Cosmological Constraints on Lorentz Violation in Electrodynamics
Infrared, optical, and ultraviolet spectropolarimetry of cosmological sources
is used to constrain the pure electromagnetic sector of a general
Lorentz-violating standard-model extension. The coefficients for Lorentz

Is it Round? Spectropolarimetry of the Type II-P Supernova 1999em
We present the first multi-epoch spectropolarimetry of a type II plateau
supernova (SN II-P), with optical observations of SN 1999em on days 7, 40, 49,
159, and 163 after discovery. These data are used to probe the geometry of the
electron-scattering atmosphere before, during, and after the plateau phase,
which ended roughly 90 days after discovery. Weak continuum polarization with
an unchanging polarization angle (theta ~ 160 deg) is detected at all epochs,
with p ~ 0.2% on day 7, p ~ 0.3% on days 40 and 49, and p ~ 0.5% in the final
observations. Distinct polarization modulations across strong line features are
present on days 40, 49, 159, and 163. Uncorrected for interstellar polarization
(which is believed to be quite small), polarization peaks are associated with
strong P Cygni absorption troughs and nearly complete depolarization is seen
across the H-alpha emission profile. The temporal evolution of the continuum
polarization and sharp changes across lines indicate polarization intrinsic to
SN 1999em. When modeled in terms of the oblate, electron-scattering atmospheres
of Hoeflich, the observed polarization implies anasphericity of at least 7%
during the period studied. The temporal polarization increase may indicate
greater asphericity deeper into the ejecta. We discuss the implications of
asphericity on the use of type II-P supernovae as primary extragalactic
distance indicators through the expanding photosphere method (EPM). If
asphericity produces directionally dependant flux and peculiar galaxy motions
are characterized by sigma_v_rec = 300 km/s, it is shown that the agreement
between previous EPM measurements of SNe II and distances to the host galaxies
predicted by a linear Hubble law restrict mean SN II asphericity to values less

Chemotherapy-Response Monitoring of Breast Cancer Patients Using Quantitative Ultrasound-Based Intra-Tumour Heterogeneities
© 2017 The Author(s). Anti-cancer therapies including chemotherapy aim to induce tumour cell death. Cell death introduces alterations in cell morphology and tissue micro-structures that cause measurable changes in tissue echogenicity. This study investigated the effectiveness of quantitative ultrasound (QUS) parametric imaging to characterize intra-tumour heterogeneity and monitor the pathological response of breast cancer to chemotherapy in a large cohort of patients (n = 100). Results demonstrated that QUS imaging can non-invasively monitor pathological response and outcome of breast cancer patients to chemotherapy early following treatment initiation. Specifically, QUS biomarkers quantifying spatial heterogeneities in size, concentration and spacing of acoustic scatterers could predict treatment responses of patients with cross-validated accuracies of 82 ± 0.7%, 86 ± 0.7% and 85 ± 0.9% and areas under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve of 0.75 ± 0.1, 0.80 ± 0.1 and 0.89 ± 0.1 at 1, 4 and 8 weeks after the start of treatment, respectively. The patients classified as responders and non-responders using QUS biomarkers demonstrated significantly different survivals, in good agreement with clinical and pathological endpoints. The results form a basis for using early predictive information on survival-linked patient response to facilitate adapting standard anti-cancer treatments on an individual patient basis
Multiband optical polarimetry of BL Lac objects with the Nordic Optical Telescope
Optical polarization of seven selected BL Lac objects in UBVRI bands was
studied with the Nordic Optical Telescope from December 10-14, 1999. Two of
them, 3C 66A and PKS 0735+178, were monitored for 4 nights for a total
integration time of 4.75 and 5.5 hours, respectively. Other objects (1Jy
0138-097, H 0414+009, PKS 0823-223, OJ287 and BL Lac) were observed sparsely
during the run. Apart from PKS 0823-223 (more polarized than observed in the
past), the sources show levels of flux and polarization consistent with results
at previous epochs. 3C 66A and PKS 0735+178 were intensively observed during
December 11 and 12 and exhibited variability of polarization, both on
internight and intranight time scales. Wavelength dependence of polarization
has been investigated, as well as circular polarization. The results are

Composition of dissolved organic matter within a lacustrine environment
Freshwater dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a complex mixture of chemical components that are central to many environmental processes, including carbon and nitrogen cycling. However, questions remain as to its chemical characteristics, sources and transformation mechanisms. Here, we employ 1- and 2-D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to investigate the structural components of lacustrine DOM from Ireland, and how it varies within a lake system, as well as to assess potential sources. Major components found, such as carboxyl-rich alicyclic molecules (CRAM) are consistent with those recently identified in marine and freshwater DOM. Lignin-type markers and protein/peptides were identified and vary spatially. Phenylalanine was detected in lake areas influenced by agriculture, whereas it is not detectable where zebra mussels are prominent. The presence of peptidoglycan, lipoproteins, large polymeric carbo- hydrates and proteinaceous material supports the substantial contribution of material derived from microorganisms. Evidence is provided that peptidoglycan and silicate species may in part originate from soil microbes
Widening access to cardiovascular healthcare: community screening among ethnic minorities in inner-city Britain – the Healthy Hearts Project
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in Britain is concentrated in inner-city areas such as Sandwell, which is home to a diverse multi-ethnic population. Current guidance for CVD risk screening is not established, nor are there specific details for ethnic minorities. Given the disparity in equitable healthcare for these groups, we developed a 'tailored' and systematic approach to CVD risk screening within communities of the Sandwell locality. The key anticipated outcomes were the numbers of participants from various ethnic backgrounds attending the health screening events and the prevalence of known and undiagnosed CVD risk within ethnic groups.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Data was collected during 10 health screening events (September 2005 and July 2006), which included an assessment of raised blood pressure, overweight, hyperlipidaemia, impaired fasting glucose, smoking habit and the 10 year CVD risk score. Specific features of our approach included (i) community involvement, (ii) a clinician who could deliver immediate attention to adverse findings, and (iii) the use of an interpreter.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A total of 824 people from the Sandwell were included in this study (47% men, mean age 47.7 years) from community groups such as the Gujarati Indian, Punjabi Indian, European Caucasian, Yemeni, Pakistani and Bangladeshi. A total of 470 (57%) individuals were referred to their General Practitioner with a report of an increased CVD score – undetected high blood pressure in 120 (15%), undetected abnormal blood glucose in 70 (8%), undetected raised total cholesterol in 149 (18%), and CVD risk management review in 131 (16%).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Using this systematic and targeted approach, there was a clear demand for this service from people of various ethnic backgrounds, of whom, one in two needed review from primary or secondary healthcare. Further work is required to assess the accuracy and clinical benefits of this community health screening approach.</p
The XMM-Newton serendipitous ultraviolet source survey catalogue
The XMM-Newton Serendipitous Ultraviolet Source Survey (XMM-SUSS) is a
catalogue of ultraviolet (UV) sources detected serendipitously by the Optical
Monitor (XMM-OM) on-board the XMM-Newton observatory. The catalogue contains
ultraviolet-detected sources collected from 2,417 XMM-OM observations in 1-6
broad band UV and optical filters, made between 24 February 2000 and 29 March
2007. The primary contents of the catalogue are source positions, magnitudes
and fluxes in 1 to 6 passbands, and these are accompanied by profile
diagnostics and variability statistics. The XMM-SUSS is populated by 753,578 UV
source detections above a 3 sigma signal-to-noise threshold limit which relate
to 624,049 unique objects. Taking account of substantial overlaps between
observations, the net sky area covered is 29-54 square degrees, depending on UV
filter. The magnitude distributions peak at 20.2, 20.9 and 21.2 in UVW2, UVM2
and UVW1 respectively. More than 10 per cent of sources have been visited more
than once using the same filter during XMM-Newton operation, and > 20 per cent
of sources are observed more than once per filter during an individual visit.
Consequently, the scope for science based on temporal source variability on
timescales of hours to years is broad. By comparison with other astrophysical
catalogues we test the accuracy of the source measurements and define the
nature of the serendipitous UV XMM-OM source sample. The distributions of
source colours in the UV and optical filters are shown together with the
expected loci of stars and galaxies, and indicate that sources which are
detected in multiple UV bands are predominantly star-forming galaxies and stars
of type G or earlier.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA
Interstellar Polarization and the Position Angle Orientations of Seyfert 1 Galaxies
We comment on recent spectropolarimetric studies that compare the observed
polarization position angles (PAs) of Seyfert 1 galaxies near H alpha with the
observed orientations of their radio source axes on the sky. For a Seyfert
galaxy in which scattering occurs mainly in an equatorial scattering region,
one expects the polarization PA to be parallel to the radio axis, while in a
case in which light scatters predominantly in the polar regions, the H alpha
polarization PA should be perpendicular to the radio axis. In practice, these
correlations are difficult to establish because a Galactic interstellar
polarization contribution can introduce a significant uncertainty into the
polarization PA determination, even when the magnitude of interstellar
polarization is small. We show how such uncertainties may affect the analysis
of PA alignments and present spectropolarimetric observations of a probe star
along the line of sight to the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 871 that allow us to assess
the intrinsic H alpha polarization and PA of Mrk 871. These results suggest
that spectropolarimetric observations of such probe stars should form an
integral part of future Seyfert galaxy polarization studies.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures, accepted by MNRAS; made small corrections to the

Promoting help-seeking in response to symptoms amongst primary care patients at high risk of lung cancer: a mixed method study
Background: Lung cancer symptoms are vague and difficult to detect. Interventions are needed to promote early diagnosis, however health services are already pressurised. This study explored symptomology and help-seeking behaviours of primary care patients at ‘high-risk’ of lung cancer (≥50 years old, recent smoking history), to inform targeted interventions.
Methods: Mixed method study with patients at eight general practitioner (GP) practices across south England. Study incorporated: postal symptom questionnaire; clinical records review of participant consultation behaviour 12 months pre- and post-questionnaire; qualitative participant interviews (n = 38) with a purposive sample.
Results: A small, clinically relevant group (n = 61/908, 6.7%) of primary care patients was identified who, despite reporting potential symptoms of lung cancer in questionnaires, had not consulted a GP ≥12 months. Of nine symptoms associated with lung cancer, 53.4% (629/1172) of total respondents reported ≥1, and 35% (411/1172) reported ≥2. Most participants (77.3%, n = 686/908) had comorbid conditions; 47.8%, (n = 414/908) associated with chest and respiratory symptoms. Participant consulting behaviour significantly increased in the 3-month period following questionnaire completion compared with the previous 3-month period (p = .002), indicating questionnaires impacted upon consulting behaviour. Symptomatic non-consulters were predominantly younger, employed, with higher multiple deprivation scores than their GP practice mean. Of symptomatic non-consulters, 30% (18/61) consulted ≤1 month post-questionnaire, with comorbidities subsequently diagnosed for five participants. Interviews (n = 39) indicated three overarching differences between the views of consulting and non-consulting participants: concern over wasting their own as well as GP time; high tolerance threshold for symptoms; a greater tendency to self-manage symptoms.
Conclusions: This first study to examine symptoms and consulting behaviour amongst a primary care population at ‘high- risk’ of lung cancer, found symptomatic patients who rarely consult GPs, might respond to a targeted symptom elicitation intervention. Such GP-based interventions may promote early diagnosis of lung cancer or other comorbidities, without burdening already pressurised services
A promyelocytic leukemia protein-thrombospondin 2 axis and the risk of relapse in neuroblastoma
Purpose. Neuroblastoma is a childhood malignancy originating from the sympathetic nervous system with a complex biology, prone to metastasize and relapse. High-risk, metastatic cases are explained in part by amplification or mutation of oncogenes such as MYCN and ALK and loss of tumour suppressor genes in chromosome band 1p. However, it is fundamental to identify other pathways responsible for the large portion of neuroblastomas with no obvious molecular alterations. Experimental design. Neuroblastoma cell lines were used for assessment of tumour growth in vivo and in vitro. Protein expression in tissues and cells was assessed using immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry. The association of PML expression with neuroblastoma outcome and relapse was calculated using log-rank and Mann-Whitney tests, respectively. Gene expression was assessed using chip microarrays. Results: PML is detected in the developing and adult sympathetic nervous system, whereas it is not expressed or low in metastatic neuroblastoma tumours. Reduced PML expression in patients with low-risk cancers - i.e. localized and negative for the MYCN protooncogene - is strongly associated with tumour recurrence. PML-I, but not PML-IV, isoform suppresses angiogenesis via upregulation of thrombospondin-2 (TSP-2), a key inhibitor of angiogenesis. Finally, PML-I and TSP-2 expression inversely correlates with tumour angiogenesis and recurrence in localized neuroblastomas. Dvorkina et al.
