We prove a theorem of Tits type about automorphism groups for compact Kahler manifolds, which has been conjectured in the paper [KOZ].Comment: Inventiones Mathematicae (to appear), 11 page

A characterization of compact complex tori via automorphism groups

We show that a compact Kaehler manifold X is a complex torus if both the continuous part and discrete part of some automorphism group G of X are infinite groups, unless X is bimeromorphic to a non-trivial G-equivariant fibration. Some applications to dynamics are given.Comment: title changed, to appear in Math. An

    Blowing up generalized Kahler 4-manifolds

We show that the blow-up of a generalized Kahler 4-manifold in a nondegenerate complex point admits a generalized Kahler metric. As with the blow-up of complex surfaces, this metric may be chosen to coincide with the original outside a tubular neighbourhood of the exceptional divisor. To accomplish this, we develop a blow-up operation for bi-Hermitian manifolds.Comment: 16 page

Western North Pacific Integrated Physical-Biogeochemical Ocean Observation Experiment (INBOX): Part 2. Biogeochemical responses to eddies and typhoons revealed from the S1 mooring and shipboard measurements

    Get PDF
An interdisciplinary project called S1-INBOX (Western North Pacific Integrated PhysicalBiogeochemical Ocean Observation Experiment conducted around the S1 biogeochemical mooring site) was carried out during the summer of 2011 in the oligotrophic, subtropical North Pacific Ocean near biogeochemical mooring S1 (30° N, 145° E). Results from the S1 mooring during S1-INBOX revealed a large export flux at a depth of 200 m, a high chlorophyll a concentration in the deep chlorophyll maximum layer, and a high potential photochemical efficiency of photosystem II. These phenomena were associated with vertical uplift of isopycnal surfaces at the edge of a cyclonic eddy and a transition from the cyclonic eddy to an anticyclonic eddy. Shipboard biogeochemical surveys conducted during oligotrophic conditions in July 2011 revealed that the phytoplankton community in these waters was dominated by small species that are responsive to intermittent supplies of nutrients. Surface wind forcing because of Typhoons MA-ON and SONCA may have generated near-inertial oscillations. Diapycnal mixing associated with near-inertial waves was also related to high export fluxes, the indication being that propagation of near-inertial internal waves and subsequent mixing may have been important to biogeochemical phenomena during S1-INBOX

Virtually abelian K\"ahler and projective groups

We characterise the virtually abelian groups which are fundamental groups of compact K\"ahler manifolds and of smooth projective varieties. We show that a virtually abelian group is K\"ahler if and only if it is projective. In particular, this allows to describe the K\"ahler condition for such groups in terms of integral symplectic representations

The photometric properties of a vast stellar substructure in the outskirts of M33

We have surveyed 40\sim40sq.degrees surrounding M33 with CFHT MegaCam in the g and i filters, as part of the Pan-Andromeda Archaeological Survey. Our observations are deep enough to resolve the top 4mags of the red giant branch population in this galaxy. We have previously shown that the disk of M33 is surrounded by a large, irregular, low-surface brightness substructure. Here, we quantify the stellar populations and structure of this feature using the PAndAS data. We show that the stellar populations of this feature are consistent with an old population with <[Fe/H]>1.6<[Fe/H]>\sim-1.6dex and an interquartile range in metallicity of 0.5\sim0.5dex. We construct a surface brightness map of M33 that traces this feature to μV33\mu_V\simeq33mags\,arcsec2^{-2}. At these low surface brightness levels, the structure extends to projected radii of 40\sim40kpc from the center of M33 in both the north-west and south-east quadrants of the galaxy. Overall, the structure has an "S-shaped" appearance that broadly aligns with the orientation of the HI disk warp. We calculate a lower limit to the integrated luminosity of the structure of 12.7±0.5-12.7\pm0.5mags, comparable to a bright dwarf galaxy such as Fornax or AndII and slightly less than $1\$ of the total luminosity of M33. Further, we show that there is tentative evidence for a distortion in the distribution of young stars near the edge of the HI disk that occurs at similar azimuth to the warp in HI. The data also hint at a low-level, extended stellar component at larger radius that may be a M33 halo component. We revisit studies of M33 and its stellar populations in light of these new results, and we discuss possible formation scenarios for the vast stellar structure. Our favored model is that of the tidal disruption of M33 in its orbit around M31.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 17 figures. ApJ preprint forma

Algebraic varieties with automorphism groups of maximal rank

We confirm, to some extent, the belief that a projective variety X has the largest number (relative to the dimension of X) of independent commuting automorphisms of positive entropy only when X is birational to a complex torus or a quotient of a torus. We also include an addendum to an early paper though it is not used in the present paper.Comment: Mathematische Annalen (to appear

Properties of the chiral spin liquid state in generalized spin ladders

We study zero temperature properties of a system of two coupled quantum spin chains subject to fields explicitly breaking time reversal symmetry and parity. Suitable choice of the strength of these fields gives a model soluble by Bethe Ansatz methods which allows to determine the complete magnetic phase diagram of the system and the asymptotics of correlation functions from the finite size spectrum. The chiral properties of the system for both the integrable and the nonintegrable case are studied using numerical techniques.Comment: 19 pages, 9eps figures, Late

Chiral Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in the frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a pyrochlore slab

Ordering of the geometrically frustrated two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a pyrochlore slab is studied by Monte Carlo simulations. In contrast to the kagom\'e Heisenberg antiferromagnet, the model exhibits locally non-coplanar spin structures at low temperatures, bearing nontrivial chiral degrees of freedom. Under certain conditions, the model exhibits a novel Kosterlitz-Thouless-type transition at a finite temperature associated with these chiral degrees of freedom

Willmore Surfaces of Constant Moebius Curvature

We study Willmore surfaces of constant Moebius curvature KK in S4S^4. It is proved that such a surface in S3S^3 must be part of a minimal surface in R3R^3 or the Clifford torus. Another result in this paper is that an isotropic surface (hence also Willmore) in S4S^4 of constant KK could only be part of a complex curve in C2R4C^2\cong R^4 or the Veronese 2-sphere in S4S^4. It is conjectured that they are the only examples possible. The main ingredients of the proofs are over-determined systems and isoparametric functions.Comment: 16 pages.
