Prediction of pressure-induced red shift of f->d(t2g) excitations in Cs2NaYCl6:Ce(3+) and its connection with bond length shortening

Quantum chemical calculations including embedding, scalar relativistic, and dynamic electron correlation effects on Cs2NaYCl6:(CeCl6)3- embedded clusters predict: (i) red shifts of the 4f->5d(t2g) transition with pressure and (ii) bond length shortening upon 4f->5d(t2g) excitation. Both effects are found to be connected which suggests that new high pressure spectroscopic experiments could reveal the sign of the bond length change.Comment: 6 pages text; 1 table; 3 figures; to be published in J.Chem.Phy

A counter-example to a recent version of the Penrose conjecture

By considering suitable axially symmetric slices on the Kruskal spacetime, we construct counterexamples to a recent version of the Penrose inequality in terms of so-called generalized apparent horizons.Comment: 12 pages. Lifshitz-Slyozov Scaling For Late-Stage Coarsening With An Order-Parameter-Dependent Mobility

The coarsening dynamics of the Cahn-Hilliard equation with order-parameter dependent mobility, λ(ϕ)(1ϕ2)α\lambda(\phi) \propto (1-\phi^2)^\alpha, is addressed at zero temperature in the Lifshitz-Slyozov limit where the minority phase occupies a vanishingly small volume fraction. Despite the absence of bulk diffusion for α>0\alpha>0, the mean domain size is found to grow as t1/(3+α) \propto t^{1/(3+\alpha)}, due to subdiffusive transport of the order parameter through the majority phase. The domain-size distribution is determined explicitly for the physically relevant case α=1\alpha = 1.Comment: 4 pages, Revtex, no figure

Dynamical properties of the hypercell spin glass model

The spreading of damage technique is used to study the sensibility to initial conditions in a heath bath Monte Carlo simulation of the spin glass hypercubic cell model. Since the hypercubic cell in dimension 2D and the hypercubic lattice in dimension D resemble each other closely at finite dimensions and both converge to mean field when dimension goes to infinity, it allows us to study the effect of dimensionality on the dynamical behavior of spin glasses.Comment: 13 pages, RevTex, 8 ps figure

Evidence for existence of many pure ground states in 3d ±J\pm J Spin Glasses

Ground states of 3d EA Ising spin glasses are calculated for sizes up to 14314^3 using a combination of genetic algorithms and cluster-exact approximation . The distribution P(q)P(|q|) of overlaps is calculated. For increasing size the width of P(q)P(|q|) converges to a nonzero value, indicating that many pure ground states exist for short range Ising spin glasses.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables, 16 reference

Modified Thouless-Anderson-Palmer equations for the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin glass: Numerical solutions

For large but finite systems the static properties of the infinite ranged Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model are numerically investigated in the entire the glass regime. The approach is based on the modified Thouless-Anderson-Palmer equations in combination with a phenomenological relaxational dynamics used as a numerical tool. For all temperatures and all bond configurations stable and meta stable states are found. Following a discussion of the finite size effects, the static properties of the state of lowest free energy are presented in the presence of a homogeneous magnetic field for all temperatures below the spin glass temperature. Moreover some characteristic features of the meta stable states are presented. These states exist in finite temperature intervals and disappear via local saddle node bifurcations. Numerical evidence is found that the excess free energy of the meta stable states remains finite in the thermodynamic limit. This implies a the `multi-valley' structure of the free energy on a sub-extensive scale.Comment: Revtex 10 pages 13 figures included, submitted to Phys.Rev.B. Electron Impact Excitation Cross Sections for Hydrogen-Like Ions

We present cross sections for electron-impact-induced transitions n --> n' in hydrogen-like ions C 5+, Ne 9+, Al 12+, and Ar 17+. The cross sections are computed by Coulomb-Born with exchange and normalization (CBE) method for all transitions with n < n' < 7 and by convergent close-coupling (CCC) method for transitions with n 2s and 1s --> 2p are presented as well. The CCC and CBE cross sections agree to better than 10% with each other and with earlier close-coupling results (available for transition 1 --> 2 only). Analytical expression for n --> n' cross sections and semiempirical formulae are discussed.Comment: RevTeX, 5 pages, 13 PostScript figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.

An Operational evaluation of head up displays for civil transport operations. NASA/FAA phase 3 report

    Get PDF
The advantages and disadvantages of head-up displays (HUDs) in commercial jet transport approach and landing operations was evaluated. Ten airline captains currently qualified in the B-727 aircraft flew a series of instrument landing system (ILS) and nonprecision approaches in a motion base simulator using both a flight director HUD concept and a flightpath HUD concept as well as conventional head-down instruments under a variety of environmental and operational conditions to assess: (1) the potential benefits of these HUDs in airline operations; (2) problems which might be associated with their use; and (3) flight crew training requirements and flight crew operating procedures suitable for use with the HUDs. Results are presented in terms of objective simulator based performance measures, subject pilot opinion and rating data, and observer data

Monte-Carlo simulations of the violation of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem in domain growth processes

Numerical simulations of various domain growth systems are reported, in order to compute the parameter describing the violation of fluctuation dissipation theorem (FDT) in aging phenomena. We compute two-times correlation and response functions and find that, as expected from the exact solution of a certain mean-field model (equivalent to the O(N) model in three dimensions, in the limit of N going to infinity), this parameter is equal to one (no violation of FDT) in the quasi-equilibrium regime (short separation of times), and zero in the aging regime.Comment: 5 pages, 5 eps figure

Nonequilibrium critical dynamics of ferromagnetic spin systems

We use simple models (the Ising model in one and two dimensions, and the spherical model in arbitrary dimension) to put to the test some recent ideas on the slow dynamics of nonequilibrium systems. In this review the focus is on the temporal evolution of two-time quantities and on the violation of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, with special emphasis given to nonequilibrium critical dynamics.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures.Contribution to the Proceedings of the ESF SPHINX meeting `Glassy behaviour of kinetically constrained models' (Barcelona, March 22-25, 2001).
