Numeric simulation of atom probe tomography
Die Arbeit beschreibt einen neuen Ansatz zur Simulation von Messdaten, wie sie bei Experimenten mit der Atomsondentomographie erzeugt werden. Derartige Simulationen stellen einen komplementären Ansatz dar, mit dessen Hilfe die Interpretation von Messergebnissen verbessert werden soll. Die atomare Struktur der zu untersuchenden Probe wird maßstabsgerecht durch Wigner-Seitz-Zellen beschrieben. Aus der Berechnung der Trajektorien feldemittierter Ionen ergeben sich zweidimensionale Detektorkoordinaten. Eine Analyse der Trajektorien zeigt vergleichbare Abbildungseigenschaften, wie sie auch mit anderen Simulationsverfahren und in Experimenten ermittelt wurden. Die Flexibilität in der Beschreibung der Probenstruktur beim hier verwendeten Ansatz zeigt sich insbesondere darin, dass realistische Felddesorptionsbilder für beliebige Gitterstrukturen und -orientierungen berechnet werden können (z.B. kubisch, hexagonal, amorphe Strukturen, Korngrenzen)
Rapid Production of Accurate Embedded-Atom Method Potentials for Metal Alloys
A critical limitation to the wide-scale use of classical molecular dynamics
for alloy design is the limited availability of suitable interatomic
potentials. Here, we introduce the Rapid Alloy Method for Producing Accurate
General Empirical Potentials or RAMPAGE, a computationally economical procedure
to generate binary embedded-atom model potentials from already-existing
single-element potentials that can be further combined into multi-component
alloy potentials. We present the quality of RAMPAGE calibrated Finnis-Sinclair
type EAM potentials using binary Ag-Al and ternary Ag-Au-Cu as case studies. We
demonstrate that RAMPAGE potentials can reproduce bulk properties and forces
with greater accuracy than that of other alloy potentials. In some simulations,
it is observed the quality of the optimized cross interactions can exceed that
of the original off-the-shelf elemental potential inputs
Small-Scale Rack Testing of Wood-Frame Shear Walls
A series of racking tests were performed with small-scale (1.2-m X 1.2-m) plywood and OSB assemblies as a means of assessing the potential of reduced assembly sizes in screening variables for subsequent full-size tests. The plywood materials and configurations included variations in stud spacing, nailing, panel thickness and number, and addition of gypsum board. OSB assemblies differed in panel orientation and nailing. The framing used was KD Select Structural to minimize variations in fastening. Both of the standard assemblies (400-mm stud spacing) were also exposed to high relative humidity and effects of green framing. There were clear statistical differences between most plywood configurations, but the most prominent were for center-stud framing, and 9-mm-thick panels. The addition of gypsum board gave higher maximum load and greater stiffness, but the increased variability precluded finding significant differences with the basecase. OSB was significantly lower than plywood in most results. Moisture effects were minimal except for a greater deformation of OSB to the maximum load. The effect of green framing for the bottom plate was minimal
Mechanical Strength of 17 134 Model Proteins and Cysteine Slipknots
A new theoretical survey of proteins' resistance to constant speed stretching
is performed for a set of 17 134 proteins as described by a structure-based
model. The proteins selected have no gaps in their structure determination and
consist of no more than 250 amino acids. Our previous studies have dealt with
7510 proteins of no more than 150 amino acids. The proteins are ranked
according to the strength of the resistance. Most of the predicted top-strength
proteins have not yet been studied experimentally. Architectures and folds
which are likely to yield large forces are identified. New types of potent
force clamps are discovered. They involve disulphide bridges and, in
particular, cysteine slipknots. An effective energy parameter of the model is
estimated by comparing the theoretical data on characteristic forces to the
corresponding experimental values combined with an extrapolation of the
theoretical data to the experimental pulling speeds. These studies provide
guidance for future experiments on single molecule manipulation and should lead
to selection of proteins for applications. A new class of proteins, involving
cystein slipknots, is identified as one that is expected to lead to the
strongest force clamps known. This class is characterized through molecular

Factors Associated with HIV/AIDS Diagnostic Disclosure to HIV Infected Children Receiving HAART: A Multi-Center Study in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
BACKGROUND: Diagnostic disclosure of HIV/AIDS to a child is becoming an increasingly common issue in clinical practice. Nevertheless, some parents and health care professionals are reluctant to inform children about their HIV infection status. The objective of this study was to identify the proportion of children who have knowledge of their serostatus and factors associated with disclosure in HIV-infected children receiving HAART in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in five hospitals in Addis Ababa from February 18, 2008-April 28, 2008. The study populations were parents/caretakers and children living with HIV/AIDS who were receiving Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART) in selected hospitals in Addis Ababa. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis were carried out using SPSS 12.0.1 statistical software. RESULTS: A total of 390 children/caretaker pairs were included in the study. Two hundred forty three children (62.3%) were between 6-9 years of age. HIV/AIDS status was known by 68 (17.4%) children, 93 (29%) caretakers reported knowing the child's serostatus two years prior to our survey, 180 (46.2%) respondents said that the child should be told about his/her HIV/AIDS status when he/she is older than 14 years of age. Children less than 9 years of age and those living with educated caregivers are less likely to know their results than their counterparts. Children referred from hospital's in-patient ward before attending the HIV clinic and private clinic were more likely to know their results than those from community clinic. CONCLUSION: The proportion of disclosure of HIV/AIDS diagnosis to HIV-infected children is low. Strengthening referral linkage and health education tailored to educated caregivers are recommended to increase the rate of disclosure
Floristic analysis of a high-speed railway embankment in a Mediterranean landscape
We analyzed the floristic composition of a 4.5 km-long segment of a high-speed railway in Lazio, central Italy, which travels on an artificial embankment through an intensively-farmed landscape. In total, 287 vascular plant species were recorded. The life-form distribution was found to be similar to that of the regional species pool, with high percentages of therophytes (38%) and phanerophytes (13%). In the chorological spectrum the Mediterranean floristic element prevailed (44%), while alien species were 8% of the flora. The phytosociological spectrum showed a high diversity of characteristic species from the class Stellarietea mediae or its subordinate syntaxa (26%), and in particular from the order Thero-Brometalia (Mediterranean, sub-nitrophilous annual communities). Species from forest syntaxa had a relatively high diversity (9%). These results suggest that the ecological filtering provided by the Mediterranean regional climate controlled species assemblage even in a completely artificial habitat, preventing floristic homogenization: the flora of the studied railway section is only partially »ruderalized«, while it keeps strong links with the regional (semi-) natural plant communities. However, in contrast to what is observed in central and north Europe, the railway sides studied in the present paper do not seem to represent a refugial habitat for rare species from grassland communities, mainly because in Italy semi-natural dry grasslands are still widely represented
HIV Status Disclosure and Retention in Care in HIV-Infected Adolescents on Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) in West Africa
We assessed the effect of HIV status disclosure on retention in care from initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) among HIV-infected children aged 10 years or more in Cote d'Ivoire, Mali and Sénégal.Multi-centre cohort study within five paediatric clinics participating in the IeDEA West Africa collaboration. HIV-infected patients were included in this study if they met the following inclusion criteria: aged 10-21 years while on ART; having initiated ART ≥ 200 days before the closure date of the clinic database; followed ≥ 15 days from ART initiation in clinics with ≥ 10 adolescents enrolled. Routine follow-up data were merged with those collected through a standardized ad hoc questionnaire on awareness of HIV status. Probability of retention (no death or loss-to-follow-up) was estimated with Kaplan-Meier method. Cox proportional hazard model with date of ART initiation as origin and a delayed entry at date of 10th birthday was used to identify factors associated with death or loss-to-follow-up.650 adolescents were available for this analysis. Characteristics at ART initiation were: median age of 10.4 years; median CD4 count of 224 cells/mm³ (47% with severe immunosuppression), 48% CDC stage C/WHO stage 3/4. The median follow-up on ART after the age of 10 was 23.3 months; 187 adolescents (28.8%) knew their HIV status. The overall probability of retention at 36 months after ART initiation was 74.6% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 70.5-79.0) and was higher for those disclosed compared to those not: adjusted hazard ratio for the risk of being death or loss-to-follow-up = 0.23 (95% CI: 0.13-0.39).About 2/3 of HIV-infected adolescents on ART were not aware of their HIV status in these ART clinics in West Africa but disclosed HIV status improved retention in care. The disclosure process should be thus systematically encouraged and organized in adolescent populations
Tide-induced recirculation across the aquifer-ocean interface
A parametric analysis is conducted to examine the influence of tides, inland hydraulic conditions, and aquifer properties on the rate of tide-induced seawater recirculation through the nearshore aquifer. Understanding such influence is crucial for accurate prediction of subsurface chemical fluxes to coastal waters via groundwater discharge. The analysis is based on numerical simulations of density-dependent groundwater flow in a coastal aquifer subject to tidal oscillations across a sloping beach face. The results reveal that the amplitude of tidal oscillations and the inland hydraulic gradient are the primary parameters controlling the tide-induced recirculation rates. Significant tidal exchange is expected when the ratio of tidal to inland forcing is large. The horizontal tidal shoreline excursion and aquifer depth both display asymptotic behavior, influencing recirculation rates for only small values where the exchange process is limited by the potential for infiltration and shallowness of the aquifer, respectively. The analysis also indicates that tidal effects increase density-driven recirculation rates due to enhanced convective flow within the saltwater wedge
Experimental Infection of Mice with Avian Paramyxovirus Serotypes 1 to 9
The nine serotypes of avian paramyxoviruses (APMVs) are frequently isolated from domestic and wild birds worldwide. APMV-1, also called Newcastle disease virus, was shown to be attenuated in non-avian species and is being developed as a potential vector for human vaccines. In the present study, we extended this evaluation to the other eight serotypes by evaluating infection in BALB/c mice. Mice were inoculated intranasally with a prototype strain of each of the nine serotypes and monitored for clinical disease, gross pathology, histopathology, virus replication and viral antigen distribution, and seroconversion. On the basis of multiple criteria, each of the APMV serotypes except serotype 5 was found to replicate in mice. Five of the serotypes produced clinical disease and significant weight loss in the following order of severity: 1, 2>6, 9>7. However, disease was short-lived. The other serotypes produced no evident clinical disease. Replication of all of the APMVs except APMV-5 in the nasal turbinates and lungs was confirmed by the recovery of infectious virus and by substantial expression of viral antigen in the epithelial lining detected by immunohistochemistry. Trace levels of infectious APMV-4 and -9 were detected in the brain of some animals; otherwise, no virus was detected in the brain, small intestine, kidney, or spleen. Histologically, infection with the APMVs resulted in lung lesions consistent with broncho-interstitial pneumonia of varying severity that were completely resolved at 14 days post infection. All of the mice infected with the APMVs except APMV-5 produced serotype-specific HI serum antibodies, confirming a lack of replication of APMV-5. Taken together, these results demonstrate that all APMV serotypes except APMV-5 are capable of replicating in mice with minimal disease and pathology
