Phase diagram for Ca_{1-x}Y_xMnO_3 type crystals
We present a simple model to study the electron doped manganese perovskites.
The model considers the competition between double exchange mechanism for
itinerant electrons and antiferromagnetic superexchange interaction for
localized electrons. It represents each Mn^{4+} ion by a spin 1/2, on which an
electron can be added to produce Mn^{3+}; we include a hopping energy t, a
strong intratomic interaction exchange J (in the limit J/t>>1), and an
interatomic antiferromagnetic interaction K between the local spins. Using the
Renormalized Perturbation Expansion and a Mean Field Approximation on the
hopping terms and on the superexchange interaction we calculate the free
energy. From it, the stability of the antiferromagnetic, canted, ferromagnetic,
and novel spin glass phases can be determined as functions of the parameters
characterizing the system. The model results can be expressed in terms of t and
K for each value of the doping x in phase diagrams. The magnetization m and
canting angle can also be calculated as fuctions of temperature for fixed
values of doping and model parameters.Comment: 4 figure
Enhancement of the magnetic anisotropy of nanometer-sized Co clusters: influence of the surface and of the inter-particle interactions
We study the magnetic properties of spherical Co clusters with diameters
between 0.8 nm and 5.4 nm (25 to 7500$ atoms) prepared by sequential sputtering
of Co and Al2O3. The particle size distribution has been determined from the
equilibrium susceptibility and magnetization data and it is compared to
previous structural characterizations. The distribution of activation energies
was independently obtained from a scaling plot of the ac susceptibility.
Combining these two distributions we have accurately determined the effective
anisotropy constant Keff. We find that Keff is enhanced with respect to the
bulk value and that it is dominated by a strong anisotropy induced at the
surface of the clusters. Interactions between the magnetic moments of adjacent
layers are shown to increase the effective activation energy barrier for the
reversal of the magnetic moments. Finally, this reversal is shown to proceed
classically down to the lowest temperature investigated (1.8 K).Comment: 13 figures submitted to Phys. Rev.
Coexistence of volatile and nonvolatile memristive effects in phase-separated La0.5Ca0.5MnO3-based devices
In this work, we have investigated the coexistence of volatile and nonvolatile memristive effects in epitaxial phase-separated La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 thin films. At low temperatures (50 K), we observed volatile resistive changes arising from self-heating effects in the vicinity of a metal-to-insulator transition. At higher temperatures (140 and 200 K), we measured a combination of volatile and nonvolatile effects arising from the synergy between self-heating effects and ferromagnetic-metallic phase growth induced by an external electrical field. The results reported here add phase separated manganites to the list of materials that can electrically mimic, on the same device, the behavior of both neurons and synapses, a feature that might be useful for the development of neuromorphic computing hardware. We acknowledge support from ANPCyT (Nos. A composite cathode based on scandium-doped chromate for direct high-temperature steam electrolysis in a symmetric solid oxide electrolyzer
Composite cathodes based on La0.75Sr0.25Cr0.5Mn0.5O3-d (LSCM) are promising candidates for direct steam electrolysis while their insufficient electro-catalytic activity still restricts Faradic efficiency and electrode performance. In this work, scandium is doped into LSCM (LSCMS) to enhance the performance of the composite cathode. The combined characterization of XRD, TEM, TGA and XPS indicates successful partial replacement of Cr/Mn by scandium in the B site of chromate. The doping of scandium remarkably improves ionic conductivity while accordingly decreases the mixed conductivity. Electrochemical measurements demonstrate the decreased electrode polarizations of LSCMS cathodes. The Faradic efficiencies are accordingly enhanced by 20% and 50% compared with the electrolyzer with LSCM cathode for high temperature steam electrolysis by exposing cathode to 5%H2O/5%H2/Ar and 5%H2O/Ar, respectively
