    LGBTQIA+ Inclusivity in the Outdoors

    Get PDF
LGBTQIA+ individuals face barriers, inequities, and discrimination while accessing outdoor spaces and participating in outdoor education and recreation. This project focused on creating an online, asynchronous toolkit with learning activities designed for individuals and organizations within the fields of outdoor education and outdoor recreation to become aware of barriers the LGTBQIA+ community faces to accessing the outdoors and begin implementing LGBTQIA+ inclusion initiatives. The activities are intended to be completed in order, but can be adapted to best meet individual and organizational needs. Each learning activity was influenced by the research conducted for the capstone project and by examining inclusivity toolkits designed by the CDC and UNESCO. There are numerous activists and organizations focused on LGBTQIA+ inclusion in the outdoors, but formal research on this topic is limited. The goal of the project is to expose the barriers the LGBTQIA+ community faces to accessing the outdoors, examine personal and organizational biases towards LGBTQIA+ individuals, and provide resources for outdoor organizations and professionals to implement active and visible inclusion to meet the needs of the LGBTQIA+ community

This senior capstone examines the benefits of incorporating health and wellness education for 100 fifth graders from three different classrooms in a local Monterey County elementary school to gain their perspectives about the different aspects of health and wellness. Through the use of literature review, anonymous surveys with students and three fifth grader teachers, the result findings indicate that incorporating health and wellness education into fifth grade curriculum would benefit students to have a better health and wellness

Neural coding of natural and synthetic speech.

    Get PDF
The present study examined whether natural and synthetic speech are differentially encoded in the auditory cortex. Auditory event-related potential (ERP) waveforms were elicited by natural and synthetic fricative-vowel stimuli (/sɑ/ and /ʃɑ/) in a passive listening paradigm in adult listeners with normal hearing. ERP response components were compared across conditions. The results indicated that peak latencies to natural speech were significantly earlier than those to synthetic speech. Natural speech also produced significant electrode hemisphere site effects, whereas synthetic speech activated left, midline, and right electrode hemisphere sites equally. Overall, the results suggest that cortical processing of natural and synthetic speech activates distinct neural systems which has important clinical implications for the speech-language pathology field

An examination of the construct validity of the Hong Psychological Reactance Scale

    Get PDF
The purpose of the current study was to investigate the construct validity of a measure of trait reactance: the Hong Psychological Reactance Scale (HPRS). Investigating the functioning of this measure was particularly important, as the conclusions drawn from studies relating reactance to affect, attitudes, and behavior hinge on the legitimacy and quality of the HPRS. Using two samples of undergraduates, the current study employed structural equation modeling (SEM) to examine the factor structure of the HPRS and relate it to conformity, the Big Five personality traits, and entitlement. Results supported modeling the HPRS via a modified incomplete bifactor model. As expected, trait reactance was negatively related to conformity, agreeableness, and conscientiousness, and positively related to entitlement. Implications for using and scoring the HPRS are discussed
