Discovering the Data of Safety: Embry-Riddle’s Aviation Safety and Security Archives
The path to the sky and beyond has not been simple or obstacle-free, but dedicated dreamers have worked to overcome obstacles, learn from mishaps, and develop new technologies to achieve their goals. As the leading university for aviation and aerospace education, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University maintains a firm commitment to the practice and study of safety. As part of this mission, the university has established the Aviation Safety and Security Archives (ASASA) which is a national treasure of aviation safety history and information
Adsorption hysteresis and capillary condensation in disordered porous solids: a density functional study
We present a theoretical study of capillary condensation of fluids adsorbed
in mesoporous disordered media. Combining mean-field density functional theory
with a coarse-grained description in terms of a lattice-gas model allows us to
investigate both the out-of-equilibrium (hysteresis) and the equilibrium
behavior. We show that the main features of capillary condensation in
disordered solids result from the appearance of a complex free-energy landscape
with a large number of metastable states. We detail the numerical procedures
for finding these states, and the presence or absence of transitions in the
thermodynamic limit is determined by careful finite-size studies.Comment: 30 pages, 18 figures. To appear in J. Phys.: Condens. Matte
J D Bernal: philosophy, politics and the science of science
This paper is an examination of the philosophical and political legacy of John Desmond Bernal. It addresses the evidence of an emerging consensus on Bernal based on the recent biography of Bernal by Andrew Brown and the reviews it has received. It takes issue with this view of Bernal, which tends to be admiring of his scientific contribution, bemused by his sexuality, condescending to his philosophy and hostile to his politics. This article is a critical defence of his philosophical and political position

Loss of strength in Ni3Al at elevated temperatures
Stress decrease above the stress peak temperature (750 K) is studied in h123i single crystals of Ni3(Al, 3 at.% Hf ). Two thermally activated deformation mechanisms are evidenced on the basis of stress relaxation and strain rate change experiments. From 500 to 1070 K, the continuity of the activation volume/temperature curves reveals a single mechanism of activation enthalpy 3.8 eV/atom and volume 90 b3 at 810K with an athermal stress of 330 MPa. Over the very same temperature interval, impurity or solute diffusion towards dislocation cores is evidenced
through serrated yielding, peculiar shapes of stress–strain curves while changing the rate of straining and stress relaxation experiments. This complicates the
identification of the deformation mechanism, which is likely connected with cube glide. From 1070 to 1270 K, the high-temperature mechanism has an activation
enthalpy and volume of 4.8 eV/atom and 20 b3, respectively, at 1250 K
Perturbative Evaluation of the Zero-Point function for Self-Interacting Scalar Field on a Manifold with Boundary
The character of quantum corrections to the gravitational action of a
conformally invariant field theory for a self-interacting scalar field on a
manifold with boundary is considered at third loop-order in the perturbative
expansion of the zero-point function. Diagramatic evaluations and higher
loop-order renormalisation can be best accomplished on a Riemannian manifold of
constant curvature accommodating a boundary of constant extrinsic curvature.
The associated spherical formulation for diagramatic evaluations reveals a
non-trivial effect which the topology of the manifold has on the vacuum
processes and which ultimately dissociates the dynamical behaviour of the
quantised field from its behaviour in the absence of a boundary. The first
surface divergence is evaluated and the necessity for simultaneous
renormalisation of volume and surface divergences is shown.Comment: 19 pages, 2 figures, one figure and references added, substantial

Fashion showcases design: perceptions of the showcase in the brazilian popular market
The present work aims to present the showcase, its relation with the building, with fashion and with the observer. The importance of this exhibition space extends from the aesthetic and communication functions to be part of a wide textile and clothing chain. This role integrates the whole cycle of creation, textiles, clothing and fashion accessories. For this article we used bibliographical references of design and fashion, as well as methodologies of photographic and ethnographic documentation, with application of focus groups. From the focus groups were identified descriptors related to emotional design. Such descriptors point to the emotions arising from memories, tastes and attitudes. These factors can lead to decisions and assist the wider knowledge of the target audience.- This work is supported by CNPq funding on the Programa Ciencias Sem Fronteiras - CSF by national funds within the scope of the project Processo no 203068/2014-9.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
High Adherence Is Necessary to Realize Health Gains from Water Quality Interventions
BACKGROUND: Safe drinking water is critical for health. Household water treatment (HWT) has been recommended for improving access to potable water where existing sources are unsafe. Reports of low adherence to HWT may limit the usefulness of this approach, however. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We constructed a quantitative microbial risk model to predict gains in health attributable to water quality interventions based on a range of assumptions about pre-treatment water quality; treatment effectiveness in reducing bacteria, viruses, and protozoan parasites; adherence to treatment interventions; volume of water consumed per person per day; and other variables. According to mean estimates, greater than 500 DALYs may be averted per 100,000 person-years with increased access to safe water, assuming moderately poor pre-treatment water quality that is a source of risk and high treatment adherence (>90% of water consumed is treated). A decline in adherence from 100% to 90% reduces predicted health gains by up to 96%, with sharpest declines when pre-treatment water quality is of higher risk. CONCLUSIONS: Results suggest that high adherence is essential in order to realize potential health gains from HWT
