How can we test seesaw experimentally?
The seesaw mechanism for the small neutrino mass has been a popular paradigm,
yet it has been believed that there is no way to test it experimentally. We
present a conceivable outcome from future experiments that would convince us of
the seesaw mechanism. It would involve a variety of data from LHC, ILC,
cosmology, underground, and low-energy flavor violation experiments to

Brain Localisation of Memory Chunks in Chessplayers
Chess experts store domain-specific representations in their long-term memory; due to the activation of such representations, they perform with high accuracy in tasks that require the maintenance of previously seen information. Chunk-based theories of expertise (chunking theory: Chase & Simon, 1973; template theory: Gobet & Simon, 1996) state that expertise is acquired mainly by the acquisition and storage in long-term memory of familiar chunks that allow quick recognition. We tested some predictions of these theories by using fMRI while chessplayers performed a recognition memory task. These theories predict that chessplayers access long-term memory chunks of domain-specific information, which are presumably stored in the temporal lobes. We also predicted that the recognition memory tasks would activate working memory areas in the frontal and parietal lobes. These predictions were supported by the data
Antiphase dynamics in a multimode semiconductor laser with optical injection
A detailed experimental study of antiphase dynamics in a two-mode
semiconductor laser with optical injection is presented. The device is a
specially designed Fabry-Perot laser that supports two primary modes with a THz
frequency spacing. Injection in one of the primary modes of the device leads to
a rich variety of single and two-mode dynamical scenarios, which are reproduced
with remarkable accuracy by a four dimensional rate equation model. Numerical
bifurcation analysis reveals the importance of torus bifurcations in mediating
transitions to antiphase dynamics and of saddle-node of limit cycle
bifurcations in switching of the dynamics between single and two-mode regimes.Comment: 7 pages, 9 figure

(BCS) were recorded on cows entering an Irish commercial slaughter facility between
September and November, 2005. Data pertaining to sire breed, age and carcass characteristics
were collected and subsequently collated for each cow. For analysis, cows
(n = 2163) were subdivided into three breed categories: dairy breed sired by Holstein/
Friesian (FR), sired by early-maturing beef breeds (EM) and sired by late-maturing
beef breeds (LM). The proportion of cows slaughtered at the desired (TARGET)
carcass standard (cold carcass weight ≥ 272 kg, carcass conformation class ≥ P+ and
carcass fat class ≥ 3) was low (on average 0.30), but did differ (P < 0.001) between the
dairy and beef breed categories (0.22, 0.47 and 0.53 for FR, EM and LM categories,
respectively). Regression procedures were used to develop equations to predict cold
carcass weight, carcass conformation score, carcass fat score and proportion in the
TARGET category from LW and BCS. Equations predicting cold carcass weight had
high R2 values for all breed categories (0.81, 0.85 and 0.79 for the FR, EM and LM,
respectively). Equations predicting carcass fatness had moderate R2 values for the beef
breed categories (0.65 and 0.59 for the EM and LM, respectively). Equations predicting

On the accretion mode of the intermediate polar V1025 Centauri
The long white-dwarf spin periods in the magnetic cataclysmic variables EX
Hya and V1025 Cen imply that if the systems possess accretion discs then they
cannot be in equilibrium. It has been suggested that instead they are discless
accretors in which the spin-up torques resulting from accretion are balanced by
the ejection of part of the accretion flow back towards the secondary. We
present phase-resolved spectroscopy of V1025 Cen aimed at deducing the nature
of the accretion flow, and compare this with simulations of a discless
accretor. We find that both the conventional disc-fed model and the
discless-accretor model have strengths and weaknesses, and that further work is

This is a study of the influence of socioeconomic factors on the state of health of older Canadians. Three years of panel data from the Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics are used to model the transition probabilities between good and poor health. Care is taken to avoid the problem of endogeneity of income in modelling its effects, and to adjust reported income to free it from its strong association with age at the time of the survey. Of particular note are the significant effects found for income, in spite of universal public health care coverage. Healthy Aging at Older Ages: Are Income and Education Important?
Being higher on the socioeconomic scale is correlated with being in better health, but is there is a causal relationship? Using three years of longitudinal data for individuals aged 50 and older from the Canadian Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics, we study the health transitions for those who were in good health in the first year, focussing especially on income and education. The initial good health restriction removes from the sample those whose incomes may have been affected by a previous history of poor health, thus avoiding a well known problem of econometric endogeneity. We then ask, for those in good health, whether later transitions in health status are related to socioeconomic status. Socioeconomic Influence on the Health of Older People: Estimates Based on Two Longitudinal Surveys
There is a strong positive relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and health, but identifying the direction of causation is difficult. This study exploits the longitudinal nature of two Canadian surveys, the Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics and the National Population Health Survey, to study the link from SES to health. For people aged 50 and older who are initially in good health we examine whether changes in health status over the next two to four years are related to prior SES, as represented by income and education. Although the two surveys were designed for quite different purposes the evidence they yield with respect to the probability of remaining in good health is strikingly similar. Both suggest that SES does play a role, that the differences across SES groups are quantitatively significant, that the differences increase with age, and that they are much same for men and women.health; socioeconomic status; SLID; NPHS
