On narrowing coated conductor film: emergence of granularity-induced field hysteresis of transport critical current
Critical current density Jc in polycrystalline or granular superconducting
material is known to be hysteretic with applied field H due to the focusing of
field within the boundary between adjacent grains. This is of concern in the
so-called coated conductors wherein superconducting film is grown on a
granular, but textured surface of a metal substrate. While previous work has
mainly been on Jc determined using induced or magnetization currents, the
present work utilizes transport current via an applied potential in strip
geometry. It is observed that the effect is not as pronounced using transport
current, probably due to a large difference in criterion voltage between the
two types of measurements. However, when the films are narrowed by patterning
into 200-, 100-, or 80-micron, the hysteresis is clearly seen, because of the
forcing of percolation across higher-angle grain boundaries. This effect is
compared for films grown on ion-beam-assisted-deposited (IBAD) YSZ substrate
and those grown on rolling-assisted-biaxially-textures substrates (RABiTS)
which have grains that are about ten times larger. The hysteresis is more
pronounced for the latter, which is more likely to have a weak grain boundary
spanning the width of the microbridge. This is also of concern to applications
in which coated conductors will be striated in order to reduce of AC losses.Comment: text-only: 10 pages, plus 5 figures on 5 page
Magnetic-field dependence of the critical currents in a periodic coplanar array of narrow superconducting strip
We calculate the magnetic-field dependence of the critical current due to
both geometrical edge barriers and bulk pinning in a periodic coplanar array of
narrow superconducting strips. We find that in zero or low applied magnetic
fields the critical current can be considerably enhanced by the edge barriers,
but in modest applied magnetic fields the critical current reduces to that due
to bulk pinning alone.Comment: 23 pages, 7 figure
Geometrical edge barriers and magnetization in superconducting strips with slits
We theoretically investigate the magnetic-field and current distributions for
coplanar superconducting strips with slits in an applied magnetic field H_a. We
consider ideal strips with no bulk pinning and calculate the hysteretic
behavior of the magnetic moment m_y as a function of H_a due solely to
geometrical edge barriers. We find that the m_y-H_a curves are strongly
affected by the slits. In an ascending field, the m_y-H_a curves exhibit kink
or peak structures, because the slits prevent penetration of magnetic flux. In
a descending field, m_y becomes positive, because magnetic flux is trapped in
the slits, in contrast to the behavior of a single strip without slits, for
which m_y =0.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, revtex
Hysteretic characteristics of a double stripline in the critical state
Analytical investigations of the critical state are carried out for a
superconducting stripline consisting of two individual coplanar strips with an
arbitrary distance between them. Two different cases are considered: a
stripline with transport current and strips exposed to a perpendicular magnetic
field. In the second case, the obtained solutions correspond to "fieldlike"
(for unclosed strips) and "currentlike" (for a long rectangular superconducting
loop) states in an isolated strip to which both a transport current and a
magnetic field are applied with constant ratio.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures. accepted by SS
