    Finite momentum condensation in a pumped microcavity

    We calculate the absorption spectra of a semiconductor microcavity into which a non-equilibrium exciton population has been pumped. We predict strong peaks in the spectrum corresponding to collective modes analogous to the Cooper modes in superconductors and fermionic atomic gases. These modes can become unstable, leading to the formation of off-equilibrium quantum condensates. We calculate a phase diagram for condensation, and show that the dominant instabilities can be at a finite momentum. Thus we predict the formation of inhomogeneous condensates, similar to Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov states.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, updated to accepted versio

    Symmetry dependence of phonon lineshapes in superconductors with anisotropic gaps

    The temperature dependence below TcT_{c} of the lineshape of optical phonons of different symmetry as seen in Raman scattering is investigated for superconductors with anisotropic energy gaps. It is shown that the symmetry of the electron-phonon vertex produces non-trivial couplings to an anisotropic energy gap which leads to unique changes in the phonon lineshape for phonons of different symmetry. The phonon lineshape is calculated in detail for B1gB_{1g} and A1gA_{1g} phonons in a superconductor with dx2−y2d_{x^{2}-y^{2}} pairing symmetry. The role of satellite peaks generated by the electron-phonon coupling are also addressed. The theory accounts for the substantial phonon narrowing of the B1gB_{1g} phonon, while narrowing of the A1gA_{1g} phonon which is indistinguishable from the normal state is shown, in agreement with recent measurements on BSCCO.Comment: 15 pages (3 Figures available upon request), Revtex, 1

    On equivariant characteristic ideals of real classes

    Let pp be an odd prime, F/QF/{\Bbb Q} an abelian totally real number field, F∞/FF_\infty/F its cyclotomic Zp{\Bbb Z}_p-extension, G∞=Gal(F∞/Q),G_\infty = Gal (F_\infty / {\Bbb Q}), A=Zp[[G∞]].{\Bbb A} = {\Bbb Z}_p [[G_\infty]]. We give an explicit description of the equivariant characteristic ideal of HIw2(F∞,Zp(m))H^2_{Iw} (F_\infty, {\Bbb Z}_p(m)) over A{\Bbb A} for all odd m∈Zm \in {\Bbb Z} by applying M. Witte's formulation of an equivariant main conjecture (or "limit theorem") due to Burns and Greither. This could shed some light on Greenberg's conjecture on the vanishing of the λ\lambda-invariant of $F_\infty/F.

    Preparing the foundations for video-based, practice-placement support: establishing the role from a students’ perspective

    Currently, many placement-based health programme students within the UK are supported through face-to-face visits from university staff. Whilst cited in literature as being of value, the face-to-face nature of this contact is not supported. Alternatives including video-based communications methods offer the potential for cost effective, environmentally responsible support. However, in order to establish the fitness for purpose of alternative approaches, the content and purpose of current support needs to be understood. This project aimed to investigate student perceptions of the ideal content and purpose of clinical support visits, and alternatives to the current face-to-face approach. Fifty-six Physiotherapy undergraduate students responded to questionnaires with a further nine participating in a follow-up focus group. Participants emphasised the value of the visit in guiding learning, ensuring progression and resolving arising issues, and highlighted concerns over alternative approaches. Focus group participants discussed the importance of personal and professional confidence in directing requirements for support, and went on to propose a menu of options for methods of communication.Whilst limited in some applications, video technologies may be one of the options. Overall, however, this project supports the need for consideration of individualised learning journeys within curriculum planning

    Determining the phonon DOS from specific heat measurements via maximum entropy methods

    The maximum entropy and reverse Monte-Carlo methods are applied to the computation of the phonon density of states (DOS) from heat capacity data. The approach is introduced and the formalism is described. Simulated data is used to test the method, and its sensitivity to noise. Heat capacity measurements from diamond are used to demonstrate the use of the method with experimental data. Comparison between maximum entropy and reverse Monte-Carlo results shows the form of the entropy used here is correct, and that results are stable and reliable. Major features of the DOS are picked out, and acoustic and optical phonons can be treated with the same approach. The treatment set out in this paper provides a cost-effective and reliable method for studies of the phonon properties of materials.Comment: Reprint to improve access. 10 pages, 6 figure
