Testing the retranslation hypothesis for audiovisual translation: the films of Volker Schlöndorff subtitled into English

This article uses the Descriptive Translation Studies framework to examine the English subtitles for two German films directed by Volker Schlöndorff: Die verlorene Ehre der Katharina Blum [The Lost Honour of Katharina Blum], directed in 1975, and Die Blechtrommel [The Tin Drum], from 1979, with a view to testing the earliest formulation of the retranslation hypothesis. Using the concept of translational norms as one of its main heuristic tools, this research examines an audiovisual corpus consisting of five different sets of DVD subtitles from the two films: three from Die Blechtrommel, dating from 1995, 2002 and 2010, and two from Katharina Blum, dated 2003 and 2009, thus spanning the era from the advent of digitisation and the beginning of DVD to the rise of TV and film streaming services. The data is analysed to investigate the orientation, in terms of source culture or target culture, of the translation strategies that have been activated by the subtitlers when encountering culture-specific references, and then to pinpoint any diachronic trends that come to the fore. The analysis concludes that the retranslation hypothesis does not apply in this corpus; possible reasons for this finding are discussed

Audiovisual Translation

The audiovisual translation (AVT) sector has undergone rapid changes in recent years. It would be uncontroversial to state that the various stakeholders: academics; freelancers; technology providers, and language service providers (LSP) are likely to hold diverse and interesting views about what the future holds and how they might be called upon to adapt to recent and future changes. We have conducted qualitative research with representatives of these stakeholders in an attempt to ascertain their concerns and also their predictions for the future. Our motivation was to discover where stakeholders see the sector in the next 10 years. The research was conducted in 2016 and 2018 during the Languages and Media conference on a sample of 160 experts from various sector stakeholder groups. The findings show a broad range of issues that can be summarised into three main themes: the status of the language service provider; the need for standards and metrics; and the importance of training

Patients’ Experiences With Integrated Care: Possible Solutions

At some time in their lives, most people will require health care services from multiple health care providers, whether it is for short-term unexpected ill-health, long-term chronic conditions, or co-morbidities that cross disciplines. Integration of health services is particularly important for people with chronic or complex conditions as they must negotiate a path that crosses various health care sectors. In 2011 PHC RIS undertook an abbreviated appraisal of evidence (Rapid Response) to address the following: - What types of initiatives have been implemented in Australia (or elsewhere) to integrate primary and acute health care? - How have these initiatives impacted on patients’ health outcomes and patients’ experience of their pathway through the health system

Many Australians have limited access to health care services due to a range of barriers including living a considerable distance from health services. Furthermore, there are significant shortages of healthcare workers in many rural and remote areas. Traditionally, many people have had to either travel long distances to access healthcare, or go without. Telehealth is an alternative approach, using telecommunications and information technology to supplement face-to-face delivery of healthcare services

Embracing the threat: machine translation as a solution for subtitling

Recent decades have brought significant changes in the subtitling industry, both in terms of workflow and in the context of the market for audiovisual translation. Machine translation (MT), whilst in regular use in the traditional localisation industry, has not seen a significant uptake in the subtitling arena. The SUMAT project, an EU-funded project which ran from 2011 to 2014 had as its aim the building and evaluation of viable MT solutions for the subtitling industry in nine bidirectional language pairs. As part of the project, a year-long large-scale evaluation of the output of the resulting MT engines was carried out by trained subtitlers. This paper reports on the impetus behind the investigation of MT for subtitling, previous work in this field, and discusses some of the results of this evaluation, in particular an attempt to measure the extent of productivity gain or loss for subtitlers using machine translation as opposed to working in the traditional way. The paper examines opportunities and limitations of MT as a viable option for work of this nature and makes recommendations for the training of subtitle post-editors

One approach to minimising the inequality in access for those located at a distance from health care services is through telehealth service delivery. This review examined the evidence on telehealth models in Australia and elsewhere, with a specific focus on synchronous, real-time video consultations, where patients and health care providers were present simultaneously

Are companion animals the secret to good health?

People keep pets for companionship, recreation and protection rather than for the specific purpose of enhancing health. However, a considerable body of literature supports the idea that companion animals can improve overall quality of life, including physical, social and psychological health, yet there has been no discussion of practical ways to integrate companion animals into health care and promotion. A rapid review of the literature was conducted in relation to pets/companion animals and health. Primary information sources included articles located in major citation databases (e.g. PubMed and Scopus). A snowballing technique was used to identify additional studies in bibliographies of relevant papers

Primary health care and social networking: opportunities to enhance communication

The use of social networking technologies in health care and education is known as Health 2.0. Health 2.0 incorporates principles of open access, user-generated content and networking in order to personalise health care, collaborate and promote health education. Social networking technologies that are relevant to primary care include blogs, microblogging websites such as Twitter, wikis and podcasts. Primary health care for people with intellectual disabilities

Over half a million Australians have an intellectual disability and 61% of those have a severe or profound limitation in ‘core’ activities of daily living. The sparse research available concerning health care service use by people with significant intellectual (or physical disabilities) in Australia suggests there is a higher rate of health care service utilisation in this group than for people without disabilities for all health care provider types. While overall utilisation rates appear to be higher in this group compared to the general population, primary health care access may still be insufficient to meet their needs.
