The present paper aims to explain how dynamic capabilities contribute to business model innovation in established organizations. It draws on a qualitative research design based on a single case study of an established multinational company operating in the construction materials industry (production and sale), which developed a service solution in lightweight façades. In addition to explaining how the sub-dimensions of dynamic capabilities contributed to the success/failure of the new business model, from its idealization and structuring to its execution, the paper shows which dynamic capabilities were present at the beginning and which ones were developed during the innovation. The study uncovers four important findings: 1) dynamic capabilities should be present in top leadership for the development of business model innovation; 2) the occurrence of dynamic capabilities takes place in a non-sequential and non-linear fashion; 3) dynamic capabilities contribute to the creation of competitive advantages in relatively stable environments; and 4) existing resources are important catalysts of results for business model innovation in established organization. The paper hence highlights the role of top leadership in business model innovation, as well as identifies the contribution of dynamic capabilities in relatively stable markets, alongside the catalyzing role of available resources in established organizations.
The Value of IT: Explaining the Strategic Role of Information Systems for Fast Growing SMES
This article investigates fast growing and successful small and medium enterprises (SMEs). We focus particularly on the role and relevance of information systems (IS) skills and knowledge for their success. Although many theories account for the relationship between IS and organizational performance, they target mostly the context of large corporations, thus overlooking the special conditions that fast growing SMEs face. We specifically investigate fast growing SMEs for the following reasons: these companies are subject to constant organizational change due to their continuous growth and thus rely critically on having the right IS setup and strategy, while at the same time they are often too small and specialized for out-of-the-box enterprise IS solutions. Based on an interpretive multiple-case study design, we present three generic, archetypal IS strategies, ranging from full identification with and capitalization on IS to complete cost-based outsourcing of all IS related services. We analyze the inherent chances and risks associated with each of these strategies and present anecdotal evidence from the case companies to illustrate our findings
Open Innovation in Brazil: Exploring Opportunities and Challenges
Background: While open innovation has been increasingly adopted in developed countries, firms from emerging markets such as Brazil markedly fall behind this trend. Our understanding of the reasons behind this phenomenon remains limited, since most research focuses on the industrialized world. Objective: The objective of this paper is to inspire the academic community to investigate the issue of why companies from emerging economies such as Brazil have limited open innovation strategies, when they need to draw on external partners as to overcome the institutional, resource and capability constraints they are subject to.Method: We review current research on open innovation in general and especially in the Brazilian setting to develop a framework for studying this phenomenon and to suggest future research directions. Results: We argue that latecomer firms in emerging economies need to actively use open innovation more than ever, as to overcome internal rigidities and spur the innovative resources and capabilities required for the digital transformation and for addressing grand societal challenges. We contend that the Brazilian setting is a relevant empirical context to study, giving the potential to uncover unique mechanisms and theoretical relations by asking (and possibly answering) novel research questions. Conclusions: Building on a conceptual framework that links various implementation levels of open innovation, we identify themes that are either less well researched or contested and thereby suggest challenges and opportunities for future research
Purpose of the study: to understand how Lean Startup experimentation occurs in established companies through the design of experimental spaces and the role of middle management.
Methodology: qualitative methodology, with a single case study in a branch of an established multinational company. The semi-structured interview script focused on creating experimental spaces and the role of middle management, based on the flow of activities, practices and articulated organizational actors.
Originality/relevance: This study advances understanding of how the design of experimental spaces and temporary experimental settings, where actors from the field come together and experiment with alternative models of action, stimulate innovation and help introduce Lean Startup in established companies.
Main results: From the flow of activities, practices and organizational actors articulated by the middle management, the creation of experimental spaces was described as facilitators of the implementation of the model.
Theoretical/methodological contributions: the work contributes to the literature on the topic in a research gap identified in recent works, in which researchers state that there is a growing body of research on agile processes in Startups, but little has focused on understanding how this process is conducted in companies established and used as a tool to support innovation and corporate ventures.
Evidências do Brasil
Interorganisational patterns of collaboration have long been recognised in the literature for their potential to promote learning and innovative capabilities, in particular those encompassing university and industry interactions. Yet they are scarcely found in underdeveloped Innovation Systems such as the Brazilian one and little is known about why or how they are established. Drawing upon a comparative case study, this paper investigates in which context technological cooperation between university and industry emerges in Brazil. The findings indicate that the formation of technological cooperation is a co-evolutionary process, which emergences from the practice of knowledge sharing with external partners, as well from the connecting effort of ‘linked scientists’
THE IMPENDING EMERGENCE OF (SOCIAL NETWORK) PAYMENTS : A study of the current situation of the mobile payments industry in Sweden and the challenges within the ecosystem.
While open innovation has been increasingly adopted in developed countries, firms from emerging markets such as Brazil markedly fall behind this trend. Our understanding of the reasons behind this phenomenon remains nevertheless limited, since most research focuses on the industrialized world. In this paper, we aim to inspire the academic community to investigate the issue of why companies from emerging economies such as Brazil have limited open innovation strategies, when they need to draw on external partners as to overcome the institutional, resource and capability constraints they are subject to. We build on the argument that latecomer firms in emerging economies need to actively use open innovation more than ever, as to overcome internal rigidities and spur the innovative resources and capabilities required for the digital transformation and for addressing grand societal challenges. In reviewing current research on openness and especially in the Brazilian setting, we contend that it is a relevant empirical context to study, giving the potential to uncover unique mechanisms and theoretical relations by asking (and possibly answering) novel research questions. Building on a conceptual framework that links various implementation levels of open innovation, we identify themes that are either less well researched or contested and thereby suggest challenges and opportunities for future research

Not invented here: how institutionalized socialization practices affect the formation of negative attitudes toward external knowledge
This article posits that practices to increase cohesiveness among employees might also contribute to a biased perception of internally generated knowledge and therefore to a greater reluctance to adopt external knowledge, enhancing the so-called not-invented-here (NIH) syndrome
