Simulating Turbulence Using the Astrophysical Discontinuous Galerkin Code TENET
In astrophysics, the two main methods traditionally in use for solving the
Euler equations of ideal fluid dynamics are smoothed particle hydrodynamics and
finite volume discretization on a stationary mesh. However, the goal to
efficiently make use of future exascale machines with their ever higher degree
of parallel concurrency motivates the search for more efficient and more
accurate techniques for computing hydrodynamics. Discontinuous Galerkin (DG)
methods represent a promising class of methods in this regard, as they can be
straightforwardly extended to arbitrarily high order while requiring only small
stencils. Especially for applications involving comparatively smooth problems,
higher-order approaches promise significant gains in computational speed for
reaching a desired target accuracy. Here, we introduce our new astrophysical DG
code TENET designed for applications in cosmology, and discuss our first
results for 3D simulations of subsonic turbulence. We show that our new DG
implementation provides accurate results for subsonic turbulence, at
considerably reduced computational cost compared with traditional finite volume
methods. In particular, we find that DG needs about 1.8 times fewer degrees of
freedom to achieve the same accuracy and at the same time is more than 1.5
times faster, confirming its substantial promise for astrophysical

Erythrocyte complement receptor 1 (CR1) expression level is not associated with polymorphisms in the promoter or 3' untranslated regions of the CR1 gene
Complement receptor 1 (CR1) expression level on erythrocytes is genetically determined and is associated with high (H) and low (L) expression alleles identified by a HindIII restriction fragment-length polymorphism (RFLP) in intron 27 of the CR1 gene. The L allele confers protection against severe malaria in Papua New Guinea, probably because erythrocytes with low CR1 expression, are less able to form pathogenic rosettes with Plasmodium falciparum-infected erythrocytes. Despite the biological importance of erythrocyte CR1, the genetic mutation controlling CR1 expression level remains unknown. We investigated the possibility that mutations in the upstream or 3′ untranslated regions of the CR1 gene could control erythrocyte CR1 level. We identified several novel polymorphisms; however, the mutations did not segregate with erythrocyte CR1 expression level or the H and L alleles. Therefore, high and low erythrocyte CR1 levels cannot be explained by polymorphisms in transcriptional control elements in the upstream or 3′ untranslated regions of the CR1 gene
Acoustic fatigue and sound transmission characteristics of a ram composite panel design
An experimental study to determine the acoustic fatigue characteristics of a flat multi-layered structural panel is described. The test panel represented a proposed design for the outer skin of a research application module to be housed within the space shuttle orbiter vehicle. The test specimen was mounted in one wall of the Wyle 100,000 cu ft reverberation room and exposed to a broadband acoustic environment having an overall level of 145 db. The test panel was exposed to nine separate applications of the acoustic environment, each application consisting of 250 seconds duration. Upon completion of the ninth test run, the specimen was exposed to a simulated micrometeoroid impact near the panel center. One additional test run of 250 seconds duration was then performed to complete the overall simulation of 50 flight missions. The experimental results show that no significant fatigue damage occurred until the test specimen was exposed to a simulated micrometeoroid impact. The intermediate foam layer forming the core of the test specimen suffered considerable damage due to this impact, causing a marked variation in the dynamic characteristics of the overall test panel. During the final application of the acoustic environment, the strain and acceleration response spectra showed considerable variation from those spectra obtained prior to impact of the panel. Fatigue damage from acoustic loading however, was limited to partial de-bonding around the edges of the composite panel
Historical roots of Agile methods: where did “Agile thinking” come from?
The appearance of Agile methods has been the most noticeable change to software process thinking in the last fifteen years [16], but in fact many of the “Agile ideas” have been around since 70’s or even before. Many studies and reviews have been conducted about Agile methods which ascribe their emergence as a reaction against traditional methods. In this paper, we argue that although Agile methods are new as a whole, they have strong roots in the history of software engineering. In addition to the iterative and incremental approaches that have been in use since 1957 [21], people who criticised the traditional methods suggested alternative approaches which were actually Agile ideas such as the response to change, customer involvement, and working software over documentation. The authors of this paper believe that education about the history of Agile thinking will help to develop better understanding as well as promoting the use of Agile methods. The Football Association’s Child Protection in Football Research Project 2002-2006: Rationale, design and first year results
In common with most sport organisations, the English Football Association has come relatively recently to the issue of child protection. Abuses of various kinds have been known about in the sport for many years but, until the late 1990s, very little systematic work was undertaken to address this. The launch of a Child Protection Strategy by the Engalish FA in May 2000 reflected recognition by those in authority within the sport that child abuse and protection were properly the subject of football policy and should become embedded in all aspects of the affiliated game. In addition to adopting child protection, the then-Chief Executive Officer of the FA made a commitment to evidence-based policy in his strategic plan for the game. In line with this commitment, the FA commissioned a 5 year study of the impact of child protection on the game, the first year of which constituted an audit of the state of child protection in the affiliated game. Data were collected through 11 internet surveys, 32 club case studies, over 200 interviews with various stakeholders and an analysis of 132 case files for child abuse referrals. This paper sets out the context of child protection in sport more generally and the background to the FA's child protection reseach project in particular. It also presents selected first year results for key stakeholder groups
Measuring the impact of child protection through Activation States
Child protection (CP) has risen to the top of the UK sports policy agenda in the past four years and the Football Association has invested in this major strategy as part of its commitment to “use the power of football to build a better future” (FA, 2000a). Evidencing the impact of child protection is, however, a complex task, exacerbated by the dearth of measurement tools that exist for this purpose in sport. This article presents a new model of ‘Activation States’ that has been designed and used to measure shifts in football culture as child protection has begun to impact upon the sport. The model is used to map changes over time related to the knowledge, feelings, actions and discourses of key stakeholders in football. The research for which the model was designed is a longitudinal study, commissioned by the English Football (soccer) Association, on the impact of the organisation’s child protection strategy on the culture of soccer. Sample data from the project are used to illustrate the model and to examine its potential and limitations as a tool for measuring impacts in child protection and other social inclusion themes
Discontinuous high-order finite-volume/finite-element method for inviscid compressible flows
The discontinuous, hybrid control-volume/finite-element method merges the desirable conservative properties and intuitive physical formulation of the finite-volume technique, with the capability of local arbitrary high-order accuracy distinctive of the discontinuous finite-element method. This relatively novel scheme has been previously applied to the solution of advection-diffusion problems and the shallow-water equations, and is in the present work extended to the Euler equations. The derivation of the method is presented in the general multi-dimensional case, and selected numerical problems are solved in the one- and two-dimensional case
Gender, war and militarism: making and questioning the links
The gender dynamics of militarism have traditionally been seen as straightforward, given the cultural mythologies of warfare and the disciplining of ‘masculinity’ that occurs in the training and use of men's capacity for violence in the armed services. However, women's relation to both war and peace has been varied and complex. It is women who have often been most prominent in working for peace, although there are no necessary links between women and opposition to militarism. In addition, more women than ever are serving in many of today's armies, with feminists rather uncertain on how to relate to this phenomenon. In this article, I explore some of the complexities of applying gender analyses to militarism and peace work in sites of conflict today, looking most closely at the Israeli feminist group, New Profile, and their insistence upon the costs of the militarized nature of Israeli society. They expose the very permeable boundaries between the military and civil society, as violence seeps into the fears and practices of everyday life in Israel. I place their work in the context of broader feminist analysis offered by researchers such as Cynthia Enloe and Cynthia Cockburn, who have for decades been writing about the ‘masculinist’ postures and practices of warfare, as well as the situation of women caught up in them. Finally, I suggest that rethinking the gendered nature of warfare must also encompass the costs of war to men, whose fundamental vulnerability to psychological abuse and physical injury is often downplayed, whether in mainstream accounts of warfare or in more specific gender analysis. Feminists need to pay careful attention to masculinity and its fragmentations in addressing the topic of gender, war and militarism
Phase coherence in quasicondensate experiments: an ab initio analysis via the stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii equation
We perform an ab initio analysis of the temperature dependence of the phase
coherence length of finite temperature, quasi-one-dimensional Bose gases
measured in the experiments of Richard et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 010405
(2003)) and Hugbart et al. (Eur. Phys. J. D 35, 155-163 (2005)), finding very
good agreement across the entire observed temperature range

Gross-Pitaevskii equation, modified to self-consistently account for
transverse, quasi-one-dimensional effects, thus making it a valid model in the
regime . We also numerically implement an
alternative identification of , based on direct analysis of the

Tourism and final wish making: the discourse of terminal illness and travel
This paper identifies a new discourse about tourism, that of final wish making. The website communications of charitable foundations whose dedicated purpose is to grant final wishes for adults with a terminal illness and their families were examined using critical discourse analysis. Specifically, the aim of this study was to understand how these charitable organisations construct, communicate and mediate meanings around terminal illness and travel for these individuals. Our study found that, promoted as a final wish in one’s life, tourism is framed as a transformational concept that is beneficial in the imminent time before death, as a legacy for life, and after death. Our analysis indicated implications around the memory-making potential of tourism and the differential power relations between final wish organisers and vulnerable individuals with a terminal illness. The paper calls for further research exploring the marginalisation of the terminally ill through tourism, but equally the potential of tourism to include the most vulnerable tourists in their final days
