The new species described below belongs like St. leplocaulis Brem. (in Nova Guinea, new ser., 8: 129. 1957) to the subgenus Telrastichum, which is characterized by the presence in each of the ovary cells of circ. 60 ovules arranged in four rows and by the lower flowers of the inflorescence being subtended by ordinary leaves. The new species is easily distinguishable from St. leptocaulis by its larger and relatively wider leaves and by its obovate-orbicular bracts.

LINDAU in his monograph of the family in the first edition of ENGLER & PRANTL distinguished four subfamilies: Nelsonioideae, Mendoncioideae, Thunbergioideae and Acanthoideae. The first three subfamilies afterwards were united by VAN TIEGHEM and separated from the Acanthaceae under the name Thunbergiaceae. WETTSTEIN agreed with VAN TIEGHEM in so far that he too accepted a nearer affinity between the first three subfamilies, but instead of regarding the whole as a family distinct from the true Acanthaceae he considered them as a subfamily Thunbergioideae, reducing the three subfamilies of LINDAU to tribes. In this way, however, he had, apparently unwittingly, returned to the standpoint taken in by NEES, whose Anechmatacantheae and Echmatacantheae correspond exactly with WETTSTEIN’s Thunbergioideae and Acanthoideae. The difference between the various systems lies therefore in the rank assigned to the groups for which LINDAU used the names Nelsonioideae, Mendoncioideae and Thunbergioideae. They agree with each other in considering these groups as fundamentally distinct from what we might call the typical Acanthaceae or, in LINDAU’s nomenclature, the Acanthoideae

Gynocraterium Bremek. The monotypic genus Gynocraterium Bremek. has been known to be restricted to the Guiana, but recently was cited to other South American countries. Based on a revision of collections from 52 national and foreign herbaria, it is here demonstrated its occurrence in other localities, including the Brazilian Amazon forest. A revision on the genus to the Neotropics is here presented, with ratification of its description, and for Gynocraterium guianense Bremek. aspects of its morphology are for the first time illustrated, as well as description and SEM photographs of the pollen grains. Diagnostic features, phenology and new aspects on the distribution are listed to G. guianense, which is restricted to the Amazon region
