Floodplain connectivity, disturbance and change: a palaeoentomological investigation of floodplain ecology from south-west England
1. Floodplain environments are increasingly subject to enhancement and restoration, with the purpose of increasing their biodiversity and returning them to a more 'natural' state. Defining such a state based solely upon neoecological data is problematic and has led several authors to suggest the use of a palaeoecological approach.2. Fossil Coleopteran assemblages recovered from multiple palaeochannel fills in south-west England were used to investigate past floodplain and channel characteristics during the mid- to late-Holocene. Ordination of coleopteran data was performed using Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA) and produced clear and discrete clustering. This clustering pattern is related to the nature of the environment in which assemblages were deposited and hence channel configuration and dynamics.3. The DCA clustering pattern is strongly related to measures of ecological evenness, and a strong relationship between these indices and the composition of the water beetle assemblage within samples was revealed. Repeating the ordination with presence–absence data results in a similar pattern of clustering, implying that assemblage composition is crucial in determining cluster placement.4. As assemblage composition is primarily a function of floodplain topography and hence disturbance regime, we attempt to relate these data to the Intermediate Disturbance Hypothesis (IDH). A significant positive correlation was found between ecological diversity (Shannon's H') and Axis 1 of all ordinations in predominantly aquatic assemblages
Effects of Meson Mass Reduction on the Properties of Neutron Star Matter
We investigate the effects of meson-mass reduction on the properties of the
neutron star matter. We adopt the Brown-Rho scaling law to take into account
density dependence of meson masses in the quantum hadrodynamics, quark-meson
coupling and modified quark-meson coupling models. It is found that the
equation of state becomes stiff when the mass of meson is reduced in dense
medium. We discuss its implication on the properties of the neutron star.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures and 10 references. Use espcrc1.sty. Appeared in

Duality of Quasilocal Gravitational Energy and Charges with Non-orthogonal Boundaries
We study the duality of quasilocal energy and charges with non-orthogonal
boundaries in the (2+1)-dimensional low-energy string theory. Quasilocal
quantities shown in the previous work and some new variables arisen from
considering the non-orthogonal boundaries as well are presented, and the boost
relations between those quantities are discussed. Moreover, we show that the
dual properties of quasilocal variables such as quasilocal energy density,
momentum densities, surface stress densities, dilaton pressure densities, and
Neuve-Schwarz(NS) charge density, are still valid in the moving observer's
frame.Comment: 19pages, 1figure, RevTe

Generation and Evolution of Spin Entanglement in NRQED
A complete analysis on the generation of spin entanglement from NRQED is
presented. The results of entanglement are obtained with relativistic
correction to the leading order of (v/c)^2. It is shown that to this order the
degree of entanglement of a singlet state does not change under time evolution
whereas the triplet state can change.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Magnetic Branes in Gauss-Bonnet Gravity
We present two new classes of magnetic brane solutions in
Einstein-Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with a negative cosmological constant.
The first class of solutions yields an -dimensional spacetime with a
longitudinal magnetic field generated by a static magnetic brane. We also
generalize this solution to the case of spinning magnetic branes with one or
more rotation parameters. We find that these solutions have no curvature
singularity and no horizons, but have a conic geometry. In these spacetimes,
when all the rotation parameters are zero, the electric field vanishes, and
therefore the brane has no net electric charge. For the spinning brane, when
one or more rotation parameters are non zero, the brane has a net electric
charge which is proportional to the magnitude of the rotation parameter. The
second class of solutions yields a spacetime with an angular magnetic field.
These solutions have no curvature singularity, no horizon, and no conical
singularity. Again we find that the net electric charge of the branes in these
spacetimes is proportional to the magnitude of the velocity of the brane.
Finally, we use the counterterm method in the Gauss-Bonnet gravity and compute
the conserved quantities of these spacetimes.Comment: 17 pages, No figure, The version to be published in Phys. Rev.

Different nonideality relationships, different databases and their effects on modeling precipitation from concentrated solutions using numerical speciation codes
Four simple precipitation problems are solved to examine the use of numerical equilibrium codes. The study emphasizes concentrated solutions, assumes both ideal and nonideal solutions, and employs different databases and different activity-coefficient relationships. The study uses the EQ3/6 numerical speciation codes. The results show satisfactory material balances and agreement between solubility products calculated from free-energy relationships and those calculated from concentrations and activity coefficients. Precipitates show slightly higher solubilities when the solutions are regarded as nonideal than when considered ideal, agreeing with theory. When a substance may precipitate from a solution dilute in the precipitating substance, a code may or may not predict precipitation, depending on the database or activity-coefficient relationship used. In a problem involving a two-component precipitation, there are only small differences in the precipitate mass and composition between the ideal and nonideal solution calculations. Analysis of this result indicates that this may be a frequent occurrence. An analytical approach is derived for judging whether this phenomenon will occur in any real or postulated precipitation situation. The discussion looks at applications of this approach. In the solutes remaining after the precipitations, there seems to be little consistency in the calculated concentrations and activity coefficients. They do not appear to depend in any coherent manner on the database or activity-coefficient relationship used. These results reinforce warnings in the literature about perfunctory or mechanical use of numerical speciation codes
Ricci flat rotating black branes with a conformally invariant Maxwell source
We consider Einstein gravity coupled to an gauge field for which the
density is given by a power of the Maxwell Lagrangian. In -dimensions the
action of Maxwell field is shown to enjoy the conformal invariance if the power
is chosen as . We present a class of charge rotating solutions in
Einstein-conformally invariant Maxwell gravity in the presence of a
cosmological constant. These solutions may be interpreted as black brane
solutions with inner and outer event horizons or an extreme black brane
depending on the value of the mass parameter. Since we are considering power of
the Maxwell density, the black brane solutions exist only for dimensions which
are multiples of four. We compute conserved and thermodynamics quantities of
the black brane solutions and show that the expression of the electric field
does not depend on the dimension. Also, we obtain a Smarr-type formula and show
that these conserved and thermodynamic quantities of black branes satisfy the
first law of thermodynamics. Finally, we study the phase behavior of the
rotating black branes and show that there is no Hawking--Page phase transition
in spite of conformally invariant Maxwell field.Comment: 13 pages, one figur
Horizonless Rotating Solutions in -dimensional Einstein-Maxwell Gravity
We introduce two classes of rotating solutions of Einstein-Maxwell gravity in
dimensions which are asymptotically anti-de Sitter type. They have no
curvature singularity and no horizons. The first class of solutions, which has
a conic singularity yields a spacetime with a longitudinal magnetic field and
rotation parameters. We show that when one or more of the rotation
parameters are non zero, the spinning brane has a net electric charge that is
proportional to the magnitude of the rotation parameters. The second class of
solutions yields a spacetime with an angular magnetic field and
boost parameters. We find that the net electric charge of these traveling
branes with one or more nonzero boost parameters is proportional to the
magnitude of the velocity of the brane. We also use the counterterm method
inspired by AdS/CFT correspondence and calculate the conserved quantities of
the solutions. We show that the logarithmic divergencies associated to the Weyl
anomalies and matter field are zero, and the divergence of the action can
be removed by the counterterm method.Comment: 14 pages, references added, Sec. II amended, an appendix added. The

Charged rotating dilaton black branes in AdS universe
We present the metric for the -dimensional charged rotating dilaton
black branes with cylindrical or toroidal horizons in the background of anti-de
Sitter spacetime. We find the suitable counterterm which removes the
divergences of the action in the presence of the dilaton potential in all
higher dimensions. We plot the Penrose diagrams of the spacetime and reveal
that the spacetime geometry crucially modifies in the presence of the dilaton
field. The conserved and thermodynamic quantities of the black branes are also
computed.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, to appear in Gen. Relat. Gravi
