Dissipative dynamics of a two - level system resonantly coupled to a harmonic mode

We propose an approximation scheme to describe the dynamics of the spin-boson model when the spectral density of the environment shows a peak at a characteristic frequency Ω\Omega which can be very close (or even equal) to the spin Zeeman frequency Δ\Delta. Mapping the problem onto a two-state system (TSS) coupled to a harmonic oscillator (HO) with frequency ω0\omega_0 we show that the representation of displaced HO states provides an appropriate basis to truncate the Hilbert space of the TSS-HO system and therefore a better picture of the system dynamics. We derive an effective Hamiltonian for the TSS-HO system, and show it furnishes a very good approximation for the system dynamics even when its two subsystems are moderately coupled. Finally, assuming the regime of weak HO-bath coupling and low temperatures, we are able to analytically evaluate the dissipative TSS dynamics.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures; V2: Published versio

Black branes in asymptotically Lifshitz spacetime and viscosity/entropy ratios in Horndeski gravity

We investigate black brane solutions in asymptotically Lifshitz spacetime in 3+1-dimensional Horndeski gravity, which admit a critical exponent fixed at z=1/2z=1/2. The cosmological constant depends on zz as Λ=−(1+2z)/L2\Lambda=-(1+2z)/L^{2}. We compute the shear viscosity in the 2+1-dimensional dual boundary field theory via holographic correspondence. We investigate the violation of the bound for viscosity to entropy density ratio of η/s≥1/(4π)\eta/s\geq1/(4\pi) at z=1/2z=1/2.Comment: 7 pages, no figures, 1 table. Version published in EP

    Braneworlds in Horndeski gravity

In this paper we address the issue of finding braneworld solutions in a five-dimensional Horndeski gravity and the mechanism of gravity localization into the brane via `almost massless modes' for suitable values of the Horndeski parameters. We compute the corrections to the Newtonian potential and discuss the limit where four-dimensional gravity is recovered.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figure

Induced higher-derivative massive gravity on a 2-brane in 4D Minkowski space

In this paper we revisit the problem of localizing gravity in a 2-brane embedded in a 4D Minkowski space to address induction of high derivative massive gravity. We explore the structure of propagators to find well-behaved higher-derivative massive gravity induced on the brane. Exploring a special case in the generalized mass term of the graviton propagator we find a model of consistent higher order gravity with an additional unitary massive spin-2 particle and two massless particles: one spin-0 particle and one spin-1 particle. The condition for the absence of tachyons is satisfied for both `right' and `wrong' signs of the Einstein-Hilbert term on the 2-brane. We also find the Pauli-Fierz mass term added to the new massive gravity in three dimensions and recover the low dimensional DGP model.Comment: Latex, 12 pages, no figure; refs added, version to appear in PL
