On the Demand for Meat in Brazil

    Get PDF
We used alternative specifications of the Almost Ideal Demand System to estimate the aggregate demand for beef, pork, chicken, and other consumption goods and their elasticities in Brazil. We detected the need for using time trend variables in models’ equations so that an upward trend for each meat demand and a downward trend for other consumption goods were found. The dummy variable for the prices stabilization macroeconomic Real Plan indicated it has not affected demands. According to Marshallian own-price elasticities, demands for meats are inelastic and the demand for other consumption goods is elastic. Cross-price Marshallian and Hicksian elasticities confirm beef, pork and chicken are substitutes one to each other. Expenditure elasticities showed all goods are normal, except for pork which is an inferior good. As personal consumption expenditure increases over time, ceteris paribus, meat consumption will lose importance to other consumption goods, beef consumption will lose importance to chicken, and pork consumption will lose importance to the other types of meat.Meat demand; Almost Ideal Demand System; elasticities; Brazil

Rehabilitation strategies for low anterior resection syndrome. A systematic review

OBJECTIVE: To summarize the evidence in the literature about rehabilitative treatments that reduce low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) symptoms in patients who underwent surgery for colorectal cancer. METHODS: We have search in PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health and Scopus databases. Studies selected were limited to those including only patient undergone low rectal resection with sphincter preservation and with pre-post assessment with a LARS score. Five articles fit the criteria. RESULTS: The percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation demonstrated moderate results and sacral nerve stimulation was found to be the best treatment with greater symptom improvement. Only one study considered sexual and urinary problems in the outcomes assessment. CONCLUSIONS: In clinical practice patients should evaluate with the LARS and other score for evaluation of urinary and sexual problems. Future research must be implemented with higher quality studies to identify the least invasive and most effective treatment/s

Transversity distributions from difference asymmetries in semi-inclusive DIS

In recent years information on the transversity distribution h1 has been obtained by combining the Collins asymmetry results from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) data on transversely polarized nucleon targets with the information on the fragmentation function of a transversely polarized quark from the asymmetries measured in e\ufee 12 annihilation into hadrons. An alternative method was proposed a long time ago, which does not require the e\ufee 12 data but allows one to get ratios of the u and d quark transversity distributions from the SIDIS data alone. The method utilizes the ratio of the difference of the Collins asymmetries of positively and negatively charged hadrons produced on transversely polarized proton and deuteron targets. We have applied this method to the COMPASS proton and deuteron data and extracted the ratio hdv 1 =huv 1 . The results are compared to those obtained in a previous point-by-point extraction based both on SIDIS and e\ufee 12 data

Young Clusters in the Magellanic Clouds II

We present the results of a quantitative study of the degree of extension to the boundary of the classical convective core within intermediate mass stars. The basis of our empirical study is the stellar population of four young populous clusters in the Magellanic Clouds which has been detailed in Keller, Bessell & Da Costa (2000). The sample affords a meaningful comparison with theoretical scenarios with varying degrees of convective core overshoot and binary star fraction. Two critical properties of the population, the main-sequence luminosity function and the number of evolved stars, form the basis of our comparison between the observed data set and that simulated from the stellar evolutionary models. On the basis of this comparison we conclude that the case of no convective core overshoot is excluded at a 2 sigma level.Comment: 27 pages, 12 figures, AJ accepte

Molecular analysis endophytic bacteria from the genus Bacillus isolated from tropical maize (Zea mays L.).

Endophytíc bacteria play an important role in agriculture by improving plant performance and adaptation against biotic and abiotic stresses. In the present study molecular methods were used for identifying Bacillus endophytic bacteria isolated from Brazilian sweet corn. SDS-PAGE of whole-cell protein extract of forty-two isolates revealed a high number of scrutinable bands. Twenty-four isolates were identified in nine different groups of duplicated bacteria and eighteen were identified as unique. Some high-accumulated polipeptides with variable length were observed in almost isolates. Partial sequencing of 16S ribosonal gene revealed that all isolates are Bacillus sp. and among thirteen isolates with similar protein profiles, two were different strains. Among the forty-two isolates identified by rDNA sequencing. Bacillus. subitilis and B. pumilus were the most frequenty species (15 and 12 isolates. respectively) followed by B. licheniforms (7 isolates), B. cereus (5 isolates) and B. uniloliquefascelns (3 isolates). According to present results. SDS-P AGE techínique could be used as a fast and cheap first tool for identifying inter-specific variation in maize endophytic bacterial collections while rDNA sequencing could be applied for analyzing intra-specific variation among isolates with similar protein profile as well as for taxonomic studies
