A new species of Mayfly, Maccaffertium annae sp. n. (Ephemeroptera: Heptageniidae) from Mexican Amber (Miocene)

    Get PDF
Maccaffertium annae sp. n. is described in the Mexican amber of early Miocene age. It constitutes the first species of mayfly (Ephemeroptera), the first record of the family Heptageniidae to be described from this amber, and also the first fossil record of the genus Maccaffertium. The species is represented by male and female imagos in one piece of amber

Static Turning Analysis of Vehicles Subject to Externally Applied Forces - A Moment Arm Ratio Formulation

A formulation for representing the static turning response of a two-axle vehicle due to applied external or control forces is expressed in terms of a simple ratio of two distances along the vehicle longitudinal axis. The two distancescoincide with points on the vehicle at which externally applied / control forces and their reactive inertial forces act with respect to the vehicle neutral steer point. The resulting formulation is equivalent to the rotational equilibrium equation written with respect to the neutral steer point. The method allows a simple "visual analysis" of the steady turning process by showing how key forces and associated moment arms can change with respect to one another due to vehicle modifications or different operatingconditions, thereby affecting the static turning response of the vehicle.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/65020/1/MacAdam 1989 VSD Static Turning Analysis paper.pd

Application of an Optimal Preview Control for Simulation of Closed-Loop Automobile Driving

An optimal preview control method is applied to the automobile path following problem. The technique is first used to examine the straight-line regulatory driving task and results compared with similar experimental measurements. The method is further demonstrated by closed-loop-simulation of an automobile driver/vehicle system during transient lane-change maneuvers. The computer simulation results are compared with equivalent vehicle test measurements.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/65010/1/MacAdam 1981 IEEE driver model.pd

Understanding and Modeling the Human Driver

This paper examines the role of the human driver as the primary control element within the traditional driver-vehicle system. Lateral and longitudinal control tasks such as path-following, obstacle avoidance, and headway control are examples of steering and braking activities performed by the human driver. Physical limitations as well as various attributes that make the human driver unique and help to characterize human control behavior are described. Example driver models containing such traits and that are commonly used to predict the performance of the combined driver-vehicle system in lateral and longitudinal control tasks are identified.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/65021/1/MacAdam_2003 VSD Understanding and Modelling the Driver.pd

The Interaction of Management with Botanical Composition of Irrigated Grass-Legume Pasture Mixtures in the Intermountain West USA

    Get PDF
Beef produced on semi-arid range and milk produced in confinement are the main agricultural commodities in the semi-arid western USA. The studies reported here were undertaken to determine the suitability of irrigated pasture as an alternative to traditional beef and dairy production systems. The clipping and grazing studies were not run concurrently or within the same field, but were successive steps in selecting mixtures best-suited for rotational stocking of irrigated pastures in the Intermountain West. Summaries of productivity data have been reported elsewhere (MacAdam, 2002; MacAdam et al., 2004)

An Optimal Preview Control for Linear Systems

A technique for synthesizing closed-loop control of linear time-invariant systems during tracking of previewed inputs is presented. The derived control is directly dependent upon the properties of the controlled system and is obtained by minimization of a defined previewed output error.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/65011/1/MacAdam 1980 ASME Optimal Control paper.pd
