment: Accepter version (PRL
Crystallization of the Wahnstr\"om Binary Lennard-Jones Liquid
We report observation of crystallization of the glass-forming binary
Lennard-Jones liquid first used by Wahnstr\"om [G. Wahnstr\"om, Phys. Rev. A
44, 3752 (1991)]. Molecular dynamics simulations of the metastable liquid on a
timescale of microseconds were performed. The liquid crystallized
spontaneously. The crystal structure was identified as MgZn_2. Formation of
transient crystallites is observed in the liquid. The crystallization is
investigate at different temperatures and compositions. At high temperature the
rate of crystallite formation is the limiting factor, while at low temperature
the limiting factor is growth rate. The melting temperature of the crystal is
estimated to be T_m=0.93 at rho=0.82. The maximum crystallization rate of the
A_2B composition is T=0.60+/-0.02.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures; corrected typo

Strong pressure-energy correlations in liquids as a configuration space property: Simulations of temperature down jumps and crystallization
Computer simulations recently revealed that several liquids exhibit strong
correlations between virial and potential energy equilibrium fluctuations in
the NVT ensemble [U. R. Pedersen {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 100},
015701 (2008)]. In order to investigate whether these correlations are present
also far from equilibrium constant-volume aging following a temperature down
jump from equilibrium was simulated for two strongly correlating liquids, an
asymmetric dumbbell model and Lewis-Wahnstr{\"o}m OTP, as well as for SPC water
that is not strongly correlating. For the two strongly correlating liquids
virial and potential energy follow each other closely during the aging towards
equilibrium. For SPC water, on the other hand, virial and potential energy vary
with little correlation as the system ages towards equilibrium. Further proof
that strong pressure-energy correlations express a configuration space property
comes from monitoring pressure and energy during the crystallization (reported
here for the first time) of supercooled Lewis-Wahnstr{\"o}m OTP at constant
temperature
Controls-structures-electromagnetics interaction program
A technology development program is described involving Controls Structures Electromagnetics Interaction (CSEI) for large space structures. The CSEI program was developed as part of the continuing effort following the successful kinematic deployment and RF tests of the 15 meter Hoop/Column antenna. One lesson learned was the importance of making reflector surface adjustment after fabrication and deployment. Given are program objectives, ground based test configuration, Intelsat adaptive feed, reflector shape prediction model, control experiment concepts, master schedule, and Control Of Flexible Structures-II (COFS-II) baseline configuration
Principal Component Analysis with Noisy and/or Missing Data
We present a method for performing Principal Component Analysis (PCA) on
noisy datasets with missing values. Estimates of the measurement error are used
to weight the input data such that compared to classic PCA, the resulting
eigenvectors are more sensitive to the true underlying signal variations rather
than being pulled by heteroskedastic measurement noise. Missing data is simply
the limiting case of weight=0. The underlying algorithm is a noise weighted
Expectation Maximization (EM) PCA, which has additional benefits of
implementation speed and flexibility for smoothing eigenvectors to reduce the
noise contribution. We present applications of this method on simulated data
and QSO spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey.Comment: Accepted for publication in PASP; v2 with minor updates, mostly to

High temperature static strain gage development contract, tasks 1 and 2
Results are presented for the first two tasks to develop resistive strain gage systems for use up to 1250 K on blades and vanes in gas turbine engines under tests. The objective of these two tasks was to further improve and evaluate two static strain gage alloys identified as candidates in a previous program. Improved compositions were not found for either alloy. Further efforts on the Fe-11.9Al-10.6Cr weigth percent alloy were discontinued because of time dependent drift problems at 1250 K in air. When produced as a 6.5 micrometer thick sputtered film, the Pd-13Cr weight percent alloys is not sufficiently stable for this use in air at 1250 K and a protective overcoat system will need to be developed
