Lichenometry dating of coseismic changes to a New Zealand landslide complex
Lichenometry is a surface-exposure-dating procedure that complements traditional trench-and-date stratigraphic
studies of earthquakes. Lichens on the surficial blocks of a slump in the Seaward Kaikoura Range, South Island,
New Zealand provide precise, accurate (± 2 years) dating of 20 post-landslide rockfall events. The coseismic
character of these rockfall events is apparent when ages of lichen-size peaks are compared with dates of historical
earthquakes. Most local prehistoric lichen-size peaks are synchronous with peaks at other lichenometry
sites in a 20 000 km2 region. Lichenometry may be the best paleoseismic tool for describing the extent and intensity
of seismic shaking caused by prehistoric earthquakes, and for dating earthquakes generated by concealed
thrust faults and subduction fault zones
Investigation of phonon behavior in Pr2NiMnO6 by micro-Raman spectroscopy
The temperature dependence of phonon excitations and the presence of spin
phonon coupling in polycrystalline Pr2NiMnO6 samples were studied using
micro-Raman spectroscopy and magnetometry. Magnetic properties show a single
ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic transition at 228 K and a saturation
magnetization close to 4.95 \muB/f.u.. Three distinct Raman modes at 657, 642,
and 511 cm-1 are observed. The phonon excitations show a clear hardening due to
anharmonicity from 300 K down to 10 K. Further, temperature dependence of the
657 cm-1 mode shows only a small softening. This reflects the presence of a
relatively weak spin-phonon coupling in Pr2NiMnO6 contrary to other double

Evolutionary bi-stability in pathogen transmission mode
Many pathogens transmit to new hosts by both infection (horizontal transmission) and transfer to the
infected host's offspring (vertical transmission). These two transmission modes require speciÂźc adap-
tations of the pathogen that can be mutually exclusive, resulting in a trade-off between horizontal and
vertical transmission. We show that in mathematical models such trade-offs can lead to the simultaneous
existence of two evolutionary stable states (evolutionary bi-stability) of allocation of resources to the two
modes of transmission. We also show that jumping between evolutionary stable states can be induced by
gradual environmental changes. Using quantitative PCR-based estimates of abundance in seed and vege-
tative parts, we show that the pathogen of wheat, Phaeosphaeria nodorum, has jumped between two
distinct states of transmission mode twice in the past 160 years, which, based on published evidence,
we interpret as adaptation to environmental change. The Âźnding of evolutionary bi-stability has impli-
cations for human, animal and other plant diseases. An ill-judged change in a disease control
programme could cause the pathogen to evolve a new, and possibly more damaging, combination of
transmission modes. Similarly, environmental changes can shift the balance between transmission
modes, with adverse effects on human, animal and plant health
Interviewing suspects: examining the association between skills, questioning, evidence disclosure, and interview outcomes
The interviewing of suspects is an important element in the investigation of crime. However, studies concerning actual performance of investigators when undertaking such interviews remain sparse. Nevertheless, in England and Wales, since the introduction of a prescribed framework over 20 years ago, field studies have generally shown an improvement in interviewing performance, notwithstanding ongoing concerns largely relating to the more demanding aspects (such as building/maintaining rapport, intermittent summarising and the logical development of topics). Using a sample of 70 real-life interviews, the present study examined questioning and various evidence disclosure strategies (which have also been found demanding), examining their relationships between interview skills and interview outcomes. It was found that when evidence was disclosed gradually (but revealed later), interviews were generally both more skilled and involved the gaining of comprehensive accounts, whereas when evidence was disclosed either early or very late, interviews were found to be both less skilled and less likely to involve this outcome. These findings contribute towards an increased research base for the prescribed framework

A model-based assessment of the effects of projected climate change on the water resources of Jordan
This paper is concerned with the quantification of the likely effect of anthropogenic climate change on the water resources of Jordan by the end of the twenty-first century. Specifically, a suite of hydrological models are used in conjunction with modelled outcomes from a regional climate model, HadRM3, and a weather generator to determine how future flows in the upper River Jordan and in the Wadi Faynan may change. The results indicate that groundwater will play an important role in the water security of the country as irrigation demands increase. Given future projections of reduced winter rainfall and increased near-surface air temperatures, the already low groundwater recharge will decrease further. Interestingly, the modelled discharge at the Wadi Faynan indicates that extreme flood flows will increase in magnitude, despite a decrease in the mean annual rainfall. Simulations projected no increase in flood magnitude in the upper River Jordan. Discussion focuses on the utility of the modelling framework, the problems of making quantitative forecasts and the implications of reduced water availability in Jordan
A lesson on interrogations from detainees: Predicting self-reported confessions and cooperation
The ability to predict confessions and cooperation from the elements of an interrogation was examined. Incarcerated men (N = 100) completed a 50-item questionnaire about their most recent police interrogation, and regression analyses were performed on self-reported decisions to confess and cooperate. Results showed that the likelihood of an interrogation resulting in a confession was greatest when evidence strength and score on a humanitarian interviewing scale were high, and when the detainee had few previous convictions or did not seek legal advice. We also found that the level of cooperation was greatest when the humanitarian interviewing score was high, and when previous convictions were low. The implications of the findings for interrogation practices are discussed
The changing patterns of group politics in Britain
Two interpretations of ways in which group politics in Britain have presented challenges to democracy are reviewed: neo-corporatism or pluralistic stagnation and the rise of single issue interest groups. The disappearance of the first paradigm created a political space for the second to emerge. A three-phase model of group activity is developed: a phase centred around production interests, followed by the development of broadly based 'other regarding' groups, succeeded by fragmented, inner directed groups focusing on particular interests. Explanations of the decay of corporatism are reviewed. Single issue group activity has increased as party membership has declined and is facilitated by changes in traditional media and the development of the internet. Such groups can overload the policy-making process and frustrate depoliticisation. Debates about the constitution and governance have largely ignored these issues and there is need for a debate
A new Holocene record of geomagnetic secular variation from Windermere, UK
Paleomagnetic
secular
variation
(PSV)
records
serve
as
valuable
independent
stratigraphic
correlation
and
dating
tools
for
marine
and
terrestrial
sediment
sequences,
and
enhance
knowledge
of
geomagnetic
field
dynamics.
We
present
a
new
radiocarbon-dated
record
(WINPSV-12K)
of
Holocene
geomagnetic
secular
variation
from
Windermere,
updating
the
existing
1981
UK
master
PSV
curve.
Our
analyses
used
continuous
U-channel
samples
taken
from
the
center
of
four
sediment
cores
retrieved
from
Windermere
in
2012.
The
natural
remanent
magnetization
(NRM)
of
each
U-channel
was
measured
before
and
after
stepwise
alternating
field
(AF)
demagnetization
on
a
superconducting
rock
magnetometer
at
intervals
of
0.5-cm
or
1-cm.
The
NRM
data
reveal
a
stable
and
well-defined
primary
magnetization.
Component
declinations
and
inclinations
estimated
using
Principal
Component
Analysis
(PCA)
of
NRM
data
from
the
four
Windermere
cores
correlate
well
on
their
independent
radiocarbon
age
models.
The
four
records
were
stacked
using
a
sliding
window
bootstrap
method,
resulting
in
a
composite
Holocene
PSV
record
(WINPSV-12K).
On
millennial
timescales
WINPSV-12K
correlates
well
with
other
records
from
Western
Europe
and
the
northern
North
Atlantic
to
a
resolution
of
âŒ
1
kyr,
given
age
uncertainties
and
spatial
variability
between
records.
WINPSV-12K
also
compares
well
to
the
CALS10k.2
and
pfm9k.1a
model
predictions
for
Windermere.
Key
regionally-significant
PSV
inclination
features
of
WINPSV-12K
which
correlate
with
other
North
Atlantic
records
include
peaks
at
5â6,
8.5,
and
10 cal ka BP,
and
a
trough
at
7calkaBP.
Key
PSV
declination
features

the
eastward
swing
from
5.5â2.3 cal ka BP
followed

major
westward
excursion
at

WINPSV-12K
provides
a
regionally-important
new
PSV
reference
curve
whose
prominent
features
may
serve
as
stratigraphic
markers
for
North
Atlantic
paleo-records
Drivers of success in implementing sustainable tourism policies in urban areas
The existing literature in the field of sustainable tourism highlights a number of barriers that impede the implementation of policies in this area. Yet, not many studies have so far considered the factors that would contribute to putting this concept into practice, and few address the case of urban areas. The concept of sustainability has only received limited attention in urban tourism research, even though large cities are recognised as one of the most important tourist destinations that attract vast numbers of visitors. Adopting a case study approach, this paper discusses a number of drivers of success identified by policy-makers in London to contribute to the implementation of sustainable tourisms policies at the local level, and briefly looks at the relationship between these drivers and the constraints perceived by the respondents to hinder the implementation of such policies in practice. These findings may help policy-makers in other large cities to successfully develop and implement policies towards sustainable development of tourism in their area
A comprehensive assessment of the applicability of available and proposed offshore mooring and foundation technologies and design tools for array applications
PublishedThe function and type of mooring and/or foundation system are determined by a number of factors including: cost, site characteristics, expected environmental loading and environmental or legislative constraints. The design of the device and its mode of operation will also influence the decision making process. It is the role of DTOcean Work Package 4 to produce a decision making tool which has the capability to assess a range of technologies for the design and selection of mooring and foundation systems for marine renewable energy (MRE) device arrays. In this first deliverable report, criteria are introduced which can be used to appraise technologies and approaches relevant to MRE devices. Existing mooring and foundation technologies used in the offshore industry are summarised with examples given of MRE device deployments. A general overview of the design tools which are currently used for mooring and foundation design in the offshore and MRE industries is provided, along with a list of the capabilities of several commercially available software packages.European Commissionâs 7th Framework; Grant agreement number: 60859
