Cone-manifolds and the density conjecture
We give an expository account of our proof that each cusp-free hyperbolic
3-manifold M with finitely generated fundamental group and incompressible ends
is an algebraic limit of geometrically finite hyperbolic 3-manifolds.Comment: 19 Pages, 2 figures; to appear, proceedings of the Warwick

Sex and Difference in the Jewish American Family: Incest Narratives in 1990s Literary and Pop Culture
My dissertation investigates protective representations of white male Jewish masculinity in the 1990s, via the lens of celebrity incest narratives. In chapters on Woody Allen, Roseanne Barr, and Henry Roth, I demonstrate how media coverage of their respective incest denials (Allen), allegations (Barr), and confessions (Roth) intersect with a history of sexual anti-Semitism. Though prevalent in nineteenth century Europe, sexual anti-Semitism, which simultaneously emasculated Jewish men and rendered them as sexual threats, no longer permeates discourse in the same fashion as the sexualizing component of antiblack racism. I examine how these iconic Jewish artists, news media, and artistic contemporaries, negotiated the hidden, but never absent specter of Jewish male incestuous pedophile in telling these stories. The project intervenes in gender and sexuality studies and ethnic studies by arguing that the particular histories of white ethnic groups, in this case Ashkenazi Jews, informs the manner in which contemporary white privilege operates discursively. The project reveals the community protective patriarchal politics that define “Jewish” interests in a narrow, gendered fashion that dismisses female Jewish (and non-Jewish) accounts of abuse, instead obeying an imperative to deny anti-Semitic stereotypes, even when individual instances demand confirmation. Furthermore, the project proposes that this Jewish community protective politics falls within a broader category of white male class interests, and serves a demonstrable purpose: helping construct a white masculinity that subtly incorporates and champions Jewish male historical vulnerability in order to reconstitute white male American identity as similarly vulnerable and sympathetic in the face of allegations of sexual transgression
Bloch oscillations of Path-Entangled Photons
We show that when photons in N-particle path entangled |N,0> + |0,N> state
undergo Bloch oscillations, they exhibit a periodic transition between
spatially bunched and antibunched states. The transition occurs even when the
photons are well separated in space. We study the scaling of the
bunching-antibunching period, and show it is proportional to 1/N.Comment: An error in figure 1b of the original manuscript was corrected, and
the period was redefine
Patterns of sensory nerve conduction abnormalities in demyelinating and axonal peripheral nerve disorders
The pattern of an abnormal median-normal sural (AMNS) sensory response is associated with acute and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP and CIDP) and considered unusual in other types of neuropathy, although specificity and sensitivity of this pattern have not been evaluated. We compared sensory responses (patterns and absolute values) in patients with AIDP, CIDP, diabetic polyneuropathy (DP), and motor neuron disease (MND). Using strict criteria, the AMNS pattern occurred more frequently in recent onset AIDP (39%) compared with CIDP (28%), DP (14%–23%), or MND (22%) patients. This pattern was found in 3% of control subjects. The extreme pattern of an absent median-present sural response occurred only in AIDP and CIDP patients and in no other groups. Abnormalities of both nerves were more common in long-standing polyneuropathies such as CIDP and DP compared with AIDP or MND. Median nerve amplitudes were reduced significantly in AIDP, CIDP, and DP patients compared with MND patients, whereas sural nerve amplitudes were significantly reduced only in DP and CIDP patients. These findings may reflect early distal nerve involvement particularly in AIDP patients which is highlighted by differences in median and sural nerve recording electrode placement. We conclude that, in the appropriate clinical setting, the AMNS pattern, an absent median-present sural response pattern, or a reduced median amplitude compared with the sural amplitude supports a diagnosis of a primary demyelinating polyneuropathy. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/50157/1/880160304_ftp.pd
