Reparameterization invariants for anisotropic Bianchi I cosmology with a massless scalar source

Intrinsic time-dependent invariants are constructed for classical, flat, homogeneous, anisotropic cosmology with a massless scalar material source. Invariance under the time reparameterization-induced canonical symmetry group is displayed explicitly.Comment: 28 pages, to appear in General Relativity and Gravitation. Substantial revisions: added foundational overview section 2, chose new intrinsic time variable, worked with dimensionless variables, added appendix with comparison and criticism of other approache

Extra-osseous osteochondroma-like soft tissue mass of the patello-femoral space

BACKGROUND: Extraskeletal cartilaginous tumors are uncommon. Osteochondromas usually arise from the metaphyseal region of the growing skeleton. CASE PRESENTATION: A 53 year old man presented with a three years history of anterior knee pain and inability to flex his knee more than 90°. Clinical examination and imaging studies revealed a nodular calcific mass in the anterior portion of the knee, displacing the medial portion of the patellar tendon. Following excision, histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of extra-osseous osteochondroma-like soft tissue mass, with no recurrence 24 months after surgery. CONCLUSION: An integrated clinical-pathologic diagnosis helps to clarify the nature of extraskeletal cartilaginous tumors that can arise at unusual anatomic site. Complete local surgical excision is the management of choice

Bamboo skewer perforation of the bowel: Computed tomography appearances

A 25-year-old Chinese woman presented with a painful left-lower-quadrant abdominal mass. Computed tomography (CT) demonstrated a dense forked foreign body within an extraluminal mass. A 2.5 cm bamboo skewer surrounded by inflamed omentum was found at laparotomy. Different CT densities of bamboo skewers were obtained when exposed to air, water and 2% Gastrografin in an in vitro experiment. Awareness of the possible variations in appearances of wooden foreign bodies in and around the bowel may aid their CT diagnoses

To study the efficiency of the chemical method for red rice control three field experi ments were carried out at Low Itajai Valley in the years 1978 and 1980. The herbicides 2,4-D amine, benthiocarb, oxadiazon, metolachlor, and alachlor were applied on submerged fields, 13 to 15 days before the seeding of the cultivated rice. The control cf red rice was over 75 % and total for the other common weeds with the herbicides. None of the herbicides caused any damage to the cultivated rice. The yields for rice were depending on the level of red rice and other weeds infestation

Abstract

A 49 year-old male visited a nearby clinic five years back with a complaint of pain in the right knee during exercise. Plain radiographs revealed absence of any anomalies. He began to feel a lumpy mass in his right knee two years back. The pain worsened, on imaging, an anomaly was identified in the infrapatellar fat pad of his right knee, and he was subsequently referred to our department where he was hospitalized. On examination, a mass extending on either side of the patellar tendon was identified along with rigid tenderness in that area. The knee’s range of motion was 0degrees-130degrees, and knee flexion was accompanied by pain. The results of blood tests were normal. A plain radiograph of the knee revealed multiple ossifying tumors at a site consistent with the infrapatellar fat pad. T1-weighted MRI exhibited low-signal intensity, while T2-weighted MRI exhibited a mosaic-shaped tumor. We performed arthroscopic surgery to excise the tumor. The patient resumed work shortly after surgery and did not experience any pain during the two year postoperative observation period. The joint’s range of motion improved to the extent that it was comparable with that of the left knee. No recurrence was observed on radiographic examination. In past studies, resection of similar tumors has been performed with an arthrotomy; however, we performed arthroscopic resection on our patient, who demonstrated a quick improvement in symptoms and range of motion after surgery. We believe that arthroscopic surgery is a feasible option to consider while treating such cases.</p
