Implementing the convention on biological diversity in Thailand
Since the Convention on Biological
Diversity was adopted at the
UNCED meeting in 1992, Thailand
has continuously been demonstrating
her willingful commitment toward the
implementation of the Convention itself.
The Office of Environmental Policy and
Planning and other biodiversity related
institutions have made adjustment to the
existing programs and initiated additional
projects in accordance to initiatives and
objectives of the Convention. These
projects and programs, ranging from
formulation of policy frameworks such
as national policies, measures and plans
for conservation and sustainable use of
biodiversity, assisting taxonomic works
through the publication of a number of
taxonomic lists of species to enhancement
of information system using hypermedia
technology of ELADA 21 , have, at certain
extent, prepared Thailand to meet the
country's commitment to the Convention.
Most importantly, to fully achieve the absolute
initiatives of the Convention in the
future, those activities have also identified
the problems and difficulties associated
with effective conservation and management
of biodiversity in the country. These
problems including the lack of human
resources on taxonomic researches, must
be tackled promptly
