In this note we investigate the influence of structural nonlinearity of a simple cantilever beam impacting system on its dynamic responses close to grazing incidence by a means of numerical simulation. To obtain a clear picture of this effect we considered two systems exhibiting impacting motion, where the primary stiffness is either linear (piecewise linear system) or nonlinear (piecewise nonlinear system). Two systems were studied by constructing bifurcation diagrams, basins of attractions, Lyapunov exponents and parameter plots. In our analysis we focused on the grazing transitions from no impact to impact motion. We observed that the dynamic responses of these two similar systems are qualitatively different around the grazing transitions. For the piecewise linear system, we identified on the parameter space a considerable region with chaotic behaviour, while for the piecewise nonlinear system we found just periodic attractors. We postulate that the structural nonlinearity of the cantilever impacting beam suppresses chaos near grazing. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

The extracellular human melanoma inhibitory activity (MIA) protein adopts an SH3 domain-like fold

Melanoma inhibitory activity (MIA) protein is a clinically valuable marker in patients with malignant melanoma, as enhanced values diagnose metastatic melanoma stages III and IV. Here we show that the recombinant human MIA adopts an SH3 domain-like fold in solution, with two perpendicular, antiparallel, three- and five-stranded β-sheets. In contrast to known structures with the SH3 domain fold, MIA is a single-domain protein, and contains an additional antiparallel β-sheet and two disulfide bonds. MIA is also the first extracellular protein found to have the SH3 domain-like fold. Furthermore, we show that MIA interacts with fibronectin and that the peptide ligands identified for MIA exhibit a matching sequence to type III human fibronectin repeats, especially to FN14, which is close to an integrin α(4)β(1) binding site. The present study, therefore, may explain the role of MIA in metastasis in vivo, and supports a model in which the binding of human MIA to type III repeats of fibronectin competes with integrin binding, thus detaching cells from the extracellular matrix

Recombinant human erythropoietin in sports: a review

Erythropoietin is an endogenous hormone of glicoproteic nature secreted by the kidneys and is the main regulator of the erythropoiesis. An alteration in its production generates a disturbance in the plasmatic concentration giving rise to several types of pathologies related to the hematopoietic system. The recombinant forms of erythropoietin have indiscriminately been used by athletes, mainly in endurance sports, by increasing the erythrocytes concentration, generating a better delivery of oxygen to the muscle tissue. The administration of recombinant erythropoietin was prohibited by the International Olympic Committee and its use considered as doping. This review has the intention to describe the physical, biological and pharmacokinetic properties of the endogenous erythropoietin, as well as its recombinant form, describing also its use in sports and the process of searching methodologies for its detection in doping control
