Striking a balance between culture and fun: 'Quality' meets hitman genre in 'In Bruges'
This is an Author's Accepted Manuscript of an article published in New Review of Film and Television Studies, 9(2), 132 - 151, 2011, copyright Taylor & Francis, available online at: http://www.tandfonline.com/10.1080/17400309.2011.556934.This paper gives an analysis of In Bruges (2008) that situates the film as a hybrid product offering a mixture of signifiers of cinematic âqualityâ and âlowerâ genre ingredients. This paper also considers the extent to which In Bruges offers a combination of tonal registers in which irony and detachment, as markers of distinction, are blended with a more mainstream-oriented appeal to emotional engagement on the part of the viewer, and considers how this might be related to the broader social and industrial contexts in which it appeared
Locking plate fixation with and without inferomedial screws for proximal humeral fractures: a biomechanical study.
PURPOSE. To compare the efficacy of locking plate fixation with and without inferomedial screws in maintaining the reduction of a proximal humeral fracture. METHODS. 22 synthetic humerus models were used. A standardised 3-part proximal humeral fracture with a 4-mm wedge segment was created and fixed with a locking plate and screws with (n=11) and without (n=11) inferomedial screws. The intrafragmentary motion of the construct at 250, 500, 750, and 1000 cycles of 532 N loading, and the load to failure of the 2 groups were compared. RESULTS. Locking plate fixation with inferomedial screws reduced the mean intrafragmentary motion in all cycles (

Planetary defence: a duty for world defenders
This poster is an advocacy document. We believe that it is now time for an international coalition of military/industrial/atomic agencies to take on the tasks of designing, building and maintaining in readiness active defenses against asteroids and comets threatening to impact Earth.
We visualize a policy environment where a relatively small portion of existing defense resources is redirected to Planetary Defense, with already-established ground and space PD efforts allocated increased backing and increased responsibility in supporting roles.
A main part of the needed policy structure is already in place. An International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN) and a Space Mission Planning Advisory Group (SMPAG) are functioning under auspices of the UN Committee on Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS). In the near term, intercept action will be launched upon validation of an impact threat by IAWN and SMPAG. The activity should start with conventional technology while awaiting needed international policy changes allowing use of nuclear energy, essential in the case of less-likely but more dangerous threats. An important side benefit of the proposed collaborative military involvement would be increased knowledge of the risk and increased trust among nations
