Corrigendum to : Around l-independence
We correct the proof of the main â„“ -independence result of the above-mentioned paper by showing that for any smooth and proper variety over an equicharacteristic local field, there exists a globally defined such variety with the same ( p -adic and â„“ -adic) cohomology
Around -independence
In this article we study various forms of -independence (including the
case ) for the cohomology and fundamental groups of varieties over
finite fields and equicharacteristic local fields. Our first result is a strong
form of -independence for the unipotent fundamental group of smooth and
projective varieties over finite fields, by then proving a certain `spreading
out' result we are able to deduce a much weaker form of -independence for
unipotent fundamental groups over equicharacteristic local fields, at least in
the semistable case. In a similar vein, we can also use this to deduce
-independence results for the cohomology of semistable varieties from the
well-known results on -independence for smooth and proper varieties over
finite fields. As another consequence of this `spreading out' result we are
able to deduce the existence of a Clemens--Schmid exact sequence for formal
semistable families. Finally, by deforming to characteristic we show a
similar weak version of -independence for the unipotent fundamental group
of a semistable curve in mixed characteristic.Comment: 23 pages, comments welcom
Combinatorial degenerations of surfaces and Calabi--Yau threefolds
In this article we study combinatorial degenerations of minimal surfaces of
Kodaira dimension 0 over local fields, and in particular show that the `type'
of the degeneration can be read off from the monodromy operator acting on a
suitable cohomology group. This can be viewed as an arithmetic analogue of
results of Persson and Kulikov on degenerations of complex surfaces, and
extends various particular cases studied by Matsumoto, Liedtke/Matsumoto and
Hern\'andez-Mada. We also study `maximally unipotent' degenerations of
Calabi--Yau threefolds, following Koll\'ar/Xu, showing in this case that the
dual intersection graph is a 3-sphere.Comment: 27 pages. Final version, published in Algebra & Number Theor
Effective Feature Representation for Clinical Text Concept Extraction
Crucial information about the practice of healthcare is recorded only in
free-form text, which creates an enormous opportunity for high-impact NLP.
However, annotated healthcare datasets tend to be small and expensive to
obtain, which raises the question of how to make maximally efficient uses of
the available data. To this end, we develop an LSTM-CRF model for combining
unsupervised word representations and hand-built feature representations
derived from publicly available healthcare ontologies. We show that this
combined model yields superior performance on five datasets of diverse kinds of
healthcare text (clinical, social, scientific, commercial). Each involves the
labeling of complex, multi-word spans that pick out different healthcare
concepts. We also introduce a new labeled dataset for identifying the treatment
relations between drugs and diseases
Jesus Is Our Jubilee... But How? The OT Background and Lukan Fulfillment of the Ethics of Jubilee
In the contemporary Christian church, one does not need to look far to find references to the biblical Jubilee. On the campus of Wheaton College, the World Christian Fellowship sponsors a yearly Jubilee week, in which students are challenged to think globally about the world Christian movement. A branch of a local charitable organization is called the “Jubilee Furniture Company.” This group raises funds for Christian outreach through the re-sale of furniture and supplies needy families with home furnishings. An internet search will lead one to the Jubilee Christian Church, the Jubilee Christian Academy, and even the Jubilee Water Park and Resort.
In the history of the church, the Jubilee has often played a significant role. In the year 1300, Pope Boniface VIII proclaimed a “Jubilee” plenary indulgence for the forgiveness of sin for all those who fulfilled the necessary requirements. Although these papal proclamations have continued until the present day and other biblical interpreters have often called for the church to “proclaim a Jubilee,” the last decade has seen an increase in these calls with the turn of the millennium and frequent appeals for debt forgiveness for African nations as an expression of Jubilee.
In this article, we will begin by summarizing three such calls for a modern Jubilee: the theological summary in Jubilee 2000: Economic Justice for Churches in Eastern and Southern Africa; Christopher J. H. Wright’s Old Testament Ethics for the People of God; and John Howard Yoder’s The Politics of Jesus. After briefly outlining each of these proposals, we will turn to the biblical data in an attempt to summarize the main themes connected to Jubilee. Finally, we will return to these initial proposals and evaluate them in light of the biblical data
