State-space model identification and feedback control of unsteady aerodynamic forces
Unsteady aerodynamic models are necessary to accurately simulate forces and
develop feedback controllers for wings in agile motion; however, these models
are often high dimensional or incompatible with modern control techniques.
Recently, reduced-order unsteady aerodynamic models have been developed for a
pitching and plunging airfoil by linearizing the discretized Navier-Stokes
equation with lift-force output. In this work, we extend these reduced-order
models to include multiple inputs (pitch, plunge, and surge) and explicit
parameterization by the pitch-axis location, inspired by Theodorsen's model.
Next, we investigate the na\"{\i}ve application of system identification
techniques to input--output data and the resulting pitfalls, such as unstable
or inaccurate models. Finally, robust feedback controllers are constructed
based on these low-dimensional state-space models for simulations of a rigid
flat plate at Reynolds number 100. Various controllers are implemented for
models linearized at base angles of attack , and . The resulting control laws are
able to track an aggressive reference lift trajectory while attenuating sensor
noise and compensating for strong nonlinearities.Comment: 20 pages, 13 figure

Recolonization of Raoul Island by Kermadec red-crowned parakeets Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae cyanurus after eradication of invasive predators, Kermadec Islands archipelago, New Zealand
The Kermadec red-crowned parakeet Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae was driven to extinction on Raoul Island over 150 years ago by introduced cats Felis catus and rats (Rattus norvegicus and R. exulans). These predators were eradicated from the island (2,938 ha) between 2002-04 during the world’s largest multispecies eradication project. In 2008 we documented a unique recolonisation event when parakeets were observed to have returned to Raoul, presumably from a nearby island group, The Herald Islets (51 ha). We captured and aged 100 parakeets, of which 44% were born in 2008, and breeding was observed on Raoul Island. This represents the first evidence of nesting of this species on Raoul Island since 1836. Our findings highlight the global conservation potential for island avifaunas by prioritising eradication areas through consideration of proximity of remnant populations to target management locations, instead of the classical translocation approach alone. The natural recolonization of parakeets on Raoul Island from a satellite source population is to our knowledge, a first for parrot conservation and the first documented population expansion and island recolonization of a parrot species after removal of invasive predators
New tests of the pp-wave correspondence.
The pp-wave/SYM correspondence is an equivalence relation, H string = Δ-J , between the hamiltonian H string of string field theory in the pp-wave background and the dilatation operator Δ in = 4 Super Yang-Mills in the double scaling limit. We calculate matrix elements of these operators in string field theory and in gauge theory. In the string theory Hilbert space we use the natural string basis, and in the gauge theory we use the basis which is isomorphic to it. States in this basis are specific linear combinations of the original BMN operators, and were constructed previously for the case of two scalar impurities. We extend this construction to incorporate BMN operators with vector and mixed impurities. This enables us to verify from the gauge theory perspective two key properties of the three-string interaction vertex of Spradlin and Volovich: (1) the vanishing of the three-string amplitude for string states with one vector and one scalar impurity; and (2) the relative minus sign in the string amplitude involving states with two vector impurities compared to that with two scalar impurities. This implies a spontaneous breaking of the 2 symmetry of the string field theory in the pp-wave background. Furthermore, we calculate the gauge theory matrix elements of Δ-J for states with an arbitrary number of scalar impurities. In all cases we find perfect agreement with the corresponding string amplitudes derived from the three-string vertex
