Primordial magnetic fields at preheating
Using lattice techniques we investigate the generation of long range
cosmological magnetic fields during a cold electroweak transition. We will show
how magnetic fields arise, during bubble collisions, in the form of magnetic
strings. We conjecture that these magnetic strings originate from the alignment
of magnetic dipoles associated with EW sphaleron-like configurations. We also
discuss the early thermalisation of photons and the turbulent behaviour of the
scalar fields after tachyonic preheating.Comment: 7 pages. Talk presented at Lattice200
Shearing Interferometer for Quantifying the Coherence of Hard X-Ray Beams
We report a quantitative measurement of the full transverse coherence function of the 14.4 keV x-ray radiation produced by an undulator at the Swiss Light Source. An x-ray grating interferometer consisting of a beam splitter phase grating and an analyzer amplitude grating has been used to measure the degree of coherence as a function of the beam separation out to 30 m. Importantly, the technique provides a model-free and spatially resolved measurement of the complex coherence function and is not restricted to high resolution detectors and small fields of view. The spatial characterization of the wave front has important applications in discovering localized defects in beam line optics
Spectroscopic Evidence for Anisotropic S-Wave Pairing Symmetry in MgB2
Scanning tunneling spectroscopy of superconducting MgB ( K)
were studied on high-density pellets and c-axis oriented films. The sample
surfaces were chemically etched to remove surface carbonates and hydroxides,
and the data were compared with calculated spectra for all symmetry-allowed
pairing channels. The pairing potential () is best described by an
anisotropic s-wave pairing model, with , where is the angle relative to the
crystalline c-axis, meV, and meV.Comment: 4 pages and 3 figures. Submitted to Physical Review Letters.

Quantitative SERS Detection of Uric Acid via Formation of Precise Plasmonic Nanojunctions within Aggregates of Gold Nanoparticles and Cucurbit[n]uril
This work describes a rapid and highly sensitive method for the quantitative detection of an important biomarker, uric acid (UA), via surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) with a low detection limit of ~0.2 μM for multiple characteristic peaks in the fingerprint region, using a modular spectrometer. This biosensing scheme is mediated by the host-guest complexation between a macrocycle, cucurbit[7]uril (CB7), and UA, and the subsequent formation of precise plasmonic nanojunctions within the self-assembled Au NP: CB7 nanoaggregates. A facile Au NP synthesis of desirable sizes for SERS substrates has also been performed based on the classical citrate-reduction approach with an option to be facilitated using a lab-built automated synthesizer. This protocol can be readily extended to multiplexed detection of biomarkers in body fluids for clinical applications
SERS biosensors based on cucurbituril-mediated nanoaggregates for wastewater-based epidemiology
Hierarchical self-assembly of nanoparticles (NPs) mediated by macrocyclic molecules, cucurbiturils (CBs), provides a facile method to fabricate surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensors for potential applications in biosensing and environmental monitoring. In contrast to conventional techniques for wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE), CB-NP SERS sensors offer great opportunities for on-site quantification of trace chemical and biological markers due to its high sensitivity, selectivity, reproducibility, multiplexing capability and tolerance against contamination. The working principles of the CB-Au NP nanocomposites including fabrication, sensing mechanisms and structure-property relationships are explained while the design guidelines and selected examples of CB-Au NP SERS sensors are discussed. The review concludes by highlighting recent advances in this area and exploring opportunities in the context of WBE
The Dendritic magnetic avalanches in carbon-free MgB thin films with and without a deposited Au layer
From the magneto optics images (MOI), the dendritic magnetic avalanche is
known to appear dominantly for thin films of the newly discovered MgB. To
clarify the origin of this phenomenon, we studied in detail the MOI of
carbon-free MgB thin films with and without a deposited gold layer. The MOI
indicated carbon contamination was not the main source of the avalanche. The
MOI clearly showed that the deposition of metallic gold deposition on top of a
MgB thin film improved its thermal stability and suppressed the sudden
appearance of the dendritic flux avalanche. This is consistent with the
previous observation of flux noise in the magnetization.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figeure
Very strong intrinsic supercurrent carrying ability and vortex avalanches in (Ba,K)Fe2As2 superconducting single crystals
We report that single crystals of (Ba,K)Fe2As2 with Tc = 32 K have a pinning
potential, U0, as high as 10^4 K, with U0 showing very little field
depend-ence. In addition, the (Ba,K)Fe2As2 single crystals become isotropic at
low temperatures and high magnetic fields, resulting in a very rigid vortex
lattice, even in fields very close to Hc2. The rigid vortices in the two
dimensional (Ba,K)Fe2As2 distinguish this compound from 2D high Tc cuprate
superconductors with 2D vortices, and make it being capable of cearrying very
high critical current.Flux jumping due to high Jc was also observed in large
samples at low temperatures.Comment: 4 pages, 7 figures. submitte
Cloud-based Wizard of Oz as a service
The paper deals with theoretical and experimental issues of an idea towards a cloud-based Wizard of Oz in the Microsoft Azure cloud environment. Wizard of Oz is a common tool in social robotics and especially in specific applications like mental illness treatment, ambient assisted living, and many others. The final goal is to create a system with the ability to learn and replace a human wizard by an intelligent software agent, which simulates the behavior of the human. 2015 IEEE
SERS multiplexing of methylxanthine drug isomers via host-guest size matching and machine learning
Multiplexed detection and quantification of structurally similar drug molecules, methylxanthine MeX, incl. theobromine TBR, theophylline TPH and caffeine CAF, have been demonstrated via solution-based surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), achieving highly reproducible SERS signals with detection limits down to ∼50 nM for TBR and TPH, and ∼1 μM for CAF. Our SERS substrates are formed by aqueous self-assembly of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) and supramolecular host molecules, cucurbit[n]urils (CBn, n = 7, 8). We demonstrate that the binding constants can be significantly increased using a host–guest size matching approach, which enables effective enrichment of analyte molecules in close proximity to the plasmonic hotspots. The dynamic range and the robustness of the sensing scheme can be extended using machine learning algorithms, which shows promise for potential applications in therapeutic drug monitoring, food processing, forensics and veterinary science
