Ideal Gases in Time-Dependent Traps
We investigate theoretically the properties of an ideal trapped gas in a
time-dependent harmonic potential. Using a scaling formalism, we are able to
present simple analytical results for two important classes of experiments:
free expansion of the gas upon release of the trap; and the response of the gas
to a harmonic modulation of the trapping potential is investigated. We present

Anomalous rotational properties of Bose-Einstein condensates in asymmetric traps
We study the rotational properties of a Bose-Einstein condensate confined in
a rotating harmonic trap for different trap anisotropies. Using simple
arguments, we derive expressions for the velocity field of the quantum fluid
for condensates with or without vortices. While the condensed gas describes
open spiraling trajectories, on the frame of reference of the rotating trap the
motion of the fluid is against the trap rotation. We also find explicit
formulae for the angular momentum and a linear and Thomas-Fermi solutions for
the state without vortices. In these two limits we also find an analytic
relation between the shape of the cloud and the rotation speed. The predictions
are supported by numerical simulations of the mean field Gross-Pitaevskii

Obesity, but not hypohydration, mediates changes in mental task load during passive heating in females
Background The independent effects of hypohydration and hyperthermia on cognition and mood is unclear since the two stresses often confound each other. Further, it is unknown if obese individuals have the same impairments during hyperthermia and hypohydration that is often observed in non-obese individuals. Methods The current study was designed to assess the independent and combined effects of mild hypohydration and hyperthermia on cognition, mood, and mental task load in obese and non-obese females. Twenty-one healthy females participated in two passive heating trials, wherein they were either euhydrated or hypohydrated prior to and throughout passive heating. Cognition (ImPACT), mental task load (NASA-TLX), and mood (Brunel Mood Scale; BRUMS) were measured before and after a 1.0 °C increase in core temperature (TC). Results After a 1.0 °C TC elevation, hypohydration resulted in greater (p 0.05). Hyperthermia, regardless of hydration status, impaired (∼5 A.U) measures of memory-based cognition (verbal and visual memory), and increased mental task load, while worsening mood (p 0.05). Conclusion These data indicate that hyperthermia independently impairs memory-based aspects of cognitive performance, mental task load, and leads to a negative mood state. Mild hypohydration did not exacerbate the effects of hyperthermia. However, obese individuals had increased mental task load during hyperthermia
Vortices in superfluid trapped Fermi gases at zero temperature
We discuss various aspects of the vortex state of a dilute superfluid atomic
Fermi gas at T=0. The energy of the vortex in a trapped gas is calculated and
we provide an expression for the thermodynamic critical rotation frequency of
the trap for its formation. Furthermore, we propose a method to detect the
presence of a vortex by calculating the effect of its associated velocity field
on the collective mode spectrum of the gas
Dark soliton states of Bose-Einstein condensates in anisotropic traps
Dark soliton states of Bose-Einstein condensates in harmonic traps are
studied both analytically and computationally by the direct solution of the
Gross-Pitaevskii equation in three dimensions. The ground and self-consistent
excited states are found numerically by relaxation in imaginary time. The
energy of a stationary soliton in a harmonic trap is shown to be independent of
density and geometry for large numbers of atoms. Large amplitude field
modulation at a frequency resonant with the energy of a dark soliton is found
to give rise to a state with multiple vortices. The Bogoliubov excitation
spectrum of the soliton state contains complex frequencies, which disappear for
sufficiently small numbers of atoms or large transverse confinement. The
relationship between these complex modes and the snake instability is

Infrastructure protection in the Dutch financial sector
This paper presents a case study of critical infrastructure protection in the Dutch financial sector. The organizational structures are examined to discern the roles and functions that facilitate public-private cooperation. An assessment of the organizational structures is provided along with a description of how key organizations are identified. Finally, a basic model is presented that can be used by other sectors as a template for determining the appropriate organizational structures for critical infrastructure protection
