Pore-scale Modeling of Viscous Flow and Induced Forces in Dense Sphere Packings
We propose a method for effectively upscaling incompressible viscous flow in
large random polydispersed sphere packings: the emphasis of this method is on
the determination of the forces applied on the solid particles by the fluid.
Pore bodies and their connections are defined locally through a regular
Delaunay triangulation of the packings. Viscous flow equations are upscaled at
the pore level, and approximated with a finite volume numerical scheme. We
compare numerical simulations of the proposed method to detailed finite element
(FEM) simulations of the Stokes equations for assemblies of 8 to 200 spheres. A
good agreement is found both in terms of forces exerted on the solid particles
and effective permeability coefficients
Data mining via ILP: The application of progol to a
As far as this author is aware, this is the first paper to describe the application of Progol to enantioseparations. A scheme is proposed for data mining a relational database of published enantioseparations using Progol. The application of the scheme is described and a preliminary assessment of the usefulness of the resulting generalisations is made using their accuracy, size, ease of interpretation and chemical justification
Generalised -manifolds
We define new Riemannian structures on 7-manifolds by a differential form of
mixed degree which is the critical point of a (possibly constrained)
variational problem over a fixed cohomology class. The unconstrained critical
points generalise the notion of a manifold of holonomy , while the
constrained ones give rise to a new geometry without a classical counterpart.
We characterise these structures by the means of spinors and show the
integrability conditions to be equivalent to the supersymmetry equations on
spinors in supergravity theory of type IIA/B with bosonic background fields. In
particular, this geometry can be described by two linear metric connections
with skew torsion. Finally, we construct explicit examples by using the device

"Don't think I'm going to leave you over it": Accounts of changing hepatitis C status among couples who inject drugs.
While the health-related benefits of intimate partnership are well documented, little attention has been paid to couples exposed to high levels of social stigma and exclusion. In this project we investigated an important site of stigma for partnerships by collecting accounts of changing hepatitis C (HCV) status ("sero-change") among couples that inject drugs. We explored what these accounts reveal about the meaning of HCV for these couples, and how this understanding contributes to our collective efforts at prevention and care.
Drawing from a large dataset of qualitative interviews with couples, we focussed on those containing reports of sero-change. By adopting a methodology that positioned partnerships rather than individuals as the primary unit of analysis, we addressed the commonplace tendency to either overlook or discount as dysfunctional, the sexual relationships of people who inject drugs.
While some couples sought greater biomedical understanding as a means of coming to terms with sero-change, others drew on alternative logics or "rationalities" that sat firmly outside conventional biomedical discourse (privileging notions of kinship, for example). Regardless of which explanatory framework they drew on, participants ultimately prioritised the security of their relationship over the dangers of viral infection.
Effectively engaging couples in HCV prevention and care requires acknowledging and working with the competing priorities and complex realities of such partnerships beyond simply the identification of viral risk. The "new era" of direct acting antiviral treatments will provide ongoing opportunities to learn to integrate biomedical information within more socially sophisticated, relationally aware approaches
Added Value Report: University of Westminster Transformation in Students Project
One of the core aims that all Higher Education institutions share is to enhance graduate employability, and develop a workforce that is ready for the constantly changing labour market. While the concept of employability is shifting and variable (e.g. students as ‘customers’ and/or ‘partners’ (Skea, 2017), it is necessary to develop inclusive measures of employability that can extend beyond generic skills, and include values and identity-driven attributes. The literature recognises that graduate attributes are a set of desirable skills, qualities and understandings that both the University and students deem as important for employment and for shaping identities within the labour market (O’Leary, 2016; Bridgstock, 2009; Tomlinson, 2007). Thus, focus groups and interviews were carried out with undergraduates, postgraduates and alumni to explore their experiences at the University of Westminster, and to elicit the values and qualities that they consider important and personally valuable to their success in the future. This report presents qualitative findings on students’ experiences of gaining “added value” from their time at Westminster. Subsequently, we will use the results to create a robust survey that gives a scientific measurement of students’ attribute development throughout their studies at University
Coexistence of orbital and quantum critical magnetoresistance in FeSeS
The recent discovery of a non-magnetic nematic quantum critical point (QCP)
in the iron chalcogenide family FeSeS has raised the prospect of
investigating, in isolation, the role of nematicity on the electronic
properties of correlated metals. Here we report a detailed study of the normal
state transverse magnetoresistance (MR) in FeSeS for a series of
S concentrations spanning the nematic QCP. For all temperatures and
\textit{x}-values studied, the MR can be decomposed into two distinct
components: one that varies quadratically in magnetic field strength
and one that follows precisely the quadrature scaling form
recently reported in metals at or close to a QCP and characterized by a
\textit{H}-linear MR over an extended field range. The two components evolve
systematically with both temperature and S-substitution in a manner that is
determined by their proximity to the nematic QCP. This study thus reveals
unambiguously the coexistence of two independent charge sectors in a quantum
critical system. Moreover, the quantum critical component of the MR is found to
be less sensitive to disorder than the quadratic (orbital) MR, suggesting that
detection of the latter in previous MR studies of metals near a QCP may have

The SAMI Galaxy Survey: Unveiling the nature of kinematically offset active galactic nuclei
We have observed two kinematically offset active galactic nuclei (AGN), whose
ionised gas is at a different line-of-sight velocity to their host galaxies,
with the SAMI integral field spectrograph (IFS). One of the galaxies shows gas
kinematics very different to the stellar kinematics, indicating a recent merger
or accretion event. We demonstrate that the star formation associated with this
event was triggered within the last 100 Myr. The other galaxy shows simple disc
rotation in both gas and stellar kinematics, aligned with each other, but in
the central region has signatures of an outflow driven by the AGN. Other than
the outflow, neither galaxy shows any discontinuity in the ionised gas
kinematics at the galaxy's centre. We conclude that in these two cases there is
no direct evidence of the AGN being in a supermassive black hole binary system.
Our study demonstrates that selecting kinematically offset AGN from
single-fibre spectroscopy provides, by definition, samples of kinematically
peculiar objects, but IFS or other data are required to determine their true

Factors determining the home ranges of pet cats: A meta-analysis
Roaming pet cats Felis catus are a significant conservation issue because they may hunt, harass and compete with wildlife; spread disease, interbreed with cats in feral populations, and hybridise with wild native felids. Studies of the roaming behaviour of pet cats are often hampered by modest sample sizes and variability between cats, limiting statistical significance of the findings and their usefulness in recommending measures to discourage roaming. We resolved these difficulties through meta-analyses of 25 studies from 10 countries involving 469 pet cats to assess the influence of sex, whether a cat was desexed and housing density on roaming. A complementary linear mixed models approach used data on 311 individual animals from 22 studies and was also able to assess the influence of age and husbandry practices on roaming. This restricted sample gave greater statistical power than the meta-analyses. Meta-analyses found that: male pet cats had larger home ranges than females, desexing did not influence home range, and cats had larger home ranges when housing densities were low. The linear mixed models supported those results. They also indicated that animals ≥ 8 years old had smaller home ranges than younger cats. Cats fed regularly, provided with veterinary care and socialised with humans had similar home ranges to cats living in association with households but not provided for in some of these ways. Short of confinement, there is no simple measure owners can adopt to reduce roaming by their cats and prevent the associated environmental problems
Variability in H9N2 haemagglutinin receptor-binding preference and the pH of fusion
H9N2 avian influenza viruses are primarily a disease of poultry; however, they occasionally infect humans and are considered a potential pandemic threat. Little work has been performed to assess the intrinsic biochemical properties related to zoonotic potential of H9N2 viruses. The objective of this study, therefore, was to investigate H9N2 haemagglutinins (HAs) using two well-known correlates for human adaption: receptor-binding avidity and pH of fusion. Receptor binding was characterized using bio-layer interferometry to measure virus binding to human and avian-like receptor analogues and the pH of fusion was assayed by syncytium formation in virus-infected cells at different pHs. We characterized contemporary H9N2 viruses of the zoonotic G1 lineage, as well as representative viruses of the zoonotic BJ94 lineage. We found that most contemporary H9N2 viruses show a preference for sulphated avian-like receptor analogues. However, the ‘Eastern’ G1 H9N2 viruses displayed a consistent preference in binding to a human-like receptor analogue. We demonstrate that the presence of leucine at position 226 of the HA receptor-binding site correlated poorly with the ability to bind a human-like sialic acid receptor. H9N2 HAs also display variability in their pH of fusion, ranging between pH 5.4 and 5.85 which is similar to that of the first wave of human H1N1pdm09 viruses but lower than the pH of fusion seen in zoonotic H5N1 and H7N9 viruses. Our results suggest possible molecular mechanisms that may underlie the relatively high prevalence of human zoonotic infection by particular H9N2 virus lineages
