The intrinsic value of HFO features as a biomarker of epileptic activity
High frequency oscillations (HFOs) are a promising biomarker of epileptic
brain tissue and activity. HFOs additionally serve as a prototypical example of
challenges in the analysis of discrete events in high-temporal resolution,
intracranial EEG data. Two primary challenges are 1) dimensionality reduction,
and 2) assessing feasibility of classification. Dimensionality reduction
assumes that the data lie on a manifold with dimension less than that of the
feature space. However, previous HFO analyses have assumed a linear manifold,
global across time, space (i.e. recording electrode/channel), and individual
patients. Instead, we assess both a) whether linear methods are appropriate and
b) the consistency of the manifold across time, space, and patients. We also
estimate bounds on the Bayes classification error to quantify the distinction
between two classes of HFOs (those occurring during seizures and those
occurring due to other processes). This analysis provides the foundation for
future clinical use of HFO features and buides the analysis for other discrete
events, such as individual action potentials or multi-unit activity.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Institutional Role in Gunung Walat Educational Forest Policy: Discourse and Historical Approaches
Institutional science with various approaches have been used in analysing forest policy at international level and in Indonesia. This research used institutional science with discourse and historical approach for the policy of Forest Territory with Special Purpose (Kawasan Hutan dengan Tujuan Khusus, KHDTK). This research study the KHDTK case of Gunung Walat Educational Forest (Hutan Pendidikan Gunung Walat, HPGW). The goal of this research is to understand discourse/narration of policy and describe the policy space for HPGW and KHDTK. Institutional analysis in this research used discourse and historical approach. Discourse analysis used IDS model supported with Wittmer-Birner model and Eden-Ackermann diagram. On the other hand, historical approach used the historical relationship. The research outcome showed that the process of creating HPGW policy is not linear, but being affected by policy discourse/narration in the process of creating HPGW policy. Faculty of Forestry IPB has been successfully managing HPGW because of the success to build policy discourse/narration which is supported by the knowledge of HPGW managers, cooperation network, and interest and power. Meanwhile, external party perceived and believed the importance of HPGW management for forestry education. The success key of HPGW policy is in structuring the institution that control the behavior of HPGW managers, so the managers obtained trust from third parties to create interest alliances which can boost HPGW management performance. HPGW policy can be used to fulfill KHDTK policy space according to Article 8, Forestry Law Number 41 Year 1999

Recursive Algorithms for Computing the Cramer-Rao Bound
Computation of the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) on estimator variance requires the inverse or the pseudo-inverse Fisher information matrix (FIM). Direct matrix inversion can be computationally intractable when the number of unknown parameters is large. In this correspondence, we compare several iterative methods for approximating the CRB using matrix splitting and preconditioned conjugate gradient algorithms. For a large class of inverse problems, we show that nonmonotone Gauss-Seidel and preconditioned conjugate gradient algorithms require significantly fewer flops for convergence than monotone “bound preserving” algorithms.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/85866/1/Fessler94.pd
Numerical simulation of a Controlled-Controlled-Not (CCN) quantum gate in a chain of three interacting nuclear spins system
We present the study of a quantum Controlled-Controlled-Not gate, implemented
in a chain of three nuclear spins weakly Ising interacting between all of them,
that is, taking into account first and second neighbor spin interactions. This
implementation is done using a single resonant -pulse on the initial state
of the system (digital and superposition). The fidelity parameter is used to
determine the behavior of the CCN quantum gate as a function of the ratio of
the second neighbor interaction coupling constant to the first neighbor
interaction coupling constant (). We found that for we can
have a well defined CCN quantum gate.Comment: 9 pages, 5 fugure
Pyrolysis of mixed plastic waste (DKR-350):Effect of washing pre-treatment and fate of chlorine
Pyrolysis of a post-consumer plastic waste stream (DKR-350) has been performed at a laboratory scale in a fixed-bed reactor at 500 °C. DKR-350 is a complex mixture of post-consumer plastics comprising polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyethylene terephthalate, clogged materials, multilayer flexibles, together with considerable amounts of biogenic and inorganic residues and halogens. The influence of different washing procedures on feedstock composition and pyrolysis product yields was investigated. Washing effectively lowers the biogenic, inorganic and halogen contents in DKR-350, though does not affect the yield of the desired oil/wax (66 to 69 wt%). 27% of the oil/wax lies in the boiling point range of naphtha and gasoline (150 ppm), showing the presence of recalcitrant organochlorides in the feed. Thus, post-treatment is still required to upgrade it to feedstock for the production of fuels and/or chemicals
