If Johnny Twoshoes jumps off the Empire State Building, then so will everyone else. That seemed to be the theme Friday when university students made Mr. Corduroy an instant millionaire on Gay Jeans Day

Stochastic optimization of hydroelectric dam operations on the Biobio River in Chile
Thesis (M. Eng.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering, 2009.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 30-33).Growing electricity demand in Chile has prompted the proposal of new hydropower projects. In addition to evaluating new projects to satisfy demand, a holistic assessment of alternatives as well as potential gains from improved utilization of current hydropower resources should be completed. This study aims to quantify potential gains from optimizing reservoir operations through a case study of the 2-dam system, consisting of the Pangue and Ralco dams, on the Biobio River. This analysis includes results from an optimization model built in GAMS (General Algebraic Modeling System) and two simulations built in MATLAB by the author to assess the efficacy of various operational schemes.by Kristen M. Jonathan Burrall to Susan Niemcewicz, July 14, 1800
Jonathan Burrall wrote from New York, New York to Susan U. Niemcewicz in Elizabethtown, New Jersey. Burrall informed Susan that he had received her Bank Book from Mr. Ghan and all entries up to the present date were made. Mr. Ghan would return the Bank Book to her. Observed that a Power of Attorney was not necessary to transfer stocks from the Books of the Treasury to those of the Commissioner of Loans in the State of New York, but the Certificates needed to be sent to the Register of the Treasury, with Susan’s request that they be transferred to the Books of the Commissioner of Loans in New York. However, it was necessary to send a Power of Attorney to the Cashier of the Bank of the United States to receive the interest up to June 30, as the new certificate for placing it in New York will have interest from July 1. Advised that Mr. Niemcewicz join in the power to prevent the necessity of a certificate respecting their marriage contract. Burrall and his wife joined in congratulating Susan on her marriage.

Precedents, parliaments, and foreign policy:Historical analogy in the House of Commons vote on Syria
This analysis investigates the role of historical analogies in the influence that parliaments have in foreign policy. Our empirical focus is the UK Parliament’s unusual opposition to the Prime Minister on UK involvement in Syria in 2013. The vote challenges many conventional expectations about the role of parliament in security affairs. Important in this vote were lessons learned and strategically used from UK participation in the intervention of Iraq in 2003. This argument is developed theoretically based on research on historical analogies: parliaments, ‘learn’ (primarily negative) lessons about past foreign policy events which guide parliamentary preferences and procedures and can enhance parliaments’ role in subsequent foreign policy. The article contributes to research on analogies by extending the logic to lessons on process. This use of precedents can offer more structurally oriented perspectives that translate critical junctures into reforms in procedures and policy-making practices.</p
