    Comment on ``Neutrino masses and mixing angles in a predictive theory of fermion masses''

    In the extension of the Dimopoulos--Hall--Raby model of the fermion mass matrices to the neutrino sector, there is an entry in the up-quark and neutrino Dirac mass matrices which can be assumed to arise from the Yukawa coupling of a {\bf 120}, instead of a {\bf 10} or a {\bf 126}, of SO(10). Although this assumption leads to an extra undetermined complex parameter in the model, the resulting lepton mixing matrix exhibits the remarkable feature that the ντ \nu_{\tau} does not mix with the other two neutrinos. Making a reasonable assumption about the extra parameter, we are able to fit the large-mixing-angle MSW solution of the solar-neutrino problem, and we obtain mντ10 m_{\nu_{\tau}} \sim 10 eV, the right mass range to close the Universe.     Right-handed-neutrino Majorana mass at the SUSY GUT scale and the solution of the solar-neutrino problem

    In the SUSY GUT scenario, it is natural to assume the right-handed-neutrino Majorana-mass scale to be 101610^{16} GeV. This will in principle lead, by the seesaw mechanism, to a ντ \nu_{\tau} mass of order mt2/(1016GeV)3×103eV m_t^2 / (10^{16}\, {\rm GeV}) \sim 3 \times 10^{-3}\, {\rm eV} . This suggests that the solution of the solar-neutrino puzzle should be either the MSW effect in νe\nu_e--ντ\nu_{\tau} oscillations, with mντ2105eV2 m_{\nu_{\tau}}^2 \sim 10^{-5}\, {\rm eV}^2 , or long-wavelength νe\nu_e--νμ\nu_{\mu} oscillations, with mνμ21010eV2 m_{\nu_{\mu}}^2 \sim 10^{-10}\, {\rm eV}^2 . These solutions require unexpectedly large mixings of νe \nu_e with ντ \nu_{\tau} and νμ \nu_{\mu} , respectively.     Establishment and validation of cyberknife irradiation in a syngeneic glioblastoma mouse model

    CyberKnife stereotactic radiosurgery (CK-SRS) precisely delivers radiation to intracranial tumors. However, the underlying radiobiological mechanisms at high single doses are not yet fully understood. Here, we established and evaluated the early radiobiological effects of CK-SRS treatment at a single dose of 20 Gy after 15 days of tumor growth in a syngeneic glioblastoma-mouse model. Exact positioning was ensured using a custom-made, non-invasive, and trackable frame. One superimposed target volume for the CK-SRS planning was created from the fused tumor volumes obtained from MRIs prior to irradiation. Dose calculation and delivery were planned using a single-reference CT scan. Six days after irradiation, tumor volumes were measured using MRI scans, and radiobiological effects were assessed using immunofluorescence staining. We found that CK-SRS treatment reduced tumor volume by approximately 75%, impaired cell proliferation, diminished tumor vasculature, and increased immune response. The accuracy of the delivered dose was demonstrated by staining of DNA double-strand breaks in accordance with the planned dose distribution. Overall, we confirmed that our proposed setup enables the precise irradiation of intracranial tumors in mice using only one reference CT and superimposed MRI volumes. Thus, our proposed mouse model for reproducible CK-SRS can be used to investigate radiobiological effects and develop novel therapeutic approaches

    Gender, foundation degrees and the knowledge economy

    This article questions the concept of ‘education for employment’, which constructs a discourse of individual and societal benefit in a knowledge‐driven economy. Recent policy emphasis in the European Union promotes the expansion of higher education and short‐cycle vocational awards such as the intermediate two‐year Foundation Degree recently introduced into England and Wales. Studies of vocational education and training (VET) and the knowledge economy have focused largely on the governance of education and on the development and drift of policy. Many VET programmes have also been considered for their classed, raced and gendered take‐up and subsequent effect on employment. This article builds on both fields of study to engage with the finer cross‐analyses of gender, social class, poverty, race and citizenship. In its analysis of policy texts the article argues that in spite of a discourse of inclusivity, an expanded higher education system has generated new inequalities, deepening social stratification. Drawing on early analyses of national quantitative data sets, it identifies emerging gendered, classed and raced patterns and considers these in relation to occupationally and hierarchically stratified labour markets, both within and without the knowledge economy

    Muon-anti-neutrino <---> electron-anti-neutrino mixing: analysis of recent indications and implications for neutrino oscillation phenomenology

    We reanalyze the recent data from the Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector (LSND) experiment, that might indicate anti-nu_muanti-nu_e mixing. This indication is not completely excluded by the negative results of established accelerator and reactor neutrino oscillation searches. We quantify the region of compatibility by means of a thorough statistical analysis of all the available data, assuming both two-flavor and three-flavor neutrino oscillations. The implications for various theoretical scenarios and for future oscillation searches are studied.     Leptonic CP Violation in Supersymmetric Standard Model

    We point out the possibility of spontaneous and hard CP-violation in the scalar potential of R-parity broken supersymmetric Standard Model. The existence of spontaneous CP-violation depends crucially on the R-parity breaking terms in the superpotential and, in addition, on the choice of the soft supersymmetry breaking terms. Unlike in theories with R-parity conservation, it is natural, in the context of the present model, for the sneutrinos to acquire (complex) vacuum expectation values. In the context of this model we examine here the global implications, like the strength of the CP-violating interactions and the neutrino masses.Comment: REVTEX, 15 page

    Pathophysiology of acute experimental pancreatitis: Lessons from genetically engineered animal models and new molecular approaches

    The incidence of acute pancreatitis is growing and worldwide population-based studies report a doubling or tripling since the 1970s. 25% of acute pancreatitis are severe and associated with histological changes of necrotizing pancreatitis. There is still no specific medical treatment for acute pancreatitis. The average mortality resides around 10%. In order to develop new specific medical treatment strategies for acute pancreatitis, a better understanding of the pathophysiology during the onset of acute pancreatitis is necessary. Since it is difficult to study the early acinar events in human pancreatitis, several animal models of acute pancreatitis have been developed. By this, it is hoped that clues into human pathophysiology become possible. In the last decade, while employing molecular biology techniques, a major progress has been made. The genome of the mouse was recently sequenced. Various strategies are possible to prove a causal effect of a single gene or protein, using either gain-of-function (i.e., overexpression of the protein of interest) or loss-of-function studies (i.e., genetic deletion of the gene of interest). The availability of transgenic mouse models and gene deletion studies has clearly increased our knowledge about the pathophysiology of acute pancreatitis and enables us to study and confirm in vitro findings in animal models. In addition, transgenic models with specific genetic deletion or overexpression of genes help in understanding the role of one specific protein in a cascade of inflammatory processes such as pancreatitis where different proteins interact and co-react.     The Central Temperature of the Sun can be Measured via the 7^7Be Solar Neutrino Line

    A precise test of the theory of stellar evolution can be performed by measuring the difference in average energy between the neutrino line produced by 7Be{\rm ^7Be} electron capture in the solar interior and the corresponding neutrino line produced in a terrestrial laboratory. The high temperatures in the center of the sun broaden the line asymmetrically, FWHM = 1.6~keV, and cause an average energy shift of 1.3~keV.
