Concrete - filled steel tube columns - tests compared with Eurocode 4
This paper summarises the data from 1819 tests on concrete-filled steel tube columns and compares their failure load with the prediction of Eurocode 4. The full data is given on the website http://web.ukonline.co.uk/asccs2 . The comparison with Eurocode 4 is discussed and shows that Eurocode 4 can be used with confidence and generally gives good agreement with test results, the average Test/EC4 ratio for all tests being 1.11. The Eurocode 4 limitations on concrete strength could be safely extended to concrete with a cylinder strength of 75 N/mm2 for circular sections and 60 N/mm2 for rectangular sections

2D3D2D: a diagnostic approach to textile and fashion research practice
In the School of Art and Design, at Nottingham Trent University, a range of research methods and practices have developed through PhD and post doctoral study in relation to printed textile design and new technology. Individual research projects have addressed pattern (Bunce 1993); photographic imagery (Briggs 1997); colour (Leak 2001); non-repeating pattern (Carlisle 2003) and 2D/3D (Townsend 2003). Post-doctoral research (Briggs-Goode & Bunce 2001) and Townsend's research into 2D/3D informed a group project and exhibition Transforming Shape (2004). The outcomes created by Gillian Bunce, Amanda Briggs-Goode, Gillian Bunce, Rosemary Goulding and Katherine Townsend explored the relationships between innovative surface imagery and three-dimensional prototypes, based on the simple geometric forms of square, rectangle and circle
General aviation approach and landing practices
The characteristics of air traffic patterns at uncontrolled airports and techniques used by a group of general aviation pilots in landing light airplanes are documented. The results of some 1,600 radar tracks taken at four uncontrolled airports and some 600 landings made by 22 pilots in two, four place, single engine light airplanes show that the uncontrolled traffic pattern is highly variable. The altitudes, distances, and piloting procedures utilized may affect the ability for pilots to see-and-avoid in this environment. Most landing approaches were conducted at an airspeed above recommended, resulting in significant floating during flare and touchdowns that were relatively flat and often nose-low
Exploring Teacher Perceptions on the Effectiveness of the Freshman Academy
A Southeastern school district created freshman academies to assist freshman students with strategies and support they need to combat ninth-grade failure successfully, but little change was observed. The purpose of the study was to explore teachers\u27 perceptions of the freshman academy\u27s transition program structure, benefits, challenges, and effectiveness. The conceptual framework for this study encompassed elements of constructivist theory, which explains how children adapt to their environments and learn how to process information successfully. The research questions examined teachers\u27 perceptions regarding the benefits, challenges, and perceived effectiveness of the freshman academy intervention program. The data for this basic qualitative study were obtained through semi-structured interviews with seven freshman academy teachers who volunteered. The data were open-coded and reduced to reveal six themes: learning in the academy is dependent on the teacher, learning in the academy includes distinct classroom practices, teachers report challenges with the freshman academy model, teachers have concerns about the freshman academy model, there are many advantages to the freshman academy model, and teachers build relationships that foster learning. Using the findings, a position paper was created with recommendations to strengthen the academy in the district. If the recommendations are implemented the transition program may increase communication and effectiveness of the working and learning environment and promote positive social change by increasing freshman persistence toward graduation
What makes a 'good group'? Exploring the characteristics and performance of undergraduate student groups
Group work forms the foundation for much of student learning within higher education, and has many educational, social and professional benefits. This study aimed to explore the determinants of success or failure for undergraduate student teams and to define a ‘good group’ through considering three aspects of group success: the task, the individuals, and the team. We employed a mixed methodology, combining demographic data with qualitative observations and task and peer evaluation scores. We determined associations between group dynamic and behaviour, demographic composition, member personalities and attitudes towards one another, and task success. We also employed a cluster analysis to create a model outlining the attributes of a good small group learning team in veterinary education. This model highlights that student groups differ in measures of their effectiveness as teams, independent of their task performance. On the basis of this, we suggest that groups who achieve high marks in tasks cannot be assumed to have acquired team working skills, and therefore if these are important as a learning outcome, they must be assessed directly alongside the task output
Description of an experimental (hydrogen peroxide) rocket system and its use in measuring aileron and rudder effectiveness of a light airplane
A hydrogen peroxide fueled rocket system, which is to be used as a research tool in flight studies of stall and spin maneuvers, was installed on a light, four place general aviation airplane. The pilot controlled rocket system produces moments about either the roll or the yaw body axis to augment or oppose the aerodynamic forces and inertial moments acting on the airplane during various flight maneuvers, including the spin. These controlled moments of a known magnitude can be used in various ways to help analyze and interpret the importance of the various factors which influence airplane maneuvers. The rocket system and its installation in the airplane are described, and the results of flight rests used to measure rudder and aileron effectiveness at airspeeds above the stall are presented. These tests also serve to demonstrate the operational readiness of the rocket system for future research operations
A Phase Space Approach to Gravitational Enropy
We examine the definition S = ln Omega as a candidate "gravitational entropy"
function. We calculate its behavior for gravitationl and density perturbations
in closed, open and flat cosmologies and find that in all cases it increases
monotonically. Using the formalism to calculate the gravitational entropy
produced during inflation gives the canonical answer. We compare the behavior
of S with the behavior of the square of the Weyl tensor. Applying the formalism

Profile likelihood confidence intervals for ECx
Confidence intervals for effective concentrations (EC\u27s) are commonly computed in dose response curve analyse. Profile intervals offer an alternative method for computing the confidence intervals in situations where delta method based confidence intervals produce intervals with values outside of a practical range. In this document, we describe the computation of profile intervals for EC\u27s. We then introduce an R function, profile.ECx(), for computing these intervals from a dose response model fit by the drm() function in the drc package. Supplemental material includes three files of R code that define profile.ECx() and its helper functions and R code and data for the two examples
General properties of cosmological models with an Isotropic Singularity
Much of the published work regarding the Isotropic Singularity is performed
under the assumption that the matter source for the cosmological model is a
barotropic perfect fluid, or even a perfect fluid with a -law equation
of state. There are, however, some general properties of cosmological models
which admit an Isotropic Singularity, irrespective of the matter source. In
particular, we show that the Isotropic Singularity is a point-like singularity
and that vacuum space-times cannot admit an Isotropic Singularity. The
relationships between the Isotropic Singularity, and the energy conditions, and
the Hubble parameter is explored. A review of work by the authors, regarding
the Isotropic Singularity, is presented.Comment: 18 pages, 1 figur
Are braneworlds born isotropic?
It has recently been suggested that an isotropic singularity may be a generic
feature of brane cosmologies, even in the inhomogeneous case. Using the
covariant and gauge-invariant approach we present a detailed analysis of linear
perturbations of the isotropic model which is a past attractor in
the phase space of homogeneous Bianchi models on the brane. We find that for
matter with an equation of state parameter , the dimensionless
variables representing generic anisotropic and inhomogeneous perturbations
decay as , showing that the model is asymptotically stable
in the past. We conclude that brane universes are born with isotropy naturally
built-in, contrary to standard cosmology. The observed large-scale homogeneity
and isotropy of the universe can therefore be explained as a consequence of the
initial conditions if the brane-world paradigm represents a description of the
