    The Polarizing Effect of Arousal on Negotiation

    In this research, we examined the impact of physiological arousal on negotiation outcomes. Conventional wisdom and the prescriptive literature suggest that arousal should be minimized given its negative effect on negotiations, whereas prior research on misattribution of arousal suggests that arousal might polarize outcomes, either negatively or positively. In two experiments, we manipulated arousal and measured its effect on subjective and objective negotiation outcomes. Our results support the polarization effect. When participants had negative prior attitudes toward negotiation, arousal had a detrimental effect on outcomes, whereas when participants had positive prior attitudes toward negotiation, arousal had a beneficial effect on outcomes. These effects occurred because of the construal of arousal as negative or positive affect, respectively. Our findings have important implications not only for negotiation, but also for research on misattribution of arousal, which previously has focused on the target of evaluation, in contrast to the current research, which focused on the critical role of the perceiver

    Measurement of nitrate and nitrite in biopsy-sized muscle samples using HPLC

    Studies of rats have indicated that skeletal muscle plays a central role in whole-body nitrate ( NO−3 )/nitrite ( NO−2 )/nitric oxide (NO) metabolism. Extending these results to humans, however, is challenging due to the small size of needle biopsy samples. We therefore developed a method to precisely and accurately quantify NO−3 and NO−2 in biopsy-sized muscle samples. NO−3 and NO−2 were extracted from rat soleus samples using methanol combined with mechanical homogenization + ultrasound, bead beating, pulverization at liquid N2 temperature or pulverization + 0.5% Triton X-100. After centrifugation to remove proteins, NO−3 and NO−2 were measured using HPLC. Mechanical homogenization + ultrasound resulted in the lowest NO−3 content (62 ± 20 pmol/mg), with high variability [coefficient of variation (CV) >50%] across samples from the same muscle. The NO−2 / NO−3 ratio (0.019 ± 0.006) was also elevated, suggestive of NO−3 reduction during tissue processing. Bead beating or pulverization yielded lower NO−2 and slightly higher NO−3 levels, but reproducibility was still poor. Pulverization + 0.5% Triton X-100 provided the highest NO−3 content (124 ± 12 pmol/mg) and lowest NO−2 / NO−3 ratio (0.008 ± 0.001), with the least variability between duplicate samples (CV ~15%). These values are consistent with literature data from larger rat muscle samples analyzed using chemiluminescence. Samples were stable for at least 5 wk at -80°C, provided residual xanthine oxidoreductase activity was blocked using 0.1 mmol/l oxypurinol. We have developed a method capable of measuring NO−3 and NO−2 in <1 mg of muscle. This method should prove highly useful in investigating the role of skeletal muscle in NO−3 / NO−2 /NO metabolism in human health and disease.     A Wide-Field CCD Survey for Centaurs and Kuiper Belt Objects

    A modified Baker-Nunn camera was used to conduct a wide-field survey of 1428 square degrees of sky near the ecliptic in search of bright Kuiper Belt objects and Centaurs. This area is an order of magnitude larger than any previously published CCD survey for Centaurs and Kuiper Belt Objects. No new objects brighter than red magnitude m=18.8 and moving at a rate 1"/hr to 20"/hr were discovered, although one previously discovered Centaur 1997 CU26 Chariklo was serendipitously detected. The parameters of the survey were characterized using both visual and automated techniques. From this survey the empirical projected surface density of Centaurs was found to be SigmaCentaur(m<18.8)=7.8(+16.0 -6.6)x10^-4 per square degree and we found a projected surface density 3sigma upper confidence limit for Kuiper Belt objects of SigmaKBO(m< 18.8)<4.1x10^-3 per square degree. We discuss the current state of the cumulative luminosity functions of both Centaurs and Kuiper Belt objects. Through a Monte Carlo simulation we show that the size distribution of Centaurs is consistent with a q=4 differential power law, similar to the size distribution of the parent Kuiper Belt Objects. The Centaur population is of order 10^7 (radius > 1 km) assuming a geometric albedo of 0.04. About 100 Centaurs are larger than 50 km in radius, of which only 4 are presently known. The current total mass of the Centaurs is 10^-4 Earth Masses. No dust clouds were detected resulting from Kuiper Belt object collisions, placing a 3sigma upper limit <600 collisionally produced clouds of m<18.8 per year.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, Accepted for Publication in A

    Implementation of a novel antimicrobial stewardship strategy for rural facilities utilising telehealth

    A significant portion of healthcare takes place in small hospitals, and many are located in rural and regional areas. Facilities in these regions frequently do not have adequate resources to implement an onsite antimicrobial stewardship programme and there are limited data relating to their implementation and effectiveness. We present an innovative model of providing a specialist telehealth antimicrobial stewardship service utilising a centralised service (Queensland Statewide Antimicrobial Stewardship Program) to a rural Hospital and Health Service. Results of a 2-year post-implementation follow-up showed an improvement in adherence to guidelines [33.7% (95% CI 27.0–40.4%) vs. 54.1% (95% CI 48.7–59.5%)] and appropriateness of antimicrobial prescribing [49.0% (95% CI 42.2–55.9%) vs. 67.5% (95% CI 62.7–72.4%) (P < 0.001). This finding was sustained after adjustment for hospitals, with improvement occurring sequentially across the years for adherence to guidelines [adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 2.44, 95% CI 1.70–3.51] and appropriateness of prescribing (aOR = 2.48, 95% CI 1.70–3.61). There was a decrease in mean total antibiotic use (DDDs/1000 patient-days) between the years 2016 (52.82, 95% CI 44.09–61.54) and 2018 (39.74, 95% CI 32.76–46.73), however this did not reach statistical significance. Additionally, there was a decrease in mean hospital length of stay (days) from 2016 (3.74, 95% CI 3.08–4.41) to 2018 (2.55, 95% CI 1.98–3.12), although this was not statistically significant. New telehealth-based models of antimicrobial stewardship can be effective in improving prescribing in rural areas. Programmes similar to ours should be considered for rural facilities

    To bring insights into neurofibroma biochemistry, a comprehensive secretome analysis was performed on cultured human primary Schwann cells isolated from surgically resected plexiform neurofibroma and from normal nerve tissue. Using a combination of SDS-PAGE and high precision LC-MS/MS, 907 proteins were confidently identified in the conditioned media of Schwann cell cultures combined. Label free proteome profiling revealed consistent release of high levels of 22 proteins by the four biological replicates of NF1 Schwann cell cultures relative to the two normal Schwann cell cultures. Inversely, 9 proteins displayed decreased levels in the conditioned media of NF1 relative to normal Schwann cells. The proteins with increased levels included proteins involved in cell growth, angiogenesis and complement pathway while proteins with decreased levels included those involved in cell adhesion, plasminogen pathway and extracellular matrix remodeling. Retinoic acid receptor responder protein-1 (RARRES1), previously described as an integral membrane tumor suppressor, was found exclusively secreted by NF1 Schwann cells but not by normal Schwann cells. All-trans retinoic acid modulated secretion of RARRES1 in a dose dependent manner. This study shows altered secretion of key proteins in NF1 derived Schwann cells. The potential implication of these proteins in neurofibroma biology is discussed

    Factors controlling nutrient availability to the developing fetus in ruminants

    Inadequate delivery of nutrients results in intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), which is a leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality in livestock. In ruminants, inadequate nutrition during pregnancy is often prevalent due to frequent utilization of exensive forage based grazing systems, making them highly susceptible to changes in nutrient quality and availability. Delivery of nutrients to the fetus is dependent on a number of critical factors including placental growth and development, utero-placental blood flow, nutrient availability, and placental metabolism and transport capacity. Previous findings from our laboratory and others, highlight essential roles for amino acids and their metabolites in supporting normal fetal growth and development, as well as the critical role for amino acid transporters in nutrient delivery to the fetus. The focus of this review will be on the role of maternal nutrition on placental form and function as a regulator of fetal development in ruminants

    Perceived agency mediates the link between the narcissistic subtypes and self-esteem

    a b s t r a c t a r t i c l e i n f o Grandiose and vulnerable narcissism share some core features (e.g., entitlement, self-absorption) but differ in other important ways (e.g., self-esteem). To reconcile these differing characteristics, we predicted that differences in perceived agency mediate the association between narcissistic subtypes and differences in selfesteem. One hundred college students completed self-report measures of grandiose narcissism, vulnerable narcissism, explicit global self-esteem, and perceived agency. As predicted, grandiose narcissism was positively associated with agency and self-esteem, whereas vulnerable narcissism was negatively associated with agency and self-esteem. Perceived agency also mediated the associations between each narcissistic subtype and selfesteem. Furthermore, a partial correlation showed that when controlling for agency, the previously null correlation between measures of grandiose and vulnerable narcissism became significantly positive. These findings indicate that agency serves as a primary differentiator between the narcissistic subtypes
