Word Order in Epigraphic Gǝ’ǝz

The paper offers the results of analysis of word order throughout the epigraphic corpus of Gǝʿǝz. This evidence is mostly in agreement with the data from Classical Gǝʿǝz and confirms that early Gǝʿǝz represents the classical Semitic type of a right-branching language: objects and prepositional phrases mostly follow the verbs, and relative clauses and genitive complements usually follow the head nouns. At the same time, some differences between the syntax of Classical Gǝʿǝz and Epigraphic Gǝʿǝz have been registered, notably in the behaviour of numerals.

“Behold, I have written it on parchment…” Two Early Amharic Poems from Ms. Ef. 10 (Koriander 2), St. Petersburg

The article deals with two short poems in Amharic from Ms. Ef. 10 kept in the Library of the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg. Amharic, a Semitic language of Ethiopia, came to function as the second written language of Ethiopian Empire in the course of the 19th century. Samples of Amharic texts prior to this period are scanty and worthy of special study. The poems in question can be dated to the period end of the 17th – beginning of the 18th century. The article provides the texts of the poems with translation and linguistic and philological commentary, accompanied by a short description of Ms. Ef. 10

Towards a Comprehensive Edition of the Arabic-Ethiopic Glossary of al-Malik al-Afḍal Part I: New Readings from the First Sheet

The paper presents the preliminary results of a thorough palaeographic and etymological analysis of the first sheet of the al-Malik al-Afḍal’s 14th century Arabic–Ethiopic Glossary, undertaken by the team of Russian scholars in the framework of a project on edition and publication of the whole Glossary. The results are compared with the identifications offered recently by Franz-Christoph Muth. For the 34 entries from the first sheet of the Glossary, whose identification in Muth’s publication is either missing altogether or not sufficiently convincing, new identifications are offered and discussed

In Aethiopica 16, the first part of new readings from the al-Malik al-Afḍal’s 14th-century Arabic–Ethiopic Glossary was published. The present paper offers the results of analysis of the second sheet of the Glossary and contains all identifications which differ from those offered by Franz-Christof Muth. For the 53 entries from the second sheet of the Glossary, whose identification in Muth’s publication is either missing altogether or not sufficiently convincing, new readings are offered and discussed
