The 24-Cell and Calabi-Yau Threefolds with Hodge Numbers (1,1)
Calabi-Yau threefolds with h^11(X)=h^21(X)=1 are constructed as free
quotients of a hypersurface in the ambient toric variety defined by the
24-cell. Their fundamental groups are SL(2,3), a semidirect product of Z_3 and
Z_8, and Z_3 x Q_8.Comment: 22 pages, 3 figures, 3 table
The B-L/Electroweak Hierarchy in Smooth Heterotic Compactifications
E8 X E8 heterotic string and M-theory, when appropriately compactified, can
give rise to realistic, N=1 supersymmetric particle physics. In particular, the
exact matter spectrum of the MSSM, including three right-handed neutrino
supermultiplets, one per family, and one pair of Higgs-Higgs conjugate
superfields is obtained by compactifying on Calabi-Yau manifolds admitting
specific SU(4) vector bundles. These "heterotic standard models" have the
SU(3)_{C} X SU(2)_{L} X U(1)_{Y} gauge group of the standard model augmented by
an additional gauged U(1)_{B-L}. Their minimal content requires that the B-L
gauge symmetry be spontaneously broken by a vacuum expectation value of at
least one right-handed sneutrino. In a previous paper, we presented the results
of a renormalization group analysis showing that B-L gauge symmetry is indeed
radiatively broken with a B-L/electroweak hierarchy of O(10) to O(10^{2}). In
this paper, we present the details of that analysis, extending the results to
include higher order terms in tan[beta]^{-1} and the explicit spectrum of all
squarks and sleptons.Comment: 60 pages, 6 figure
Hanle Effect in Transport through Quantum Dots Coupled to Ferromagnetic Leads
We suggest a series of transport experiments on spin precession in quantum
dots coupled to one or two ferromagnetic leads. Dot spin states are created by
spin injection and analyzed via the linear conductance through the dot, while
an applied magnetic field gives rise to the Hanle effect. Such a Hanle
experiment can be used to determine the spin lifetime in the quantum dot, to
measure the spin injection efficiency into the dot, as well as proving the
existence of intrinsic spin precession which is driven by the Coulomb
interaction.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, minor changes, added reference
Singular extremals for the time-optimal control of dissipative spin 1/2 particles
We consider the time-optimal control by magnetic fields of a spin 1/2
particle in a dissipative environment. This system is used as an illustrative
example to show the role of singular extremals in the control of quantum
systems. We analyze a simple case where the control law is explicitly
determined. We experimentally implement the optimal control using techniques of
nuclear magnetic resonance. To our knowledge, this is the first experimental
demonstration of singular extremals in quantum systems with bounded control
amplitudes.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
Fluctuations of the number of participants and binary collisions in AA interactions at fixed centrality in the Glauber approach
In the framework of the classical Glauber approach, the analytical
expressions for the variance of the number of wounded nucleons and binary
collisions in AA interactions at a given centrality are presented. Along with
the optical approximation term, they contain additional contact terms arising
only in the case of nucleus-nucleus collisions. The magnitude of the additional
contributions, e.g., for PbPb collisions at SPS energies, is larger than the
contribution of the optical approximation at some values of the impact
parameter. The sum of the additional contributions is in good agreement with
the results of independent Monte Carlo simulations of this process. Due to
these additional terms, the variance of the total number of participants for
peripheral PbPb collisions and the variance of the number of collisions at all
values of the impact parameter exceed several multiples of the Poisson
variances. The correlator between the numbers of participants in colliding
nuclei at fixed centrality is also analytically calculated.Comment: updated version; as published by Phys. Rev.
On Free Quotients of Complete Intersection Calabi-Yau Manifolds
In order to find novel examples of non-simply connected Calabi-Yau
threefolds, free quotients of complete intersections in products of projective
spaces are classified by means of a computer search. More precisely, all
automorphisms of the product of projective spaces that descend to a free action
on the Calabi-Yau manifold are identified.Comment: 39 pages, 3 tables, LaTe
Simultaneous time-optimal control of the inversion of two spin 1/2 particles
We analyze the simultaneous time-optimal control of two-spin systems. The two
non coupled spins which differ in the value of their chemical offsets are
controlled by the same magnetic fields. Using an appropriate rotating frame, we
restrict the study to the case of opposite shifts. We then show that the
optimal solution of the inversion problem in a rotating frame is composed of a
pulse sequence of maximum intensity and is similar to the optimal solution for
inverting only one spin by using a non-resonant control field in the laboratory
frame. An example is implemented experimentally using techniques of Nuclear
Magnetic Resonance.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure
