    EFFICACY OF FUNCTIONAL KNEE BRACES IN SPORT: A REVIEW

    The purpose of this work was to review previously published studies on functional knee braces in an attempt to understand their functionality. A better comprehension of the effects of functional knee bracing could assist ACL-deficient athletes in deciding whether or not these devices could be beneficial in supporting their unstable knee joint during sports. Results showed that functional knee braces alter knee joint kinematics, kinetics and muscle activity. Their mechanism of action, however, might be attributed to the modification of proprioception and motor patterns of the lower limb rather than their mechanical stabilizing effect

    Force plates and pressure measurement systems are commonly used for clinical and experimental applications. The MatScan (Tekscan Inc.), a lightweight, portable and cost-efficient pressure mapping system, can serve as an alternative to a force plate for measuring vertical forces. There has been much debate, however, as to the accuracy and precision of pressure mapping systems when compared to force plates, which have been considered the gold standard in force measurement (Hsiao, Guan & Weatherly, 2002). Although much research has been conducted using different force and pressure measurement systems, there is virtually no literature that discusses the comparisons of measured forces between these types of systems.     Cam femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) is an idiopathic progressive pathological condition of the hip joint characterized by an abnormal bony protuberance on the femoral head-neck junction (Beck, Leunig, Parvizi, Boutier, Wyss & Ganz, 2004). During the limits of hip range of motion (ROM), the protuberance jams into the acetabulum (Ganz, Parvizi, Beck, Leunig, Nötzli & Siebenrock, 2003), resulting in acute hip and groin pain (Beaulé, LeDuff, & Zaragoza, 2007). Impingement has also been shown to occur within normal ROM of the hip during basic tasks such as walking, reducing peak hip abduction angles as well as hip frontal and sagittal ROM (Kennedy, Lamontagne & Beaulé, 2009). Cam FAI primarily affects young and athletic males (Ganz, Parvizi, Beck, Leunig, Nötzli & Siebenrock, 2003), and is common in hockey, football, soccer, rugby, martial arts and tennis athletes (Philippon, Schenker, Briggs & Kuppersmith, 2007). Restricted hip mobility during activities requiring low ROM suggests more pronounced limitations during demanding athletic tasks. Surgical procedures have been developed to remove the bony abnormality from the femoral head-neck junction with the objective of attenuating hip pain and restoring normal hip biomechanics, enabling athletes to return to sport.     El objetivo del presente trabajo es fundamentar los beneficios de la contribución del asesoramiento profesional en la generación y transferencia del conocimiento, para la toma de decisiones en las políticas públicas que permita apropiarse de los avances y aplicaciones resultantes del trabajo científico desarrollado.Las Radiaciones No Ionizantes (RNI) son aquellas que no poseen la energía suficiente para ionizar la materia, pero que producen otro tipo de efectos, especialmente de tipo térmico. Sus efectos a largo plazo sobre la salud de los seres humanos aún es materia de discusión y es por esto que se genera en la ciudadanía una honda preocupación por el desconocimiento y falta de normativas a nivel municipal. El Grupo ITMA reúne un grupo interdisciplinario de profesionales con el objetivo de investigar el impacto de las RNI sobre el medio ambiente y los sistemas biológicos. Una de sus actividades es el asesoramiento a municipios y organismos públicos respecto de las RNI, en particular, el despliegue de antenas de telefonía móvil para generar ordenanzas municipales que contribuyan a la tranquilidad y mejora de la calidad de vida de la comunidad y contemplen los controles necesarios para preservar estas condiciones en el tiempo

    Vaccinating Girls and Boys with Different Human Papillomavirus Vaccines: Can It Optimise Population-Level Effectiveness?

    <label>BACKGROUND</label>Decision-makers may consider vaccinating girls and boys with different HPV vaccines to benefit from their respective strengths; the quadrivalent (HPV4) prevents anogenital warts (AGW) whilst the bivalent (HPV2) may confer greater cross-protection. We compared, to a girls-only vaccination program with HPV4, the impact of vaccinating: 1) both genders with HPV4, and 2) boys with HPV4 and girls with HPV2.<label>METHODS</label>We used an individual-based transmission-dynamic model of heterosexual HPV infection and diseases. Our base-case scenario assumed lifelong efficacy of 100% against vaccine types, and 46,29,8,18,6% and 77,43,79,8,0% efficacy against HPV-31,-33,-45,-52,-58 for HPV4 and HPV2, respectively.<label>RESULTS</label>Assuming 70% vaccination coverage and lifelong cross-protection, vaccinating boys has little additional benefit on AGW prevention, irrespective of the vaccine used for girls. Furthermore, using HPV4 for boys and HPV2 for girls produces greater incremental reductions in SCC incidence than using HPV4 for both genders (12 vs 7 percentage points). At 50% vaccination coverage, vaccinating boys produces incremental reductions in AGW of 17 percentage points if both genders are vaccinated with HPV4, but increases female incidence by 16 percentage points if girls are switched to HPV2 (heterosexual male incidence is incrementally reduced by 24 percentage points in both scenarios). Higher incremental reductions in SCC incidence are predicted when vaccinating boys with HPV4 and girls with HPV2 versus vaccinating both genders with HPV4 (16 vs 12 percentage points). Results are sensitive to vaccination coverage and the relative duration of protection of the vaccines.<label>CONCLUSION</label>Vaccinating girls with HPV2 and boys with HPV4 can optimize SCC prevention if HPV2 has higher/longer cross-protection, but can increase AGW incidence if vaccination coverage is low among boys

    Association of Machine Learning–Based Predictions of Medial Knee Contact Force With Cartilage Loss Over 2.5 Years in Knee Osteoarthritis

    Objective: The relationship between in vivo knee load predictions and longitudinal cartilage changes has not been investigated. We undertook this study to develop an equation to predict the medial tibiofemoral contact force (MCF) peak during walking in persons with instrumented knee implants, and to apply this equation to determine the relationship between the predicted MCF peak and cartilage loss in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA). Methods: In adults with knee OA (39 women, 8 men; mean ± SD age 61.1 ± 6.8 years), baseline biomechanical gait analyses were performed, and annualized change in medial tibial cartilage volume (mm3 /year) over 2.5 years was determined using magnetic resonance imaging. In a separate sample of patients with force-measuring tibial prostheses (3 women, 6 men; mean ± SD age 70.3 ± 5.2 years), gait data plus in vivo knee loads were used to develop an equation to predict the MCF peak using machine learning. This equation was then applied to the knee OA group, and the relationship between the predicted MCF peak and annualized cartilage volume change was determined. Results: The MCF peak was best predicted using gait speed, the knee adduction moment peak, and the vertical knee reaction force peak (root mean square error 132.88N; R2 = 0.81, P < 0.001). In participants with knee OA, the predicted MCF peak was related to cartilage volume change (R2 = 0.35, β = -0.119, P < 0.001). Conclusion: Machine learning was used to develop a novel equation for predicting the MCF peak from external biomechanical parameters.     The metabolism of cancer cells differs from that of their normal counterparts in a spectrum of attributes, including imbalances in diverse metabolic arms and pathways, metabolic plasticity and extent of adaptive responses, levels, and activities of metabolic enzymes and their upstream regulators and abnormal fluxes of metabolic intermediates and products. These attributes endow cancer cells with the ability to survive stressors of the tumor microenvironment and enable them to landscape and exploit the host terrain, thereby facilitating cancer progression and therapy resistance. Understanding the molecular and physiological principles of cancer metabolism is one of the key prerequisites for the development of better anticancer treatments. Therefore, various aspects of cancer metabolism were addressed at the 5th annual meeting of the International Society of Cancer Metabolism (ISCaM) in Bratislava, Slovakia, on October 17\u201320, 2018. The meeting presentations and discussions were traditionally focused on mechanistic, translational, and clinical characteristics of metabolism and pH control in cancer, at the level of molecular pathways, cells, tissues, and organisms. In order to reflect major healthcare challenges of the current era, ISCaM has extended its scope to metabolic disorders contributing to cancer, as well as to opportunities for their prevention, intervention, and therapeutic targeting

    Comparison Between Wolfe, Boyd, BI-RADS and Tabár Based Mammographic Risk Assessment

    Abstract. Mammographic risk assessment provides an indication of the likelihood of women developing breast cancer. Anumber ofmammographic image based classification methods have been developed, such as Wolfe, Boyd, BI-RADS and Tabár based assessment. We provide a comparative study of these four approaches. Results on the full MIAS database are presented, which indicate strong correlation (Spearman’s&gt; 0.9) between Wolfe, Boyd andBI-RADSbased classification, whilst the correlation with Tabár based classification is less straight forward (Spearman’s &lt; 0.5, but low correlations mainly caused by one of the classes).
