Replication of mixing achieved in large co-rotating screw extruder using a novel laboratory 10-100g minimixer
YesWhen compounding polymers with additives to develop materials at specifications (colouring plastics is the simplest example), the difficulties is in getting the formulation right the first time. Also, when developing completely new materials such as in nanotechnology applications, there is a need to do the initial trials safely and with as small quantities as possible to enable a wide range of experimentation. Wiith traditional applications, often the initial compounding formulation is done using small single or twin screw extruders but with machines that have a fair output to instruct the large scale operation. This step is costly in material wastage and time but more importantly it often does not provide the right formulation which in turn results in bigger wastage cost at the industrial scale before the right formulation is eventually obtained. With the very new material formulations, any reduction in cost of development is always essential. With these aims in mind, we have developed a new minimixer capable of handling tiny quantities of order 10-100g but the minimixer is capable of reproducing the very high mixing conditions experienced in large machines. This invention provides a new opportunity to develop new products quickly, safely and cheaply. The application is not restricted to polymers and can be extended to other soft materials. It has also other spin-offs as a research tool for studying mixing and developing new, more efficient, mixing flows. In this paper we explain the principle of operation we have engineered to produce such intense mixing. Basically, the device is based on combining two opposing flows: a single screw extruder circulation flow with a twin screw extruder mixing flow. The mixing is carried out as a batch but on its completion, the single screw extruder flow is reversed and becomes co-current with the twin extruder flow to enable the discharging of the batch through a die. In the paper we present mixing data obtained with various polymer-additive combinations tested in the minimixer under various conditions of screw speeds, mixing times and temperatures and at the larger scale to underpin the operation of this novel mixer. The quality of mixing of the extrudate was measured using a variety of methods depending on applications: using image analysis of microtome sections of the extrudate or of blown film samples produced from the formulations or measuring electrical properties
Director Field Model of the Primary Visual Cortex for Contour Detection
We aim to build the simplest possible model capable of detecting long, noisy
contours in a cluttered visual scene. For this, we model the neural dynamics in
the primate primary visual cortex in terms of a continuous director field that
describes the average rate and the average orientational preference of active
neurons at a particular point in the cortex. We then use a linear-nonlinear
dynamical model with long range connectivity patterns to enforce long-range
statistical context present in the analyzed images. The resulting model has
substantially fewer degrees of freedom than traditional models, and yet it can
distinguish large contiguous objects from the background clutter by suppressing
the clutter and by filling-in occluded elements of object contours. This
results in high-precision, high-recall detection of large objects in cluttered
scenes. Parenthetically, our model has a direct correspondence with the Landau
- de Gennes theory of nematic liquid crystal in two dimensions.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figure
Normal incidence standing wave analysis of the Cu(1 1 1)- (â3Ăâ3)R 30°-Mn structure: evidence for stacking faults or large-scale alloying?
The interaction of Mn with the Cu(1 1 1) surface has been investigated using the normal incidence X-ray standing
wave (NIXSW) method. Analysis of the NIXSW was complicated by the apparent large shift in position of many layers
of the Cu atoms relative to their expected bulk positions indicated by a change in the coherent position. Quantitative
analysis of the NIXSW shows that there are at least two but possibly many sites for each element in the altered layer
Sclerites and possible mouthparts of Wiwaxia from the temperate palaeolatitudes of Colombia, South America
The problematic mollusc Wiwaxia is perhaps the most widely distributed non-mineralized Cambrian metazoan, but has only been reported from palaeotropical latitudes. Here, we describe mid-Cambrian (Drumian, c. 504 Ma) sclerites and possible tooth arrays from the northern Llanos Basin, Colombia, recovered from drilled ditch cuttings by palynological processing â demonstrating that pristine material and low-manipulation processing are not essential to the recovery of Small Carbonaceous Fossils. This, the first report of Wiwaxia from South America, substantially expands Wiwaxia's geographic range into the high palaeolatitudes
New austral records of massive swarming by a chloropid fly, Chloromerus striatifrons (Diptera: Chloropidae)
Mass aggregations, including aerial swarms, of a yellow swarming chloropid fly are reported from Australia. The species, Chloromerus striatifrons (Becker), is endemic to south-eastern Australia and has been reported swarming only once previously, 40 years ago
Photoelectron spectroscopy of manganese-based Heusler alloys
Ultraviolet-photoemission spectroscopy has been employed to investigate the valence-band electronic structures of the magnetic alloys Co2MnSn, Cu2MnAl, and Pd2MnSn.The valence band of Co2MnSn extends to approximately 5 eV below the Fermi level with a high density of states immediately below the Fermi edge. Cu2MnAl and Pd2MnSn have valence-band widths of 6 and 7 eV, respectively, with the highest density of states lying some 3 eV below the Fermi level in each case. Photoemission measurements in the region of the Mn 3p threshold indicate that Mn 3d character extends across the full width of the valence band for all three alloys. For Pd2MnSn, additional photoemission measurements in the region of the Pd 4d Cooper minimum confirm this conclusion. Modulations in photocurrent resulting from Mn 3p-to-3d resonances across the valence band of Co2MnSn are most intense towards the bottom of the band. This is discussed in terms of possible variations in initial-state hybridization. The experimental photoemission spectra are compared with calculated spectra derived from theoretical band structures. Although there are some differences in shape, the bandwidths of the calculated spectra agree very well with the experimental results

Hydrothermal Chimney Distribution on the Endeavour Segment, Juan de Fuca Ridge
The Endeavour Segment of the Juan de Fuca Ridge is well known for its abundance of hydrothermal vents and chimneys. Oneâmeter scale multibeam mapping data collected by an autonomous undersea vehicle revealed 572 chimneys along the central 14 km of the segment, although only 47 are named and known to be active. Hydrothermal deposits are restricted to the axial graben and the nearârims of the graben above a seismically mapped axial magma lens. The sparse eruptive activity on the segment during the last 4,300 years has not buried inactive chimneys, as occurs at more magmatically robust midâocean ridges
