The agenesis and lipoma of the corpus callosum is a very rare association. We report the case of a 18-years old woman with rare epileptic seizures since the age of 6 years, normal neurological examination, as well as normal electroencephalogram. The brain computed tomography scanning and the magnetic resonance showed the lipoma and the agenesis of the corpus callosum.A agenesia e lipoma do corpo caloso é uma associação muito rara. Scattering and self-adjoint extensions of the Aharonov-Bohm hamiltonian

We consider the hamiltonian operator associated with planar sec- tions of infinitely long cylindrical solenoids and with a homogeneous magnetic field in their interior. First, in the Sobolev space H2\mathcal H^2, we characterize all generalized boundary conditions on the solenoid bor- der compatible with quantum mechanics, i.e., the boundary conditions so that the corresponding hamiltonian operators are self-adjoint. Then we study and compare the scattering of the most usual boundary con- ditions, that is, Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin.Comment: 40 pages, 5 figure

The objective of this study was to demonstrate the potential of chlorophyllfluorescence parameters to characterize maize inbreds to photosynthesis efficiency, andto be used as tool for selection of genotypes under water and nitrogen stresses. Therewere measured chlorophyll content, electron transport rate (ETR) and CO2 assimilation(A) averages, at flowering. ETR and A showed strong correlation, and were able todiscriminate significantly two groups of inbred lines: a) inbred line G1; and, b) inbredlines G2 and G3. The higher photosynthetic capacity of inbred line G1 was explained byits greater carboxylation efficiency. Similar response was observed for total aerialphytomass and grain production. The results showed the nitrogen as being an importantfactor to maize yield, which can be monitored by chlorophyll content and photochemistryparameters of photosynthesis. ETR and (A) proved to be useful parameters to evaluatecontrasting genotypes, with or without water stress

Unraveling the antifungal activity of a South American rattlesnake toxin crotamine

Crotamine is a highly basic peptide from the venom of Crotalus durissus terrificus rattlesnake. Its common gene ancestry and structural similarity with the beta-defensins, mainly due to an identical disulfide bond pattern, stimulated us to assess the antimicrobial properties of native, recombinant, and chemically synthesized crotamine. Antimicrobial activities against standard strains and clinical isolates were analyzed by the colorimetric microdilution method showing a weak antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria [MIC (Minimum Inhibitory Concentration) of 50->200 mu g/mL], with the exception of Micrococcus luteus [MIC ranging from 1 to 2 mu g/mL]. No detectable activity was observed for the filamentous fungus Aspergillus fumigatus and Trichophyton rubrum at concentrations up to 125 mu g/mL. However, a pronounced antifungal activity against Candida spp., Trichosporon spp., and Cryptococcus neoformans [12.5-50.0 mu g/mL] was observed. Chemically produced synthetic crotamine in general displayed MIC values similar to those observed for native crotamine, whereas recombinant crotamine was overridingly more potent in most assays. On the other hand, derived short linear peptides were not very effective apart from a few exceptions. Pronounced ultrastructure alteration in Candida albicans elicited by crotamine was observed by electron microscopy analyses. the peculiar specificity for highly proliferating cells was confirmed here showing potential low cytotoxic effect of crotamine against nontumoral mammal cell lines (HEK293, PC12, and primary culture astrocyte cells) compared to tumoral B16F10 cells, and no hemolytic activity was observed. Taken together these results suggest that, at low concentration, crotamine is a potentially valuable anti-yeast or candicidal agent, with low harmful effects on normal mammal cells, justifying further studies on its mechanisms of action aiming medical and industrial applications. INTRODUCTION: Induced abortion is the main cause of maternal death in Brazil. Question of its legalization has been the subject of frequent discussion. MATERIAL AND METHOD: In order to assess the influence of the variables affecting the opinion of women of reproductive age, a population-based systematic sample in the couty of Rio Grande (Southern Brazil) was examined. RESULTS: Of a total of 1,456 interviews 30% endorsed the legalization, whatever the circunstances; this percentage was directly associated with age, schooling, family income and previous induced abortion (pINTRODUÇÃO: O aborto provocado é o principal determinante da mortalidade materna no Brasil.

Substrate Coating Produced via Additive Manufacturing with Conducting Polymers: Assessment in The Development of Electrodes

The production of conductive and organic devices from a 3D printer represents a promising strategy for several areas. In particular, the synthesis of polypyrrole-coated acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) composites can be considered an important step to produce conductive supports for 3D printing. Herein, it is reported the production of ABS samples through the additive manufacturing process (3D printing) accordingly to the Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) method. The hydrophilic behavior was controlled by the surface treatment using air plasma for the following step of coating with polypyrrole (PPy) via an in situ polymerization, using two different oxidants: ferric chloride (FeCl3.6H2O) and ammonium persulfate (APS). The chemical, optical, surface, and electrical properties of these materials were characterized through Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), contact angle measurements, cyclic voltammetry, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), 4-probe electrical measurement, and mechanical tensile testing. The ABS/PPy (FeCl3) composite exhibited a low electrical contact resistance and better performance for applications that require electrodes with a good conductance level

54/2017). Publisher Copyright: © 2022, The Author(s).Purpose: Primary Health Care (PHC) is the coordinator of health care in Brazil and needs to be strengthened in the diagnostic field to increase health care quality. Aiming to improve the diagnostic tools currently available in PHC, this work describes the process of development and validation of two point-of-care biomedical devices for screening patients with syphilis or different kinds of cancer. Methods: The development of these devices followed nine stages of action based on the requirements established by the Ministry of Health. During development, both systems followed the stages of circuit planning, software simulation to verify the components used, cost assessment for the acquisition of features, simulation in contact matrix, development of the embedded system, and planning of the printed circuit board and storage box. Results: Both devices underwent preliminary functionality tests to assess their quality. The performance tests applied on the device to diagnose syphilis performed 8,733,194 requests, with a flow of 2426 requests/second, reaching the desired parameters of robustness, integrity, durability, and stability. In addition, functioning tests on the cancer-screening device indicated the ability to detect standard fluorescence in a minimal (150 uL) sample volume. Conclusions: Together, the methodology used for developing the devices resulted in promising equipment to improve the diagnosis and meet the requirements for executing technologies for testing and triaging patients in PHC.publishersversionpublishe
