Constructing compact 8-manifolds with holonomy Spin(7) from Calabi-Yau orbifolds
Compact Riemannian 7- and 8-manifolds with holonomy G(2) arid Spin(7) were first constructed by the author in 1994-5, by resolving orbifolds T-7/Gamma and T-8/Gamma. This paper describes a new construction of compact 8-manifolds with holonomy Spin(7). We start with a Calabi-Yau 4-orbifold Y with isolated singularities of a special kind. We divide by an antiholomorphic involution a of Y to get a real 8-orbifold Z = Y/. Then we resolve tire singularities of Z to get a compact 8-manifold M, which has metrics with holonomy Spin(7). Manifolds constructed in this way typically have large fourth Betti number b(4)(M).</sigma
Differential systems associated with tableaux over Lie algebras
We give an account of the construction of exterior differential systems based
on the notion of tableaux over Lie algebras as developed in [Comm. Anal. Geom
14 (2006), 475-496; math.DG/0412169]. The definition of a tableau over a Lie
algebra is revisited and extended in the light of the formalism of the Spencer
cohomology; the question of involutiveness for the associated systems and their

Fibroblast-derived HGF drives acinar lung cancer cell polarization through integrin-dependent RhoA-ROCK1 inhibition
The formation of lumens in epithelial tissues requires apical-basal polarization of cells, and the co-ordination of this individual polarity collectively around a contiguous lumen. Signals from the Extracellular Matrix (ECM) instruct epithelia as to the orientation of where basal, and thus consequently apical, surfaces should be formed. We report that this pathway is normally absent in Calu-3 human lung adenocarcinoma cells in 3-Dimensional culture, but that paracrine signals from MRC5 lung fibroblasts can induce correct orientation of polarity and acinar morphogenesis. We identify HGF, acting through the c-Met receptor, as the key polarity-inducing morphogen, which acts to activate β1-integrin-dependent adhesion. HGF and ECM-derived integrin signals co-operate via a c-Src-dependent inhibition of the RhoA-ROCK1 signalling pathway via p190A RhoGAP. This occurred via controlling localization of these signalling pathways to the ECM-abutting surface of cells in 3-Dimensional culture. Thus, stromal derived signals can influence morphogenesis in epithelial cells by controlling activation and localization of cell polarity pathways
The MVA Priority Approximation
A Mean Value Analysis (MVA) approximation is presented for computing the average performance measures of closed-, open-, and mixed-type multiclass queuing networks containing Preemptive Resume (PR) and nonpreemptive Head-Of-Line (HOL) priority service centers. The approximation has essentially the same storage and computational requirements as MVA, thus allowing computationally efficient solutions of large priority queuing networks. The accuracy of the MVA approximation is systematically investigated and presented. It is shown that the approximation can compute the average performance measures of priority networks to within an accuracy of 5 percent for a large range of network parameter values. Accuracy of the method is shown to be superior to that of Sevcik's shadow approximation
Closed trajectories of a particle model on null curves in anti-de Sitter 3-space
We study the existence of closed trajectories of a particle model on null
curves in anti-de Sitter 3-space defined by a functional which is linear in the
curvature of the particle path. Explicit expressions for the trajectories are
found and the existence of infinitely many closed trajectories is proved.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figur
Calibrated Sub-Bundles in Non-Compact Manifolds of Special Holonomy
This paper is a continuation of math.DG/0408005. We first construct special
Lagrangian submanifolds of the Ricci-flat Stenzel metric (of holonomy SU(n)) on
the cotangent bundle of S^n by looking at the conormal bundle of appropriate
submanifolds of S^n. We find that the condition for the conormal bundle to be
special Lagrangian is the same as that discovered by Harvey-Lawson for
submanifolds in R^n in their pioneering paper. We also construct calibrated
submanifolds in complete metrics with special holonomy G_2 and Spin(7)
discovered by Bryant and Salamon on the total spaces of appropriate bundles
over self-dual Einstein four manifolds. The submanifolds are constructed as
certain subbundles over immersed surfaces. We show that this construction
requires the surface to be minimal in the associative and Cayley cases, and to
be (properly oriented) real isotropic in the coassociative case. We also make
some remarks about using these constructions as a possible local model for the
intersection of compact calibrated submanifolds in a compact manifold with

Modified Debye-Huckel Electron Shielding and Penetration Factor
Screened potential, modified by non standard electron cloud distributions
responsible for the shielding effect on fusion of reacting nuclei in
astrophysical plasmas, is derived. The case of clouds with depleted tails in
space coordinates is discussed. The modified screened potential is obtained
both from statistical mechanics arguments based on fluctuations of the inverse
of the Debye-Huckel radius and from the solution of a Bernoulli equation used
in generalized statistical mechanics. Plots and tables useful in evaluating

Can fundamental movement skill mastery be increased via a six week physical activity intervention to have positive effects on physical activity and physical self-perception?
Previous research has suggested a positive relationship between fundamental movement skills (FMS) mastery and physical activity (PA) level. Research conducted on interventions to improve FMS mastery is equivocal and further research is needed.An intervention group of 82 children (35 boys and 47 girls) and a control group of 83 children (42 boys and 41 girls) were recruited from Years 4 and 5 (mean age ± SD = 8.3 ± 0.4 years) of two schools in Central England. The intervention included a combination of circuits and dancing to music. Pre and post intervention tests were conducted. Tests included: subjective assessment of eight FMS; objective measurement of two FMS; four day pedometer step count recording; height and mass for Body Mass Index (BMI); and the completion of Harter et al.'s (1982) self-perception questionnaire.Following a two (pre to post) by two (intervention and control group) mixed-model ANOVA it was highlighted that the intervention group improved mastery in all eight FMS, and increased both daily steps and physical self-perception.It can be concluded that focussing one Physical Education (PE) lesson per week on the development of FMS has had a positive benefit on FMS, PA level and physical self-perception for the children in this study
Circular Networks from Distorted Metrics
Trees have long been used as a graphical representation of species
relationships. However complex evolutionary events, such as genetic
reassortments or hybrid speciations which occur commonly in viruses, bacteria
and plants, do not fit into this elementary framework. Alternatively, various
network representations have been developed. Circular networks are a natural
generalization of leaf-labeled trees interpreted as split systems, that is,
collections of bipartitions over leaf labels corresponding to current species.
Although such networks do not explicitly model specific evolutionary events of
interest, their straightforward visualization and fast reconstruction have made
them a popular exploratory tool to detect network-like evolution in genetic
datasets.
Standard reconstruction methods for circular networks, such as Neighbor-Net,
rely on an associated metric on the species set. Such a metric is first
estimated from DNA sequences, which leads to a key difficulty: distantly
related sequences produce statistically unreliable estimates. This is
problematic for Neighbor-Net as it is based on the popular tree reconstruction
method Neighbor-Joining, whose sensitivity to distance estimation errors is
well established theoretically. In the tree case, more robust reconstruction
methods have been developed using the notion of a distorted metric, which
captures the dependence of the error in the distance through a radius of
accuracy. Here we design the first circular network reconstruction method based
on distorted metrics. Our method is computationally efficient. Moreover, the
analysis of its radius of accuracy highlights the important role played by the
maximum incompatibility, a measure of the extent to which the network differs

The G_2 sphere over a 4-manifold
We present a construction of a canonical G_2 structure on the unit sphere
tangent bundle S_M of any given orientable Riemannian 4-manifold M. Such
structure is never geometric or 1-flat, but seems full of other possibilities.
We start by the study of the most basic properties of our construction. The
structure is co-calibrated if, and only if, M is an Einstein manifold. The
fibres are always associative. In fact, the associated 3-form results from a
linear combination of three other volume 3-forms, one of which is the volume of
the fibres. We also give new examples of co-calibrated structures on well known
spaces. We hope this contributes both to the knowledge of special geometries
and to the study of 4-manifolds.Comment: 13 page
