This study was performed to analyze retrospectively outcomes of stimulated in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles where the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonist was omitted on ovulation triggering day. A total of 92 consecutive IVF cycles were included in 65 women who are undergoing ovarian stimulation with recombinant FSH. A GnRH antagonist, cetrorelix 0.25 mg/day, was started when leading follicle reached 14 mm in diameter until the day of hCG administration (Group A, 66 cycles) or until the day before hCG administration (Group B, 26 cycles). The duration of ovarian stimulation, total dose of gonadotropins, serum estradiol levels on hCG administration day, and the number of oocytes retrieved were not significantly different between the two groups. The total dose of GnRH antagonist was significantly lower in Group B compared to Group A (2.7±0.8 vs. 3.2±0.9 ampoules). There was no premature luteinization in the subjects. The proportion of mature oocytes (71.4% vs. 61.7%) and fertilization rate of mature (86.3±19.7% vs. 71.8±31.7%) was significantly higher in Group B. There were no significant differences in embryo quality and clinical pregnancy rates. Our results suggest that cessation of the GnRH antagonist on the day of hCG administration during a flexible multiple-dose protocol could reduce the total dose of GnRH antagonist without compromising IVF results

An additional cysteine in a typical 2-Cys peroxiredoxin of Pseudomonas promotes functional switching between peroxidase and molecular chaperone

AbstractPeroxiredoxins (Prx) have received considerable attention during recent years. This study demonstrates that two typical Pseudomonas-derived 2-Cys Prx proteins, PpPrx and PaPrx can alternatively function as a peroxidase and chaperone. The amino acid sequences of these two Prx proteins exhibit 93% homology, but PpPrx possesses an additional cysteine residue, Cys112, instead of the alanine found in PaPrx. PpPrx predominates with a high molecular weight (HMW) complex and chaperone activity, whereas PaPrx has mainly low molecular weight (LMW) structures and peroxidase activity. Mass spectrometry and structural analyses showed the involvement of Cys112 in the formation of an inter-disulfide bond, the instability of LMW structures, the formation of HMW complexes, and increased hydrophobicity leading to functional switching of Prx proteins between peroxidase and chaperone

Scattering of adiabatically aligned molecules by nonresonant optical standing waves

We study the effect of rotational state-dependent alignment in the scattering of molecules by optical fields. CS2 molecules in their lowest few rotational states are adiabatically aligned and transversely accelerated by a nonresonant optical standing wave. The width of the measured transverse velocity distribution increases to 160 m/s with the field intensity, while its central peak position moves from 10 to -10 m/s. These changes are well reproduced by numerical simulations based on the rotational state-dependent alignment but cannot be modeled when ignoring these effects. Moreover, the molecular scattering by an off-resonant optical field amounts to manipulating the translational motion of molecules in a rotational state-specific way. Conversely, our results demonstrate that scattering from a nonresonant optical standing wave is a viable method for rotational state selection of nonpolar molecules

Single quantum dot selection and tailor-made photonic device integration using nanoscale focus pinspot

Among the diverse platforms of quantum light sources, epitaxially grown semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are one of the most attractive workhorses for realizing various quantum photonic technologies owing to their outstanding brightness and scalability. There exist various material systems for these QDs based on their appropriate emission bandwidth; however, only a few material systems have successfully grown single or low-density QDs, which are essential for quantum light sources. In most other material systems, it is difficult to realize low-density QDs, and the mesa-etching process is usually undergone in order to reduce their density. Nevertheless, the etching process irreversibly destroys the medium near the QD, which is detrimental to in-plane device integration. In this study, we apply a nondestructive luminescence picking method termed as nanoscale focus pinspot (NFP) using helium ion microscopy to reduce the luminous QD density while retaining the surrounding medium. Given that the NFP can precisely manipulate the luminescence at nanoscale resolution, a photonic device can be deterministically fabricated on the target QD matched from both spatial and spectral points of view. After applying the NFP, we extract only a single QD emission out of the high-density ensemble QD emission. Moreover, the photonic structure of a circular Bragg reflector is deterministically integrated with the selected QD, and the extraction efficiency of the QD emission has been improved 27 times. Furthermore, this technique does not destroy the medium and only controls the luminescence. Hence, it is highly applicable to various photonic structures, including photonic waveguides or photonic crystal cavities regardless of their materials.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure

Effect of few-walled carbon nanotube crystallinity on electron field emission property

We discuss the influence of few-walled carbon nanotubes (FWCNTs) treated with nitric acid and/or sulfuric acid on field emission characteristics. FWCNTs/tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) thin film field emitters were fabricated by a spray method using FWCNTs/TEOS sol one-component solution onto indium tin oxide (ITO) glass. After thermal curing, they were found tightly adhered to the ITO glass, and after an activation process by a taping method, numerous FWCNTs were aligned preferentially in the vertical direction. Pristine FWCNT/ TEOS-based field emitters revealed higher current density, lower turn-on field, and a higher field enhancement factor than the oxidized FWCNTs-based field emitters. However, the unstable dispersion of pristine FWCNT in TEOS/N,N-dimethylformamide solution was not applicable to the field emitter fabrication using a spray method. Although the field emitter of nitric acid-treated FWCNT showed slightly lower field emission characteristics, this could be improved by the introduction of metal nanoparticles or resistive layer coating. Thus, we can conclude that our spray method using nitric acid-treated FWCNT could be useful for fabricating a field emitter and offers several advantages compared to previously reported techniques such as chemical vapor deposition and screen printing.ope

PURPOSETo examine the effectiveness and safety of two embolic agents, an ethanol–lipiodol emulsion and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) particles, for selective arterial embolization (SAE) of renal angiomyolipoma (AML).METHODSRetrospectively, we reviewed the medical records and imaging data of renal AML patients who received SAE in our hospitals between July 2007 and January 2018. Among those eligible for analysis were patients with complete medical information, preoperative and postoperative contrast-enhanced computed tomography scans, and follow-up data. An ethanol–lipiodol emulsion was used to embolize 15 AMLs, and PVA particles were used to embolize 16 AMLs. We compared the tumor responses and adverse events between the two embolization-agent groups.RESULTSAfter embolization, no significant differences were observed in the shrinkage rates: 34.2% ± 3.4% for the ethanol–lipiodol emulsion group and 26.3% ± 3.0% for the PVA particles group (P = 0.090). Minor post-embolization complications were also similar between the groups, and there were no severe adverse events. The length of hospital stay after SAE was 2.5 ± 0.5 days for the ethanol–lipiodol emulsion group and 1.9 ± 0.5 days for the PVA particles group and was not significantly different (P = 0.425).CONCLUSIONThe results showed that SAE with ethanol–lipiodol emulsion or PVA particles was safe and efficient in decreasing tumor size and controlling renal AML hemorrhage

Background: After surgery for degenerative spinal disease by the anterior approach, the degree of soft tissue swelling can be assessed simply using plain radiographs. However, there are little studies according to the surgical methods or extent of surgery, and no study had addressed the clinical meaning of swelling determined by plain radiography. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical significance of prevertebral soft tissue swelling (PSTS) after anterior cervical fusion with plate fixation for the treatment of degenerative cervical spinal disorders. Methods: One hundred and thirty-five patients that underwent anterior cervical fusion with plate augmentation for degenerative cervical spondylosis were included in this study. PSTS differences were analyzed with respect to numbers of fusion segments and location of fusion. Cases were divided into two groups based on the amount of PSTS, and incidences of dyspnea, dysphagia, dysphonia were evaluated. Results: PSTS increments were significantly greater in patients that had undergone multi-level or high-level fusion. Complications of dyspnea, dysphagia and dysphonia were found more frequently in patients with marked PSTS group. Conclusions: Increments of PSTS after anterior cervical fusion for degenerative spinal disorders are greater and incidences of complications are higher in patients that undergo multi-level or high-level fusion. Thus, measurement of PSTS using consecutive cervical lateral radiographs after anterior cervical surgery is clinically meaningful procedure
