Uncoupling between cerebral perfusion and oxygenation during incremental exercise in an athlete with postconcussion syndrome: a case report
High‐intensity exercise may pose a risk to patients with postconcussion syndrome (PCS) when symptomatic during exertion. The case of a paralympic athlete with PCS who experienced a succession of convulsion‐awakening periods and reported a marked increase in postconcussion symptoms after undergoing a graded symptom‐limited aerobic exercise protocol is presented. Potential mechanisms of cerebrovascular function failure are then discussed
The effectiveness of quantum operations for eavesdropping on sealed messages
A quantum protocol is described which enables a user to send sealed messages
and that allows for the detection of active eavesdroppers. We examine a class
of eavesdropping strategies, those that make use of quantum operations, and we
determine the information gain versus disturbance caused by these strategies.
We demonstrate this tradeoff with an example and we compare this protocol to
quantum key distribution, quantum direct communication, and quantum seal

Mental work stimulates cardiovascular responses through a reduction in cardiac parasympathetic modulation in men and women
Mental Work (MW) stimulates Cardiovascular (CV) functions in healthy adults and a reduction in cardiac parasympathetic modulation could be one mechanism involved in such a response. The influence of sex on these CV responses remains ambiguous. The aim of the study was to evaluate CV impacts of MW in healthy individuals and whether sex influences CV responses induced by MW. The impact of a 45-min reading and writing session vs. a control condition, on Blood Pressure (BP), Heart Rate (HR), and Heart Rate Variability (HRV), was evaluated in 44 healthy adults with the use of a randomized crossover design. The influence of sex on those variables was then evaluated. Diastolic BP (74 ± 1 vs. 69 ± 1 mmHg; p < 0.05) and mean arterial pressure (MAP; 87 ± 7 vs. 83 ± 8 mmHg; p < 0.005), HR (68 ± 1 vs. 62 ± 1 bpm; p < 0.0001) and low frequency/high frequency ratio (2.8 ± 0.1 vs. 2.0 ± 0.1; p < 0.0001) were higher, while global HRV (SDNN: 84 ± 3 vs.104 ± 3 ms; p < 0.0001) and cardiac parasympathetic activity were lower during MW (p < 0.0001) vs. the control condition in the whole sample. During both experimental conditions, HR was higher (p < 0.0001), while BP, rMSSD, pNN50 and low frequency component of HRV were lower in women compared to men (all p < 0.05). The intensity of the cognitive demand and its influence on CV variables were comparable between men and women. These results support that MW increases BP and HR through decrement in cardiac parasympathetic modulation in healthy subjects and suggest that sex does not influence CV responses induced by cognitive demand of similar intensity

The Representation of Natural Numbers in Quantum Mechanics
This paper represents one approach to making explicit some of the assumptions
and conditions implied in the widespread representation of numbers by composite
quantum systems. Any nonempty set and associated operations is a set of natural
numbers or a model of arithmetic if the set and operations satisfy the axioms
of number theory or arithmetic. This work is limited to k-ary representations
of length L and to the axioms for arithmetic modulo k^{L}. A model of the
axioms is described based on states in and operators on an abstract L fold
tensor product Hilbert space H^{arith}. Unitary maps of this space onto a
physical parameter based product space H^{phy} are then described. Each of
these maps makes states in H^{phy}, and the induced operators, a model of the
axioms. Consequences of the existence of many of these maps are discussed along
with the dependence of Grover's and Shor's Algorithms on these maps. The
importance of the main physical requirement, that the basic arithmetic
operations are efficiently implementable, is discussed. This conditions states
that there exist physically realizable Hamiltonians that can implement the
basic arithmetic operations and that the space-time and thermodynamic resources

The impact of smoking on adherence to treatment for latent tuberculosis infection
BACKGROUND: Studies have shown an association between smoking and tuberculosis (TB) infection, disease and TB-related mortality. We hypothesized that smokers with latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) are less likely to comply with their LTBI treatment regimen, thus increasing their risk of developing active disease. We thus documented the impact of smoking on adherence to LTBI treatment. METHOD: Between 1998 and 2000, a convenience sample of patients undergoing treatment for LTBI completed a questionnaire on smoking status. Level of adherence to LTBI treatment was tested for associations with socio-demographic profile, and smoking status RESULTS: 320 patients were recruited, and 302 (94%) completed the questionnaire. Smoking prevalence was 21%. 72% of patients were adherent to LTBI treatment. Women (OR = 2.0; 95% CI: 1.2–3.3) and non-smokers (OR = 1.8; 95% CI: 1.0–3.3) were associated with adherence to LTBI treatment. Only gender was found as an independent predictor of adherence after adjusting for age and smoking status (OR = 1.9; 95% CI: 1.06–3.3). CONCLUSION: Males and smokers need to have extra supervision to ensure compliance with LTBI treatment
Quantum Robots and Environments
Quantum robots and their interactions with environments of quantum systems
are described and their study justified. A quantum robot is a mobile quantum
system that includes a quantum computer and needed ancillary systems on board.
Quantum robots carry out tasks whose goals include specified changes in the
state of the environment or carrying out measurements on the environment. Each
task is a sequence of alternating computation and action phases. Computation
phase activities include determination of the action to be carried out in the
next phase and possible recording of information on neighborhood environmental
system states. Action phase activities include motion of the quantum robot and
changes of neighborhood environment system states. Models of quantum robots and
their interactions with environments are described using discrete space and
time. To each task is associated a unitary step operator T that gives the
single time step dynamics. T = T_{a}+T_{c} is a sum of action phase and
computation phase step operators. Conditions that T_{a} and T_{c} should
satisfy are given along with a description of the evolution as a sum over paths
of completed phase input and output states. A simple example of a task carrying
out a measurement on a very simple environment is analyzed. A decision tree for
the task is presented and discussed in terms of sums over phase paths. One sees
that no definite times or durations are associated with the phase steps in the
tree and that the tree describes the successive phase steps in each path in the
