    Sociocultural Risk Factors for Elevated Perceived Stress among African American Smokers

    Introduction: African Americans experience unique stressors that may inhibit smoking cessation and enhance relapse rates. Few studies, however, have focused on risk factors for perceived stress among treatment seekers. Because African Americans are less likely to quit compared to the larger community, understanding factors associated with perceived stress among smokers has the potential to improve intervention outcomes. This study examined psychosocial and cultural correlates of stress in a sample of African American participants in a randomized controlled trial. Methods: At baseline, participants reported demographic factors and completed assessments of smoking history, alcohol use, friend and household smoking, weight concerns, acculturation, depressive symptoms, and perceived stress (N = 325). Bivariate associations were examined, followed by multiple regression analyses to test independent relationships. The sample was comprised of mostly middle-aged males, with at least a high school education, who were single, and reported low household income. Participants were moderately nicotine dependent and smoked 18 cigarettes per day for 26 years. Results: Perceived stress was inversely associated with age (r = -.16, p = .004), education (r = -.11, p = .04), household income (r = -.11, p = .047), and positively associated with being male (r = .13, p = .02). Stress perceptions were positively related to cigarettes per day (r = .11, p = .049), nicotine dependence (r = .20, p = .001), drinking frequency (r = .15, p = .008), drinking intensity (r = .14, p=.02), and inversely related to smoking duration (r = -.12, p = .03). We found positive associations between perceived stress and household smokers (r = .18, p = .004), and friends who smoke (r = .15, p = .01). Perceived stress was also positively associated with post-cessation weight concern (r = .14, p = .01), a traditional African American cultural orientation; r = .12, p = .04), and depressive symptoms (r = .65, p Conclusion: These findings have important intervention implications. Many of the risk factors for distress among African American smokers are modifiable. Interventions should prioritize addressing depression, household smoking environment, and stress among younger smokers, in addition to managing other stress-enhancing concerns like alcohol use

    A stable isotope stratigraphy for the Axel Heiberg Fossil Forest and its application to Eocene climate

This study details carbon and hydrogen isotopic and biomarker analyses of samples of lignite (bulk fossil leaves), wood, paleosol, and resinite from the Middle to Late Eocene age fossil forest stratigraphy on Axel Heiberg Island, Nunavut, Canada. Bulk carbon isotopes show a record of frequent, large fluctuations on the scale of the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum benthic carbon excursion of [approx.] 2.6%â‚€ (Zachos 1999). However, terrestrial flora are less sensitive to COâ‚‚ fluctuations given their capacity to regulate stomatal intake and the comparatively easy diffusion of COâ‚‚ in air. Resinites (-22.8 +/- 1.7%â‚€) are enriched relative to bulk lignite (-24.7 +/- 0.75%â‚€), and wood (-21.66 +/- 0.45%â‚€) is also enriched relative to bulk lignite. Both 1) a scenario of periodic methane hydrate pulses and 2) a scenario of fluctuating forest stand LAI (leaf area index) are not inconsistent with our data. Either mechanism could be responsible for large carbon isotope shifts. Higher plant input dominated the n-alkane signature. Compound-specific hydrogen isotopes in n-alkanes show a record of marked secular change, with isotopes becoming generally lighter over the time span of the stratigraphy, though punctuated by singular fluctuations as large as 32%â‚€.(cont.) Polycyclic isoprenoid lipids (-266%â‚€ to -375%â‚€, mean 300%â‚€ +/- 38%â‚€) are characteristically depleted relative to n-alkanes (-238%â‚€ to -295%â‚€, mean -268%â‚€ +/- 10%â‚€). From the n-alkanes, we estimate that environmental water in the Eocene on Axel Heiberg Island was depleted -150%o +/- 24.8%o, which agrees with an estimate derived from cellulose, [delta]D-environmental = -133%â‚€ (Jahren 2003). (For comparison, modern precipitation at the site has a [delta]D value of [approx.] -213%â‚€, though precipitation should not be considered equivalent to environmental water.) This datum is consistent with a meridional weather patterns that may have carried moisture over continents towards high latitudes in the absence of a polar front, isotopically depleting precipitation to a greater extent than occurs today. However, seasonality cannot be discounted as a mechanism, given that colder temperatures would lead to colder condensation temperatures and thus, isotopically lighter precipitation.Monica C.     Young children do not integrate visual and haptic information

    Several studies have shown that adults integrate visual and haptic information (and information from other modalities) in a statistically optimal fashion, weighting each sense according to its reliability. To date no studies have investigated when this capacity for cross-modal integration develops. Here we show that prior to eight years of age, integration of visual and haptic spatial information is far from optimal, with either vision or touch dominating totally, even in conditions where the dominant sense is far less precise than the other (assessed by discrimination thresholds). For size discrimination, haptic information dominates in determining both perceived size and discrimination thresholds, while for orientation discrimination vision dominates. By eight-ten years, the integration becomes statistically optimal, like adults. We suggest that during development, perceptual systems require constant recalibration, for which cross-sensory comparison is important. Using one sense to calibrate the other precludes useful combination of the two sources
